Despite the shared last name, these two duelists are not related — they are, however, friends thanks to their mutual link to Dale Bellido. Audrey is Dale’s girlfriend of three years (“we met through Yu-Gi-Oh, by the way”), and she’s no joke. While she’s the definite underdog beside Top 8 Nationals competitor Jason Tan, both of these competitors are 3-0 heading into this round, and Audrey is quickly gaining a reputation for her table skills.
Game 1
Audrey won the roll and opened with Solar Recharge, discarding Celestia, Lightsworn Angel to draw two cards and send Foolish Burial and Cold Wave to the graveyard. She was left with a hand full of monsters, two of which were Honest. She set a monster and ended.
“Hey Jason, your shirt is shiny,” remarked Audrey, noting the reflections of light coming off of Jason’s hand. “You must have Prisma or something.” Wow, that’s a first. Jason, suddenly self-conscious, sheepishly angled his hand toward the table. He summoned Gladiator Beast Secutor, attacked into Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, and when Audrey sent Wulf, Lightsworn Beast to the graveyard with Ryko’s effect he removed Wulf from the graveyard with D.D. Crow to stop its special summon. He lost Secutor, and ended his turn by setting a spell or trap card. That left him with just three cards in hand.
Audrey summoned Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner, made a direct attack, then ended. She sent Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior, Beckoning Light, and Judgment Dragon to the graveyard — she was already holding another Dragon.
Jason set two more cards to his back row.
“Dude, no monsters? Seriously? You’re not going to summon your Prisma?” Audrey gave a smirk as she alluded to the reflections in Jason’s shirt earlier.
“No,” replied Jason flatly, ending his turn. Audrey was holding Celestia, two Honest, Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, and Monster Reborn. “You have a Solemn face down . . .” accused Audrey.
“No I don’t . . .”
Audrey just laughed in a friendly way. She tributed Lumina for Celestia, forcing Jason to flip Solemn Judgment, and then special summoned Judgment Dragon. She paid for its effect with priority, Jason chained Bottomless Trap Hole, and lost his Wind Blast. That left Audrey free to special summon Celestia with Monster Reborn. She made a direct attack and set Wind Blast.
Jason summoned Gladiator Beast Murmillo, and then special summoned Test Tiger. Audrey flipped Phoenix Wing Wind Blast to discard Honest and spin away the Tiger. Jason activated Book of Moon, flipped Celestia face down and ran her over with Murmillo. That let him tag out for Gladiator Beast Laquari, and he ended with just that one card left.
Audrey drew Wulf, Lightsworn Beast, no help with her other remaining card: Honest. Jason swung with Laquari, set a monster, and next turn Audrey ditched her Wulf for Solar Recharge. She summoned Card Trooper, sent three cards to the graveyard to power it up, and was left with Honest and Mystical Space Typhoon — no immediate obvious plays to make.
“It’s a Morphing Jar, isn’t it.” She set Typhoon and rammed Card Trooper into Jason’s set monster, which turned out to be Spirit Reaper. Things weren’t looking good. Jason ran the Trooper over with Laquari next turn, but didn’t turn the Reaper to attack mode. Audrey drew for Trooper and Jason spent some time contemplating whether or not he wanted to tag out. He eventually opted to do so, bringing in Gladiator Beast Bestiari in defense mode to destroy Audrey’s set Mystical Space Typhoon. “Go ahead.”
Necro Gardna came off the top of Audrey’s deck — she’d drawn Ehren, Lightsworn Monk off of the Card Trooper. She set Necro Gardna, passed play to Jason, and verbally bluffed that she had set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. “I swear, my Gardnas are pissing me off, they’re not coming out!” Jason took the bait, summoning Elemental Hero Prisma, mimicking Bestiari, then contact Fusing for Gladiator Beast Gyzarus. Gyzarus destroyed Audrey’s face-down Necro Gardna, and Jason realized his mistake! He tried to attack, but the Gardna negated his attempt
With Gyzarus stuck in attack mode, Jason ended his turn. That left Audrey free to summon Ehren, attacking Gyzarus, and pressing for 1600 damage with Honest on the turn that followed. Suddenly less giggly, Audrey described her situation: “I wanted to do that last turn,” she explained, “but you put your Bestiari in defense mode. I couldn’t attack over that crap for game.”
Audrey Tan takes a back-and-forth Game 1 with a clever bluff that pays off huge, tricking Jason Tan right into a game shot with Honest! Nice.
Game 2
Jason started the second game with Elemental Hero Stratos, searching out Elemental Hero Prisma before setting a whopping four cards to his back row. Audrey activated Cold Wave — she was holding Heavy Storm, and would surely love to draw out a Solemn.
She did — Tan flipped it, and had no way to stop Audrey when she followed up with Heavy! He lost Bottomless Trap Hole, Book of Moon, and Light-Imprisoning Mirror in one fell swoop! Audrey followed up, special summoning Wulf, Lightsworn Beast with Foolish Burial, then setting Necro Gardna. The Cold Wave into Heavy play was perfect.
Jason brought back Stratos with Premature Burial, getting another Elemental Hero Prisma. He set a monster, ended, and Audrey drew into Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner. She summoned Ehren, Lightsworn Monk instead, attacked over Stratos with Wulf, then sent Ehren to kick back Jason’s face-down Sangan. She sent three cards to her graveyard for Ehren in the end phase. Jason summoned Prisma, didn’t activate its effect, and sent Prisma to attack Ehren — Necro Gardna negated the attack. He ended, and next turn Audrey summoned Lumina, discarded to special summon Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior, and Jason scooped it up!
Audrey Tan devastates Jason Tan with a series of bluffs and quick-witted plays, moving on with a 4-0 record. A shocking demonstration of skill from the newcomer Audrey Tan!
