Round 5: Dave Wilkinson vs. Chris Moosman
Jerome McHale

Dave Wilkinson is usually found judging all the premier events in Utah, but today he’s here and sitting pretty at 4-0 as a part of Team Netdeck. (“Everybody does it, we’re the only ones who admit it.”) Chris Moosman is well-known in online circles, but he’s come to the event today looking to make a real impact as part of Team Junky Spot.

Chris won the roll and opened with a set spell or trap. It was revealed to be Mystical Space Typhoon when Dave hit it with his own Typhoon. Spirit Reaper then hit the table and relieved Chris of his Chaos Sorcerer. Dave set two spells or traps and passed to Chris who used Snatch Steal on the Reaper to destroy it, then set a spell or trap and passed. Dave set a monster and passed back to Chris who summoned Mystic Tomato and attacked into Sakuretsu Armor. Dave flipped Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive and then flipped it back down with Tsukuyomi. The spirit swung directly and Dave set a card before passing. The set Mirror Force was lost to Dust Tornado in the end phase. Chris set a card to each zone and passed to Dave who flipped his Dekoichi up and down again. Tsukuyomi ran into Morphing Jar and both players drew a new hand.

Dave passed back to Chris who had a much better hand now. He summoned Sangan and then used Nobleman of Crossout to get rid of all Dave’s Dekoichis. Sangan tried to attack, but Dave used Scapegoat to block the attacks. Sangan took down a Sheep token and Chris passed back to Dave. Dave flipped down Sangan with Tsukuyomi and then removed it from play with Nobleman of Crossout before attacking. He set a spell or trap and passed back to Chris who lamented his opening hand. He summoned Cyber Dragon but lost it to Bottomless Trap Hole. He ended without a monster on the field and then Breaker the Magical Warrior came down on Dave’s side of the field to break Chris’ Return from the Different Dimension. Dave set a card and passed back to Chris who still couldn’t seem to mount an offensive. He activated Graceful Charity discarding Dust Tornado and Creature Swap before summoning his own Breaker and destroying Dave’s Call of the Haunted. He then played confiscation revealing Matt’s hand of Tsukuyomi, Nobleman of Crossout, Cyber Dragon and Spirit Reaper. He pitched the Nobleman and then removed a light and a dark for Chaos Sorcerer removing Dave’s Breaker. Chris’ breaker hit a sheep and he set a card before passing.

Dave managed to clear out Chris’ field with a combination of Tsukuyomi and Smashing Ground next turn, and Chris set another monster to defend himself. Dave did likewise, but Chris flipped up his Magician of Faith to play Graceful Charity again. This time he discarded Dust Tornado and Cyber Dragon before attacking a sheep and setting a spell or trap. Dave flipped his reaper but was met with Torrential Tribute. He set a monster and Chris set a spell or trap before passing back. Dave set another monster and passed back to Chris, who set a third spell or trap before ending.

Dave flipped another Reaper and then flipped it back down with Tsukuyomi. The spirit tried to attack but Scapegoat blocked the way. At the end of the turn Chris had three Sheep tokens and two set cards to Dave’s two set monsters. Chris flipped his Call to get back Chaos Sorcerer but it went right back after attacking Night Assailant. In main phase two Chris flipped a sheep to attack mode and then sent it over to Dave with Creature Swap. Dave set a monster and switched the Sheep before passing back to Chris. He summoned a Reaper, flipped a Reaper, summoned Chaos Sorcerer and removed Dave’s Tsukuyomi with Nobleman of Crossout. The first Reaper hit and discarded Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World!

The effect of Goldd eliminated the Sorcerer and the Reaper that hadn’t attacked and put Chris back on the defensive. Dave summoned a Sorcerer of his own, removed his stolen Reaper, and then attacked a Sheep token with Goldd. Chris had no response and a mid-attack Enemy Controller switched the Sheep to attack position and ended the game.

Dave – 1 Chris – 0

Chris couldn’t believe it as he side decked, looking more determined than any other competitor in the feature match area thus far. Dave was pretty pleased with himself and worked quickly, beginning to shuffle after minimum side decking. Chris chose to go first in the second game and he started off with Confiscation to discard Spirit Reaper from Dave’s hand. He then set a card to each zone and passed to Dave who did likewise, but added another spell or trap before his end phase. Chris set a card to each zone after flipping Mystic Tomato and attacking Chris’ newly drawn Reaper. He took it out in main phase 2 with Smashing Ground and passed back to Dave who simply set a monster. Chris summoned an Exiled Force but lost everything to Torrential Tribute. Dave took his last card, a Torrential Tribute, with Confiscation, and then set a monster before ending his turn.

Chris was in trouble. He set a monster but lost it to Nobleman of Crossout on the next turn. All copies of Magician of Faith were removed and Dave tributed for Jinzo attacking directly after flipping his set Magician of Faith to retrieve Confiscation. Chris was drawing into traps and he set his topdeck to protect it from Confiscation. With 2000 life points left, Chris finally drew into a monster and set it. The D. D. Warrior Lady took Jinzo out of the game and Chris was back in the game, albeit barely. Dave set a card next turn and then Chris drew and summoned Asura Priest, knowing that Dave had Scapegoat set. He lost the Priest to Confiscation but got a Chaos Sorcerer next turn. The Sorcerer revealed a Reaper with its attack but was destroyed by Zaborg the Thunder Monarch next turn. Chris kept in the game with Book of Moon, and next turn Chris flipped his last spell or trap, a Heavy Storm, forcing Dave to use his Scapegoat. It was irrelevant though as Chris had just drawn another Asura Priest and wiped Dave’s field clean. Dave picked up and set Sakuretsu Armor, but Chris topdecked Breaker the Magical Warrior to destroy it. Breaker hit directly for three turns as Dave drew Heavy Storm and Airknight Parshath, handing game two to an extremely fortunate Chris Moosman.

Dave – 1 Chris – 1

Dave was up first again for game three and set a card to each zone before passing. Chris was praying for a god hand, but he didn’t have it. He did have Reinforcement of the Army which fetched out an Exiled Force. He used it to destroy Dave’s set Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive, set a spell or trap and passed. The set card was soon revealed to be Torrential Tribute when Dave summoned Spirit Reaper next turn. The field was cleared and Dave set a spell or trap before passing. Chris had Graceful Charity on his turn and discarded Spirit Reaper and Zaborg in his search for Heavy Storm. He didn’t get (or at least didn’t play it) and instead set a card. Dave summoned and attacked with Sangan before ending his turn.

Chris looked angrily at the Sangan before removing a light and a dark for Chaos Sorcerer and removing Sangan from play. He set another spell or trap and passed to Dave who set a monster. Chris brought his Exiled Force back up with Premature Burial to eliminate Dave’s set Spirit Reaper and then attacked into Mirror Force. Book of Moon saved the sorcerer from certain doom, and Chris passed his turn. Dave played Confiscation to take Chris’s other Sorcerer and then removed the set Sorcerer with Nobleman of Crossout. He passed without any monsters and then Chris set a monster. Dave passed again and Chris was able to flip Magician of Faith without any contest bringing back Graceful Charity for another round of draw power. Creature Swap and Smashing Ground were discarded and then the Magician attacked. In main phase 2, Confiscation robbed Dave of his Chaos Sorcerer and Chris set a monster before ending. Dave shook his head at his hand and set a monster. Chris flipped his other monster, another Magician, to get Graceful Charity back again. He then played Nobleman of Crossout removing all of Dave’s Magicians from play. Both Magicians attacked directly and Dave drew a Zaborg before passing.

Dave had gone from being relatively in control of the game to struggling to fight off a pair of Magician of Faith. Chris set another spell or trap and passed to Dave who summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior and used its effect to eliminate a Sakuretsu Armor from Chris’ backfield. Breaker hit a Magician and in main phase 2, he used Smashing Ground to try to destroy the other one. It was not to be though as Enemy Controller took control of the Breaker to put it in the way of smashing ground. On the end phase Chris flipped Royal Decree. He then summoned D.D. Warrior Lady and attacked into Scapegoat. On the next turn Asura Priest finished off the sheep and the Warrior Lady attacked directly. Chris kept up the pressure with Sangan and Dave was forced to destroy it with Night Assailant. Sangan fetched out Mystic Swordsman LV2 and Dave went back on the offensive with Snatch Steal, tributing the Lady for Jinzo! He attacked directly with Jinzo but the attack was blocked by Scapegoat! Chris passed and Jinzo ate another sheep before Chris decided to set a monster. The set Mystic Tomato was lost to Zaborg next turn and another Sheep token fell.

Chris had a huge hand at this point and set a card to each zone before passing. Dave battled back with D.D. Warrior Lady removing Chris’ Spirit Reaper and Zaborg finishing of the sheep token. Chris had another Reaper though and Zaborg was unable to break through next turn. Dave played Heavy Storm and set Return from the Different Dimension before passing. Breaker came down next turn to destroy it and Dave was forced to chain, dropping to 400 life points. Chris passed his turn and Dave drew into his Graceful Charity. He looked long and hard before discarding Tsukuyomi and Dekoichi.

He set a card to each zone, attacked Zaborg into Breaker and passed. Chris finally got to use his Swordsman and took out Dave’s facedown Morphing Jar! In main phase 2, he used Creature Swap to hand the Swordsman over to Dave. Dave tributed it for a facedown Cyber Dragon, but Chris still had the Asura Priest from a while back and used it to clear the field while Zaborg attacked for game!

Chris Moosman advances to 5-0 with an intense 2-1 victory over Dave Wilkinson!
