As they shuffled up for the start of the match, both players knew that they needed to win this match to make Top 8. The mood was still light, though, and the two competitors joked around as if they had known each other forever.
Game 1
Maxwell won the die roll and elected to go first. He opened the game with Delinquent Duo, forcing Craig to discard Mirror Force. Craig then chose and discarded Enemy Controller. Craig quickly returned the favor with his own Duo, dropping the Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys and an Enemy Controller. Both players had a face-down card and a defense monster on their first turn. Craig swung first with his D.D. Assailant into Magician of Faith. Enemy Controller returned to Maxwell’s hand and he then played Scapegoat for protection.
Craig tributed his Assailant for Airknight Parshath and trampled through the goat. Airknight bit the dust via Smashing Ground, and Maxwell set a monster. Craig summoned Sangan and attacked a face-down Apprentice Magician that couldn’t get his effect because of the clogged field. Maxwell wasn’t particularly happy with this, but he tributed his Sinister Serpent for Jinzo anyway and then removed Light and Dark for Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning.
BLS attacked Sangan for 2000 damage, and Craig got D. D. Warrior Lady. Maxwell went for the game, but Scapegoat stopped his assault. Two sheep bit the dust, and the game went on. Craig tried to get rid of Jinzo with D. D. Warrior Lady, but an Enemy Controller from Maxwell put a stop to it. She was removed from the game next turn by BLS, and Jinzo hit another sheep.
With just one sheep between him and oblivion, Craig set a monster and used Smashing Ground on the Luster Soldier. Maxwell destroyed Craig’s useless Dust Tornado with a Mystical Space Typhoon and flip summoned a Magician of Faith to get back Delinquent Duo and play it. The Magician hit the last sheep, and Jinzo swung directly.
Craig managed to summon his own BLS and attacked Magician of Faith and Jinzo for a grand total of 3300 damage. He then set a monster and ended. Maxwell was on the defensive for a change, and Craig knew he had to make it count, but the time wasn’t quite right so he just removed a monster with BLS and passed. Craig continued to play defensively, setting monsters and removing sheep tokens from the game, while Maxwell tried to recover by setting more face-down cards.
Craig was clearly looking for Heavy Storm to make all his troubles go away, but it just wasn’t showing up. A Ring of Destruction was activated in an attempt to end the game, but Book of Moon foiled it. BLS was flipped again but fell into Maxwell’s Bottomless Trap Hole. D.D. Assailant was flipped, but it also fell into a Bottomless Trap Hole. In the end, Sinister Serpent was left to bring the pain and it attacked for 300, leaving Maxwell with 500 life points.
Craig’s next attack was foiled by Scapegoat, and the one after that was foiled by a Ring of Destruction on Sinister Serpent. Craig used Snatch Steal on a sheep token to try to go for the game, but that attempt failed as well because of a Book of Moon. He finally used Metamorphosis on the stolen sheep token to turn it into a Thousand-Eyes Restrict, giving him the chance to activate Torrential Tribute. Craig could only set a monster, however, and pass the turn.
Maxwell followed suit with a monster and a face-down spell or trap. Craig thought long and hard about his next move, finally flipping Magician of Faith and summoning Blade Knight. Blade ran into D. D. Warrior Lady and was removed. Magician of Faith swung, leaving Maxwell with 900 life points. Maxwell summoned a D.D. Assailant to try to launch an offensive, but Scapegoat stopped it cold. Maxwell then drew Swords of Revealing Light and summoned another D.D. Assailant, followed on the next turn by Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer, to slowly bring himself back into the game.
Craig finally found Premature Burial and used it to bring back his Black Luster Soldier in another attempt to end the game, but Book of Moon foiled the attack. Craig played Swords of Revealing Light to try to cripple any resistance Maxwell could offer on the next turn. He flipped the BLS again on the next turn, and Maxwell paused for a while before activating Torrential Tribute. It didn’t matter, however, as Craig had Call of the Haunted to bring back BLS one more time to end the game.
Craig-1 Maxwell-0
Game 2
Neither player wished to side deck, so they moved on to what could have been the final duel for one of them. Maxwell had lost previously, so he retained the option to go first and exercised it. He started off defensively with a face-down monster and a face-down spell or trap. Craig started things off with a Nobleman of Crossout and his own face-down monster. He finished the turn off with Swords of Revealing Light.
Maxwell set a monster and passed, only to have Craig eliminate more of his hand with Delinquent Duo. Bad went to worse when Craig flipped Magician of Faith and finished off Maxwell’s hand with another hit from Delinquent Duo. He summoned D.D. Assailant and attacked into Maxwell’s D.D. Assailant, removing both, and the Magician swung unopposed. It happened again next turn, too, as Maxwell was at a loss for drawing monsters. The puny monster brigade continued its assault as Sinister Serpent was added to Craig’s field, while Maxwell wondered why everyone had to watch the Sinister beat him up every turn.
Maxwell continued his monsterless streak, so he set a third face-down card. Craig had anticipated this and flipped a face-down Heavy Storm to clear the field. Maxwell chained Scapegoat, so Craig tributed the Serpent for Airknight Parshath and continued with his relentless assault. Maxwell summoned Reflect Bounder to try to stall for time and attacked the Magician of Faith. He played Smashing Ground to eliminate D.D. Assailant, but Airknight still continued to pose a problem, trampling over the sheep and adding to Craig’s overwhelming hand advantage.
Maxwell took a chance by summoning Hand of Nephthys and activating its effect to bring out the Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. There was no response from Craig, so Airknight went down for 500 damage. Craig flipped another Magician to retrieve Enemy Controller, summoned a D.D. Assailant, and then used the Controller to tribute Magician of Faith to steal Nephthys and end the match.
Craig Carver wins 2-0 and will be coming back tomorrow for the Top 8. |
