Day 1
8:09 Who’s at the Top Table — Round 9
Ok, this is it, the last round of the day. Last chance to make Top 8 in Canada’s first ever Shonen Jump Championship. Who’ll make it in?
Table 1 – Richard Clegg (8 wins) [SBC competitior] vs. Corey Faibish (8 wins).
Table 2 – Eric Blum (7 wins) vs. Ros Modilevski (7 wins).
Table 3 – Anthony Alvarado (7 wins) [SBC competitor] vs. Kris Perovic (7 wins). [SBC competitor] Aw, they’re teammates, too. That’s sad . . .

Could Kyle Duncan repeat his Philly performance and keep the [Shrink] in Canada? Note that we’ve still got two Scrub Brush Challenge competitors in the running here, too, and they’ve been clinging to the top spots for several rounds now. One round left, and we’ll have our Top 8!
5:45 Who’s at the Top Tables — Round 7

5:20 I am not Selling Cards and I am not a Judge
I’ve spent almost as much time answering rulings debates, telling people to go ask one of the judges, or telling people how much the cards in the box labeled “All Cards $1.00 or 5 for $6.00” cost as I’ve spent sending content to the editor, processing photos or writing blog entries. Even though I’m hidden behind the time clock, somehow people can still see me. I need some kind of deer blind or something.
5:10 You Know You’re In Canada When . . .
You have a package of English Chocolate that is maple-flavored and has French writing on the wrapper. And Jason says he’s back from going “oot” to get it.
4:30 Who’s at the Top Table — Round 6!
Well, the cream is definitely rising . . . there’re more than a few well-known players up here in this round. Check it out:
Table 1 — Robert Ackerman (5 wins) vs. Mike Powers (5 wins) [this round’s Feature Match!]
Table 2 — Corey Faibish (5 wins) vs. Mario Gauthier (5 wins)
Table 3 — Richard Clegg (5 wins) [SBC competitor] vs. Dwight Lloyd (5 wins)
Table 4 — Eric Herdzik (5 wins) vs. Shend Jeyarajah (5 wins)
Table 5 — Eric Blum (5 wins) vs. Chris Pittao (5 wins)
Table 6 — Kyle Duncan (5 wins) vs. Nick Hammond (5 wins)
Table 7 — Dharmish Patel (5 wins) [SBC competitor] vs. Josh Tremere (5 wins)
Table 8 — Anthony Alvarado (4 wins) [SBC competitor] vs. Lawrence Teves (4 wins)
T is just one table off, sitting at table 9. Not a bad comeback — come on, T!
3:30 Mirror Match?
We had too many players to fit into the normal ballroom, so the TO got an additional room. It’s definitely cooler and more comfortable than the main room, and it has a nice window view of downtown Hamilton, but there’s one thing players need to be careful of . . . Partially mirrored ceilings. Keep those cards close to your chest!
2:45 Who’s at the Top Tables — Round 4!
I recognize a few of these names, how about you? Check out how many SBC competitors we’ve got, I don’t think we’ve ever had this many sitting at table 8 on up in the history of the Challenge.
Table 1 — Richard Clegg (3 wins) [SBC competitor] vs. Anthony Mosca (3 wins)
Table 2 — Phillipe Asselin (3 wins) vs. Mike Powers
Table 3 — Tristan Gonzales (3 wins) vs. Alex Vansant (3 wins) [SBC competitor]
Table 4 — Ivan Flores (3 wins) [SBC competitor] vs. John Redbird (3 wins) [SBC Competitor]
Table 5 — Shend Jeyarajah (3 wins) vs. Michael Sherkin (3 wins)
Table 6 — Eric Blum (3 wins) vs. David Bui (3 wins) [SBC competitor]
Table 7 — Sheldon Hamilton (3 wins) vs. Craig McDonald (3 wins)
Table 8 — Matthew Hunt-Foley (3 wins) vs. Brian Long (3 wins)
2:15 Technology Working For Me
You never really appreciate wireless until you go back to wire . . . since I’ve got all the internet, I get to be the window to the outside world. Look at all the USB drives I’m using, to get all the information from today’s event to you, the adoring public.
2:00 Who’s at the Top Tables, Round 3
Ok! Let’s see who’s sitting up high!
Table 1 — James Guerrero (2 wins) vs. Ryan Peddle (2 wins)
Table 2 — Devon Schwartz (2 wins) vs. Michael Sherkin (2 wins)
Table 3 — Dharmish Patel (2 wins) [SBC Competitor] vs. Kyle Warfield (2 wins)
Table 4 — Farhan Kassim (2 wins) vs. John Redbird (2 wins) [SBC Competitor]
Table 5 — Mario Gauthier (2 wins) vs. Bryan Coronel (2 wins)
Table 7 — Martin Armstrong (2 wins) vs. Dwight Lloyd (2 wins)
Table 8 — David Agosta (2 wins) vs. Neftali Gonzalez (2 wins)
How about that? We’ve got two SBC competitors sitting at the top tables. Oh, and Bryan Coronel, I haven’t seen him in forever.
1:30 Touch My Chair and Die.
The person-to-chair ratio is still slanted heavily towards the person side of the equation, so chairs are a precious commodity. If you want to sit down, you need to watch your seat. (As I type this, Brian Long came up to tell me, “There’s a chair missing from table 17!” The chair was located at the feature match area, where a spectator had appropriated it.) Don’t turn your back on your chair — hey! That’s Jason’s chair, bring that back!
11:30 Round 1 Begins!
Ok, we are finally getting started, not all that far behind schedule. Those players who arrived a bit late were pretty happy that we waited for them. Professional Event Services really pushes through the rounds, so we should be just about caught up by the end of the day.
11:20 The Player Meeting Begins!
Well, there still aren’t enough chairs, but we’re getting started. Sean Mangin gave a brief address to the players, and then handed them over to Head Judge Jeff Yuschak. Hopefully they all pay attention, since players who listen to the player meeting tend to make fewer mistakes and the event goes a lot quicker.
Let’s get this Shonen on the road! The Scrub Brush Challenge will be up soon.
9:45 Traffic Accident Blocks Off Shonen Jump!
A traffic accident on Highway 403 blocked off incoming traffic from three compass points, prompting the TO to delay registration for an additional 45 minutes to give people stuck in traffic or finding alternate ways to the event time to get here and register. Hopefully those involved in the accident are all right, but we will be getting off to a slower than usual start today.
8:50 All the Dutchies!
Well, I got shorted at Nationals, but it’s all good. So far I’ve gotten three dutchies! These are a square raisin donut from Tim Horton’s (Tim Horton’s is really good donut and sandwich chain that doesn’t exist where I live). I love these things. I complained about the lack of dutchies at Nationals, and apparently the squeaky wheel gets the glazed raisin-filled goodness. Thank you to everyone who got me a dutchie!
