Quarterfinals: Josh Cohen vs. Hugo Adame
Matt Peddle

This Top 8 feature match pits well-known Comic Odyssey star Hugo Adame vs. a relatively unknown Josh Cohen who's flying solo for this event. He's undefeated thus far in the tournament, and is playing a Big Monarch deck. Adame's playing a nifty Cosmos deck that sides into Machines. He's been on a roll lately, and is hoping to extend his streak with a win here today. This will be an interesting matchup.

Cohen won the roll and opened by setting a spell or trap card and a monster. Adame examined his options at the start of his turn and elected to play Dimensional Fissure. He summoned D.D. Warrior Lady and attacked into Cohen's face down. He hit Treeborn Frog and it was removed from play by the Fissure. He set a spell or trap card and passed. Cohen activated Soul Exchange on his turn and tributed Adame's Warrior Lady for Mobius the Frost Monarch, who blasted the Fissure and was switched to defense by a chained Enemy Controller. He then activated Golden Sarcophagus, selecting Snipe Hunter from his deck before passing his turn.

Adame played another Dimensional Fissure and summoned D.D. Survivor. He destroyed the Mobius in his battle phase, set a spell or trap, and passed. Cohen set a monster on his turn, and passed back to Adame, who set a spell or trap before attacking the face down Spirit Reaper. Adame passed, and Cohen retrieved his Snipe Hunter during his standby phase. He summoned that Snipe Hunter declaring that he would want to use priority. He didn't get that far though, as Adame activated Solemn Judgment to negate it. Cohen set a spell or trap and passed to Adame, who played his own Golden Sarcophagus, targeting Raiza the Storm Monarch from his deck. He passed, and Cohen passed right back. Adame had no plays on his turn, and Cohen set a monster on his turn. Adame was up again, and he grabbed his Raiza from the treasure chest. He played it, tributing his D.D. Survivor, bouncing Spirit Reaper to the top of Cohen's deck, and attacked the face down monster. Raiza was destroyed by Widespread Ruin, and Adame brought back his Survivor during the end phase.

Cohen flipped Gravekeeper's Spy on his turn to find another in defense mode before tributing the attack mode Spy for Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch. Adame activated Solemn Judgment to negate the summon though, and Cohen passed. Adame played another Raiza the Storm Monarch, spinning the Spy to the top of Cohen's deck. Cohen blocked the attack with Scapegoat though, and only lost a Sheep during the battle phase. Adame brought back his Survivor, and Cohen was up. He set a monster face down and passed to Adame, who set a spell or trap card before tributing D.D. Survivor for Cyber Dragon. The Dragon flipped Spirit Reaper face up, and Raiza hit a Sheep. Survivor returned to the field once more.

Cohen set another monster and a spell or trap card on his turn. Adame switched his Cyber Dragon to defense mode and blasted the face down Gravekeeper's Spy, who didn't find any friends this time. The Survivor took out a Sheep, and Adame summoned another Survivor in main phase two. Cohen was up now, and not in the best of spots. He set another spell or trap and passed to Adame. Adame switched his Raiza to defense as well, and hit a Sheep with the Survivor. He then switched his Cyber Dragon back to attack mode and one Survivor to defense mode before passing.

Cohen continued his trend of drawing and setting spell or traps, adding his third one before summoning Mystic Tomato and attacking Raiza the Storm Monarch. Raiza was taken down, and Adame was up once more. Tomato was removed from play after being destroyed by a Survivor, and Adame switched his Cyber Dragon to defense mode and set his fourth spell or trap card before passing. Cohen had no plays on his turn, and Adame used Exiled Force to rid the field of the Reaper. He then swung directly with both Survivors. During his main phase two, he summoned a third Survivor and switched his Dragon back to attack mode.

Cohen set a spell or trap and passed to Adame. Adame's Cyber Dragon switched to defense mode and his attacks were blocked with Mirror Force. All his Survivors came back at the end phase though, and Cohen scooped up his cards.

Both players smoke screened their side decking, and Cohen began the second game with a set to each zone. Adame set a monster and a spell or trap as well before passing. Cohen played Soul Exchange, tributing his opponent's Sangan for Jinzo. Adame searched out Cyber Phoenix, revealing his side deck choices. Cohen passed, and Adame started up his turn with Cyber Dragon. Cyber Phoenix came down as well, and Adame played Smashing Ground to destroy Jinzo. The Phoenix hit the face down monster, which was flipped and revealed to be Spirit Reaper. Adame passed, and Cohen played Premature Burial targeting Jinzo. Adame chained Dark Bribe to negate the Burial and Cohen drew for its effect. With no further plays to be made, he passed.

Adame was up now, and he played Premature Burial targeting Sangan. He used the Sangan as a tribute for Jinzo, searching out Exiled Force. Clearly that Reaper was giving him some trouble. He passed without a spell or trap card down. Cohen was up now, and, seeing impending doom on the field, was forced to make a play. He summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior and attacked Cyber Phoenix, allowing Adame to draw for its effect. Adame summoned Exiled Force and destroyed the Reaper on his turn before taking out Breaker in battle. He attacked with Jinzo as well, dropping Cohen to 4600. He set a spell or trap card and passed.

Cohen set a monster and passed back to Adame, who summoned Spirit Reaper. Cyber Dragon attacked the face down monster, Gravekeeper's Spy, who fetched a pal to block some damage. Spirit Reaper struck home though, and Cohen was forced to discard Dust Tornado. Cohen set another monster and passed to Adame, who flashed Raiza the Storm Monarch. Once again, Cohen scooped up his stuff.

Hugo Adame takes Josh Cohen out of the picture with a fast 2-0 victory, flexing the strength of his transition side decking.
