Round 1: Max Suffridge vs. Daniel Tate
Matt Peddle

Welcome to the dueling dome! This first round feature match brings two online entities together. Daniel Tate, known online as "orangeeyes," has found himself facing off against Alpha Omega's Max Suffridge. Max won the tournament here at Columbus two years ago, while Tate is fresh off success from Minneapolis. Daniel Tate won the roll and opted to go first.

Daniel opened with a set monster and two set spell or trap cards. He flipped Trap Dustshoot during Max's standby phase and sent back Sangan quickly, as Max was looking at a Machine Duplication as well. Max set a spell or trap card, summoned Cyber Phoenix, and attacked Tate's face down Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive. Tate fiddled with his spell or trap during the end phase but didn't use anything. On his turn he flipped it, Call of the Haunted targeting Dekoichi, and attacked Cyber Phoenix. Another monster joined Tate's field face down and he passed his turn.

Max was up and summoned Card Trooper and played Machine Duplication to find two more from his deck. He lost nine cards from his deck, hitting no significant monsters but dropping both Heavy Storm and Pot of Avarice, and the Troopers attacked, destroying the face down Treeborn Frog and Dekoichi. Tate drew and brought back Treeborn Frog. He used Soul Exchange on Card Trooper and tributed for Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch. "Unfair advantage!" yelled Max. He picked Spirit Reaper and passed with no backfield.

Max drew for his turn. He lost three cards from the deck for one Trooper, used Ring of Destruction on Thestalos, and attacked. The little Trooper took out Frog, while the big one got in for 1900 damage. Max set a monster and spell or trap to end his turn. On Tate's turn, he brought back Treeborn Frog and tributed for Raiza the Storm Monarch, spinning the back row card and attacking Card Trooper. He set a spell or trap before ending his turn. Max played Mystical Space Typhoon, tributed for Jinzo, and pumped his Trooper. Jinzo bumped heads with Raiza and the Trooper swung for game.

Both players turned to their side decks before game 2 and made some adjustments. After the full three minutes of side deck time, Tate began the second game. He did so by setting a monster and passing. Max played Cyber Dragon, summoned Cyber Phoenix, and played Nobleman of Crossout. "I'm very sorry about that," said Max, as Tate's Gravekeeper's Spys were removed from play. Max attacked for 3300 and Tate was up. He set a monster, a spell or trap, and passed. "I'm going right into that!" said Max, before attacking with Cyber Dragon. He hit nothing but Spirit Reaper though, and play was to Tate.

Tate tributed for Raiza the Storm Monarch, but was hit with Pulling the Rug. Raiza was brought back by Premature Burial and attacked Cyber Dragon. Max was up now, and he contemplated his moves before setting Mystic Tomato and Pulling the Rug. Banisher of the Radiance came down for Tate, and he attacked Cyber Phoenix and Mystic Tomato, removing both from play. Max top decked Snatch Steal though, and took Raiza to beat up Banisher. Spirit Reaper joined him, and pulled Treeborn Frog from hand. Heavy Storm dropped from Tate's hand to destroy Raiza, through Premature Burial’s effect, and Max's Pulling the Rug. Next Cyber Dragon and Card Trooper joined battle with Spirit Reaper to take out a chunk of Max's life points.

Card Trooper dropped next for Max, and he played his last card, Machine Duplication, to find two more Troopers in defense mode. Trooper knocked three off the top and went into Cyber Dragon to draw a card. Max passed with no further plays, and Tate brought back his Treeborn Frog. Tate's Trooper went to defense, and Cyber Dragon attacked a Trooper. Tate set another monster and Max was up. Max set a monster and passed to Tate. Tate flipped another Dekoichi, played Banisher of the Radiance, and attacked Max's Trooper. Cyber Dragon hit the face down Dekoichi on Max's field, but Tate couldn't answer Spirit Reaper. He passed with a backfield and a field full of monsters.

Max was up now, and he played Raiza the Storm Monarch. He sent Cyber Dragon to the top of the deck, and attacked Treeborn Frog. Sakuretsu Armor took down Raiza and Max special summoned Cyber Dragon and set a back row before passing. Tate tributed Banisher of the Radiance for Cyber Dragon, lost three from the top for Trooper, and attacked with Cyber Dragon. Max played Sakuretsu Armor and Tate flung Trooper into Cyber Dragon to draw. He drew Pot of Avarice and played it. His hand bumped to three cards, and he set a spell or trap card before passing. Max drew and looked gloomy at his two in-hand Trap Dustshoots. He passed, Tate said, "That's game," and Max picked up his stuff before waiting for Tate to show him the Raiza.

Max opened the third game with two set spell or trap cards. Trap Dustshoot came down during Tate's standby phase, and Max chose Banisher of the Radiance to send back to his deck. Mystic Tomato came down for Tate and connected for 1400. He played his own Dustshoot on Max's turn and sent back Cyber Phoenix. Max special summoned Cyber Dragon and attacked Mystic Tomato. Tate searched out Spirit Reaper. Max set a second back row card and passed to Tate, who used Brain Control on Cyber Dragon. Spirit Reaper attacked Max, who flipped Scapegoat to protect his hand and life points. Two Sheep Tokens were taken out, and Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch was played, tributing Cyber Dragon in the process. Call of the Haunted was pulled from hand, and Max set a monster before passing his turn.

Tate attacked a Sheep with Spirit Reaper, and then attacked the face down Sangan with Thestalos. Max searched for Card Trooper and Tate set a monster before passing. Card Trooper dropped and knocked three monsters off the deck with priority. That gave Max exactly enough monsters to play his Pot of Avarice. He did so, and attacked Spirit Reaper for 1600. On Tate's turn, he summoned Mystic Tomato and attacked the Trooper with Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch. Tomato hit a Sheep, and Spirit Reaper got in directly, pulling Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive from Max's hand. Heavy Storm flipped to destroy Mirror Force on Max's turn, and Cyber Dragon came down. Card Trooper dropped next and the Raiza the Storm Monarch that had been lost off the top was brought back with Premature Burial. Everyone attacked into Spirit Reaper for game!

Max Suffridge pulls out a fast one on Daniel Tate to move on undefeated!
