Honolulu Shonen Jump TCG Championship Series Tournament
Metagame Staff

Shonen Jump Hawaii is over and Mario Matheu is the newest Shonen Jump Champion! Having played a total of twelve rounds with his team’s version of the powerful Gladiator Beast deck, Mario was very pleased. He called out to teammate Ryan Hayakawa, who finished third, “and . . . we’re in Hawaii!”

The strongest showing was clearly Team Comic Odyssey, who placed all three of their members in Day 2 and took both first and third place. Alex Ahia, a player from the neighbor island, made a fantastic showing as well, falling only in the finals to Mario.

The Top 16 players were almost all there to congratulate the winners, and the hall cheered as each of the Top 4 went to claim their prizes, which included, among other things, PS3 game systems, A Nintendo DS Lite, a high-end gaming computer, a huge pile of booster packs, three copies of the new promo Doomcaliber Knight, and one very special Shonen Jump Trophy!

A special touch greeted the finalists at the prize table as the event’s head scorekeeper Heidianne Ho gave them each a beautiful flower lei, a gesture used to denote many special honors here in the islands.

It was clear that the ‘Aloha Spirit’ was still going strong as almost every Day 2 player, regardless of the day’s results, gathered around after the award ceremony to sign the official event banner, all joking amongst themselves and laughing.

Of course, those preparing for the next big event, Shonen Jump Championship Toronto on July 25-26, are already trying to find some tool or ‘tech’ to power through the dominating Gladiator Beasts, which were played on both sides of the final table today. Will they continue to dominate, or will something new emerge to shift the metagame? We’ll find out in two weeks!

Until then, keep your wits sharp and your Prohibitions at the ready.

From all of us to all of you — Aloha!

Day 2
Here's a glimpse of our top competitors receiving their well-deserved prizes!
Alex’s deck was built along with friends Kawelo Malama and Brandon Waihee. He told me that some local players are starting a team, too: Team Pagoda.
Ryan is one of two Team Comic Odyssey players in the Top 4, and his teammates are cheering him on.
Both players were noticeably silent during the pre-game.
Wade’s deck, with 50 cards, has drawn eyes all weekend, while Alex, comfortable with his Gladiator Beast build, has been pretty quiet.
Aloha, and welcome to the second day of Shonen Jump Hawaii.
Day 1
A strong 154 players battled it out over an exciting eight rounds of Swiss with some of the best in the country reaching toward that elusive Day 2 cut and a shot at the hottest prize in the Yu-Gi-Oh! world today, Doomcaliber Knight!
The results seem to show some good information that might be useful for upcoming events.
154 players, and they’re ready to go.
Carl Emerson, from a neighbor island, has placed 3rd in a local Regionals, while his opponent, Daniel, has had three appearances in the Top 8 of Regional Championships . . . but no win yet.
Ronald Ribao had just come from breaking Chris Bowling’s winning streak in the previous round.
One of the higher-ranked players in the world, Ryan Hayakawa from Team Comic Odyssey, was matched against Alex ‘Aka’ Ahia, a player from the town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii.
When people saw that Chris Bowling, the current US National Champion, was playing here in Hawaii, everyone had the same question. “What is he playing?”
Adrian gets to play a lot in Canada, and was glad to have a chance to test his skills against a bigger field at such a prestigious event.
Nolan Takahashi, one of the highest ranked players in the state, is playing against another local, John Santos.
Albert Lee has won three Regional Championships here in Hawaii, and has been to Nationals twice. Wade has been invited to Nationals in the past but was never able to attend.
Chris is playing a variant on Dark Armed Dragon, while Kolby is piloting the powerful Gladiator Beasts.
It's time to duel island-style, as players gather for Shonen Jump Championship Honolulu, the largest Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG tournament the state has ever seen.
