“I gotta win this; I got a speeding ticket,” remarked Brewer, a nineteen year-old player for Team C2.
“I got ten kids to feed; what’s your problem?” grinned Lyn, as both players took their seats and shuffled up. Decks were presented and shuffled very quickly. Both duelists were eager to get to it, as the winner of this match would guarantee themselves a copy of Crush Card Virus!
John Brewer is armed with Fifth Gadget, packing Banisher of the Radiance and a number of other tricks. Lyn is using his Rusty Bucket of Bolts deck, an innovative Chimeratech Overdragon build that uses Ancient Gear monsters and Ancient Gear Drill to search out its combo pieces.
Lyn won the die roll and started the match, activating Future Fusion! He declared Chimeratech Overdragon and stripped his deck of fourteen Machines! He then activated Nightmare’s Steelcage and ended his turn. Brewer set two back row cards and ended: no Gadgets for him. Lyn passed back, Brewer set a monster, Nightmare’s Steelcage blew off the field and Lyn drew. Future Fusion resolved, bringing Chimeratech the field. It blew away Future Fusion and was immediately destroyed. Overload Fusion removed fifteen Machines from Lyn’s graveyard, brought out a massive Chimeratech, and Dimension Fusion then brought back Drillroid . . . it was going to bring back more monsters, but Brewer scooped as soon as Drillroid hit the field.
Paul Lyn chalks up the one-turn KO, and is just one duel away from winning a Crush Card Virus!
Brewer opened the second duel with Confiscation! He quickly stripped Lyn’s hand of Graceful Charity, and summoned Red Gadget to pull Yellow Gadget from his deck. He set two back row cards and ended.
Lyn set a card to each zone. Brewer summoned Yellow Gadget, searched for Green, and attacked, but Lyn flipped Waboku. His attacked Dekoichi flipped, and he drew a card while maintaining his field presence. “Go ahead,” announced Brewer. Lyn activated Heavy Storm! He destroyed his opponent’s Ultimate Offering and Widespread Ruin, and then summoned Drillroid. His Dekoichi and Drillroid attacked both Gadgets to clear them off the field and drop Brewer to 6500 life points. “I’ll set and end my turn,” declared Lyn politely, setting a spell or trap.
Snipe Hunter hit Lyn’s side of the field and discarded Premature Burial to target Drillroid, destroying it with a successful roll. Snipe Hunter then attacked Dekoichi, destroying it too, and Brewer set two cards to his back row. Lyn was up.
He passed back almost immediately, and Brewer summoned Green Gadget to search his deck for a copy of Red Gadget. He turned Snipe Hunter to defense position and then attacked with Green Gadget, evening the life point totals. Lyn set Mirror Force, but lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon on Brewer‘s turn. Brewer summoned Red Gadget to grab Yellow. Red and Green attacked, but Waboku stopped them from dealing damage. Brewer activated D. D. Designator in main phase 2, declaring Threatening Roar and removing one copy from Lyn’s hand! D. D. Designator in the semifinals of a Shonen Jump? Good stuff.
Lyn activated Card Destruction, set a spell or trap, and ended. Brewer summoned Chiron the Mage, and discarded Fissure to try and destroy Lyn’s set card, but watched as Lyn chained it: Threatening Roar! Brewer passed, Lyn activated Swords of Revealing Light, Snipe Hunter activated to destroy it (discarding Cyber Dragon), and Red Gadget, Green Gadget, Chiron the Mage, and Snipe Hunter all attacked directly for 6000 damage! Lyn was down to just 500 life points.
He drew, set a spell or trap and ended. Brewer pressed with everything on the following turn, and his horde of Machines ran over Lyn.
John Brewer uses both Chiron the Mage and Snipe Hunter, plus a surprising D. D. Designator, to dominate his opponent and move on to a third game!
Both competitors did some quick side decking, shuffled the decks extensively, and play began. Lyn opted to go first.
He set one card to his back row and passed. Brewer summoned Yellow Gadget, took Green, set Ring of Destruction and attacked for 1200. He set another card to his back row and passed to Lyn.
Ancient Gear Soldier was summoned by Lyn, but he lost it immediately to Ring of Destruction. He then activated Future Fusion, declared Chimeratech Overdragon and removed ten Machines from his deck, sending them to the graveyard to end his turn. Brewer set a second spell or trap, turned Yellow Gadget to defense and contemplated his next move: he set Green Gadget, set another spell or trap and ended. When you’re setting Gadgets, things are bad.
“My go?” asked Lyn. Brewer nodded.
Lyn activated Graceful Charity, discarded Ancient Gear Soldier, thought a bit, and then ditched Gravity Bind. “Go ahead,” he said. Brewer set another monster, Exiled Force, and passed back. Lyn drew, special summoned his Chimeratech, lost his set Threatening Roar to it, and then lost the Chimeratech when it destroyed Future Fusion. He activated Heavy Storm, destroying Brewer’s set Fissure, Ultimate Offering, and Torrential Tribute! He then set two back row cards, set a monster, and activated Nightmare’s Steelcage. Brewer flip summoned Exiled Force, tributed it to destroy Lyn’s set Morphing Jar, and Brewer set three cards to his spell and trap zone.
Lyn summoned Des Wombat and attacked Yellow Gadget. Brewer flip summoned Green Gadget, activated Hammer Shot to destroy Des Wombat, and then flipped Premature Burial to special summon back his Yellow Gadget! He used its effect to search out Green Gadget and ended his turn. Nightmare’s Steelcage was destroyed, and the duel stood at 5900 to 5500.
Lyn set another spell or trap. Brewer summoned Green Gadget, lost his field to Torrential Tribute, and searched for Red to end his turn. Lyn set a third spell or trap again, then Brewer summoned Red Gadget and attacked into Waboku. Lyn flipped Giant Trunade! He activated Overload Fusion and Brewer scooped!
Chimeratech Overdragon wins the match, and a Crush Card, for Paul Lyn! Rusty Bucket of Bolts moves to the finals!
“Make sure everyone knows, I ripped that Overload!” said Lyn, with an honest smile. He’d played to his outs and it had paid off. Now, he’d be duking it out for the title of Shonen Jump Champion!
