Newcomer Fili Luna has won Shonen Jump Championship San Francisco!

The relatively unknown Fili Luna overcame veteran Jonathan Navarro to survive a quarterfinals that most believed he would scrub out of, myself included. He went on to defeat Comic Odyssey’s new member, Matt Laurents, and then beat out Michael Bueno to win the whole shebang. Armed with a control-oriented Warrior Toolbox deck, he dominated the finals with a 2-0 victory that left his opposition, and his naysayers, totally stunned.

Fili Luna is a member of Team Outphase, fronted by team founder Jason Holloway. Holloway is a familiar face, having previously made the Top 8 of Shonen Jump Atlanta, and Luna was quick to attribute his quality of play to Holloway’s influence. “I was making him practice every day for this,” explained Holloway. “We used to go to IHOP and practice until 4 AM.” It paid off, too, as Fili dominated the Top 8.

When asked what he intended to do with his new Des Volstgalph, Luna replied that he’d be “going to every Shonen Jump Championship, now!” Look for him to become a regular of the Shonen Jump tournament series in 2006.

Our congratulations go out to Fili Luna and Team Outphase! Haven’t read all the coverage yet? Check out all the best decks, tech, players, and new teams right here at Metagame.com!

This Week on Metagame.com

This week here on Metagame.com, we’ve got some offbeat offerings that are bound to catch your interest. We start off the week taking a few paces back from the current Advanced environment and look at some more interesting possibilities within the format. Then, we close with some new tech and classic game fundamentals.

Mike Rosenberg opens up shop for us today, when he looks at Ultimate Offering. Never gaining substantial popularity despite being in circulation since the game’s beginning, Ultimate Offering is subject to some rulings that Mike thinks make the card amazing. He looks at the history of the card, some of its trickier rulings, and show you how to use it to create a really cool locking situation. If you’re a Magical Hats fan, this article is a must-read!

Jerome McHale hits us with a deck the next day, taking on a near-impossible challenge? Can a Water deck be viable in the current format? If so, can it possibly survive without A Legendary Ocean? Jerome suggests that the answer is “yes” to both, and shows you how to get the most out of Water’s unique field control effects.

Then, I’ll look at a deck that is an absolute blast to play. On Wednesday, I’ll fix up a submission geared towards literally stealing a win, taking the opponent’s monsters through a multitude of effects and turning them against their previous controllers. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing your own monsters smacking you around, and this deck is great for playing head games with your opponent!

On Thursday, Curtis Schultz continues his look at Rivalry of Warlords. Last week, he introduced the card, but this week, he shows you how to get the most out of it in battle, and even demonstrates how it can hose Mobius the Frost Monarch when it hits the field! If you’re looking for some brand-new and versatile tech you’re in luck, because Curtis has the prescription for what ails ya’.

Finally, Julia Hedberg rounds out the week with a look at what I’d call the most integral concept in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. Card advantage? Nah. Monster management? Nope. Julia looks at synergy versus utility—explaining what each term means, giving examples to express the fundamental game theories, and then explaining why you should care about this concept. If you’re blinking in confusion and don’t recognize these terms, or aren’t familiar with how they relate to the game, this article is beyond must-read status.

That’s it for this week! Be sure to head back each day to catch all the exclusive content here at Metagame.com, and don’t forget to check here in another seven days for all the news, article previews, and insider info you’ll need.

As always, thanks for reading Metagame.com!
