Round 10: Keanson Ye vs. Oscar Castaneda
Jerome McHale

This is probably the most emotionally charged match we’ve seen so far this weekend. Team Junky Spot members Keanson Ye and Oscar Castaneda are now forced to face off against each other. Back before this tournament started, Oscar showed me his Diamond Dude Turbo inspired Chimeratech Overdragon deck. He lost early on, but in the end he’s made it all the way here to the last round at 8-1, and the only person who can stop him is his own teammate who helped him build and test the deck. There’s no easy way out of this, and that means that both of these players need to be at the top of their game with a Top 16 spot on the line.

Keanson won the opening roll, and started off with Confiscation. Oscar had Reasoning, Monster Gate, Cyber Phoenix, Sakuretsu Armor, and Snatch Steal. Keanson chose to pitch the Cyber Phoenix. Keanson then set a card to each zone and passed to Oscar, who simply set a spell or trap. Keanson had Card Trooper next turn, and he pumped it up to 1900. He then flipped Sangan and attacked successfully with both. Play passed back to Oscar who summoned Cyber Dragon and activated Reasoning. Keanson called 6, but Cyber Dragon came off the top of the deck.

Now Oscar had two Cyber Dragons to work with, and he thought long and hard before activating Heavy Storm. He lost his own Sakuretsu Armor and took out Keanson’s Mystical Space Typhoon. Good thing he did, because it would have easily countered the Snatch Steal that he played next! He stole the Trooper and pumped it up, attacking Sangan and then going direct with both Cyber Dragons. Sangan searched out Mystic Tomato for Keanson, and Oscar used Monster Gate in main phase two, trading in Card Trooper for Blowback Dragon. Oscar was out of cards in hand, but he had three huge monsters on the field. Keanson’s field was bare, but he had five cards in hand. He summoned Mystic Tomato and activated Creature Swap. Oscar gave him a Cyber Dragon, and Keanson used it to attack his own Tomato. Tomato turned into another Tomato, and, in main phase two, Smashing Ground took down Oscar’s remaining Cyber Dragon. Keanson set a card and play was back to Oscar. Blowback Dragon failed to destroy Mystic Tomato, and was then tributed for Jinzo. Jinzo blew away Cyber Dragon, but was destroyed in turn by Zaborg! Oscar topdecked Overload Fusion, but he lost his last ditch Chimeratech Overdragon to Sakuretsu Armor, and the game was over!

Both players side decked between games and, after counting everything out, it was Oscar’s turn to start. The players shook hands, and Oscar opened up with Card Trooper, dumping Cyber Dragon, Enemy Controller, and Magical Stone Excavation to the graveyard. Keanson used Heavy Storm to blast Oscar’s set Sakuretsu Armor and then summoned Banisher of the Radiance to attack and remove Trooper. He set a spell or trap and passed back to Oscar, who activated Reasoning. Keanson called wrong, and Cyber Dragon came out to the field just long enough to be swallowed up by Bottomless Trap Hole! Snatch Steal stole away Banisher, and Keanson took a little damage. He set a monster, which was revealed to be Gravekeeper’s Spy next turn when Oscar attacked. He summoned a Cyber Phoenix and passed back to Keanson who summoned a Mystic Tomato to destroy the Phoenix. Tomato was taken down in turn by Banisher, and both players set a monster. Keanson flipped Spirit Reaper and stole back his Banisher, but lost both to Mirror Force! He set a monster, but it was revealed to be Card Trooper and destroyed next turn by a new Cyber Phoenix. Card Trooper came down for Keanson next turn, and he activated it before using Premature Burial to pull back Banisher. Banisher fell to Ring of Destruction during battle, and Card Trooper attacked directly only to be stopped by Scapegoat! One Sheep was destroyed, and Oscar had a Card Trooper of his own to take down Keanson’s! Keanson switched a Spy to attack mode to take down Oscar’s Card Trooper before setting a card to each zone and passing.

Oscar once again moved up to three set spell or traps and passed back to Keanson, who attacked with his Spy. The Spy was destroyed by Sakuretsu Armor and play returned to Oscar, who simply passed his turn. Keanson switched his other Spy to attack position and attacked before setting a monster and ending. Oscar merely passed once again, and Keanson flipped Treeborn Frog and destroyed both of Oscar’s remaining Sheep Tokens. Oscar wasn’t about to get beat down by a Frog, and he played Reasoning. Keanson called 6, but Exiled Force hit the field! Brain Control stole Gravekeeper’s Spy, and, in response, Keanson activated Threatening Roar. He tributed both monsters for Dark Magician of Chaos, pulling back Scapegoat. Keanson had Mind Crush, however, and he called for the Scapegoat, forcing Oscar to discard it and revealing that he probably would have won this turn if it wasn’t for the Threatening Roar! Oscar traded in his Dark Magician of Chaos for Treeborn Frog with Monster Gate and the crowd went wild! Keanson activated Mystical Space Typhoon on his turn to destroy Oscar’s set Torrential Tribute. Keanson claimed that Oscar had nothing left in the deck to stop him now, and he summoned Zaborg. He was wrong, however, and lost Zaborg to Pulling the Rug, causing the crowd to go wild again! He set a spell or trap and passed back to Oscar who set a monster. In the next turn, D.D. Warrior Lady removed Treeborn Frog and play returned to Oscar who set a spell or trap. Keanson had another Zaborg and he summoned him to destroy Oscar’s set Card Trooper! Zaborg attacked directly, and Keanson took the game while Oscar had only two cards in his deck and the combo in hand. Keanson Ye takes down his own teammate to guarantee his slot in Top 16!
