The Forgotten Format: The New OTK
Ryan Murphy

With the announcement of changes to the Advanced format Forbidden and Limited lists, new cards find themselves tossed into the chasm of Traditional binders and decks, now exiled from tournament play. However, other cards become more accessible, allowing more of them to be played. For those who already delve into the Forbidden, this heralds exciting opportunities for new decks. Today, I’ll be taking advantage of the eased restriction on a few cards to create a potent, aggressive deck that can sweep an opponent away in a matter of turns. This is a version of a deck I saw at Shonen Jump Championship Indianapolis, run by a friend of mine. He challenged me between rounds of the Traditional tournament and consistently 2-0’ed me. It was a little embarrassing, to say the least.

The two major cards that allow this deck to operate so quickly are Pot of Avarice and Jinzo. You’ll be able to draw your deck quickly and take huge swings at your opponent’s life points without worry. The entire deck works together, dumping whoppers into the graveyard for recursion, tossing Lights and Darks in the graveyard for future removal, and drawing many cards during a single turn to help find everything you need to quickly overwhelm an opponent.

The Monsters:

There are a few rather eccentric choices in the monster line-up, contrasted by several monsters you’ll see in almost any Traditional Chaos deck. First, we’ll start with the recognizable.

1 Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning

1 Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End

3 Cyber Dragon

1 Tribe-Infecting Virus

1 Breaker the Magical Warrior

1 Witch of the Black Forest

1 Sangan

1 Morphing Jar

The backbone of a Chaos deck is shown here with some of the most powerful monsters in the game. The Envoys and multiple copies of Cyber Dragon will provide quick swings at your opponent’s life points. Each other card will help you gain more cards and options than your opponent, pushing that player into a corner you can beat him or her against.

Next, we’ll look at some of the more unorthodox choices of the deck.

1 Dark Magician of Chaos

2 Jinzo

3 Sillva, Warlord of Dark World

2 Magical Merchant

1 Snipe Hunter

1 Card Trooper

1 Cyber-Stein

Here, you’ll notice the three copies of Sillva, Warlord of Dark World. First, we are running Dark World monsters to make the deck more aggressive. The spell line-up will help complement this. Second, I’ve chosen Sillva over Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World because of Delinquent Duo. If your opponent claps his or her hands giddily and slaps it down before you draw a sixth card, you can respond by special summoning Sillva and stripping him or her of two cards instead.

You’ll notice that we have an excessive amount of tribute monsters: two copies of Jinzo (recently brought up to Semi-Limitation) and Dark Magician of Chaos to complement the other eight monsters in our deck with over four stars. That’s a lot of powerhouses. We support these by running multiple copies of Magical Merchant, Snipe Hunter, Card Trooper, and the Tribe-Infecting Virus we’ve already justified by running Dark World. We should never have a problem keeping these cards from being dead draws. Finally, what would an aggressive One-Turn KO deck be without a random Cyber-Stein?

The Spells:

Again, you’ll see some rather typical cards accompanied by some unorthodox ones. I’ve included three copies of Dark World Dealings to fill two requirements of the deck: to draw as many cards as possible and to turn dead cards in your hand into useful ones. We are also packing two copies of Pot of Avarice to draw even more cards. As a side note, this deck doesn’t despair when you accidentally pitch a Chaos monster in the graveyard. All you’ll have to do is use Avarice to put it back into your deck and draw it again!

1 Card Destruction

1 Pot of Greed

1 Graceful Charity

1 Painful Choice

1 Premature Burial

1 Monster Reborn

1 Heavy Storm

1 Harpie’s Feather Duster

1 Raigeki

1 Dark Hole

1 Change of Heart

1 Snatch Steal

1 Brain Control

2 Pot of Avarice

3 Dark World Dealings

We’ve also included the one allotted copy of Brain Control, which has long been absent from competitive Traditional decks. However, considering the nature of the strategy, I find it warranted. T-Hero and other such decks took advantage of the enormous life point swings this card can create. We are also running Card Destruction, which is a powerhouse here. You’ll discard monsters and draw into more cards that will draw into . . . more cards. If you’re noticing a trend with this deck, you’re right. Draw as many cards as you can until you’ve drawn the most amazing hand possible. Then special summon enough monsters to defeat your opponent in one turn.

The Traps:

Oddly enough, this deck only runs two traps. Ring of Destruction will allow you to “ring for game” and Call of the Haunted will allow for more special summons. As a side note, you’ll need to watch out for Imperial Order. Try to bait it out early in the game or save your Breaker for it. It’ll ruin this deck.

1 Ring of Destruction

1 Call of the Haunted

Playing the Deck

Because of the nature of this strategy, you’ll normally open up with a hand split between three types of cards: cards that draw more cards, game-ending monsters, and cards that special summon. You’ll want to draw many cards and discard your game-ending monsters. If you can’t win, I wouldn’t waste your special summoning capabilities. You’ll have to gauge the amount of damage you can deal, how many cards you can remove from your opponent’s field when you make a move, and whether or not you’ll be able to win in a single turn if you wait a little longer. Just be ready to make your move when the opportunity presents itself. Be even more ready for angry opponents sick of being beaten in a single fell swoop!
