Deck Profile: Claro Runtal
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl are symbols of the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game. They’re highly recognizable, but it’s often difficult to get a playable deck out of them. Claro Runtal managed to build just that for the inaugural Shonen Jump Championship.

1 Creature Swap
1 Premature Burial
1 Cost Down
1 Snatch Steal

1 Call of the Haunted

The monster selection is interesting. The 3/2 split between the two key tribute monsters is seen pretty often, but Dark Magician of Chaos adds some bulk to the deck. The reason for its inclusion is its ability to allow key spells, like Sage’s Stone, to be reused. Apprentice Magician is a lynchpin card and an amazing opener, allowing Magician of Faith and Old Vindictive Magician to be searched out as needed, as well as maintaining board position. Cyber Jar helps rip through the deck as quickly as possible, and Breaker and Tribe are just really freakin’ good.

The deck uses a lot of cool spells to get out Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl without paying for them. Sage’s Stone, Reasoning, and Dedication Through Light and Darkness all get out the high-level monsters that would really prefer not to eat your spell-casters when they come into play. Mirage of Nightmare helps power through the deck to get some big monsters in the graveyard, where they can be brought back into play via the recursive cards. Painful Choice works in the same way. Creature Swap is great, because it can be used to hand off your used up Magician of Faiths and Old Vindictive Magicians.

Dust Tornado, Ring of Destruction, and Call of the Haunted are definitely popular picks, but Wind Storm of Etaqua is not, even though it should be. It’s an impressive card, and the only thing that seems to hold it back is the fact that it’s an obscure promo.

A lot of things about this deck are worthy of imitation. The main thing of note is that it uses a couple of promos to their utmost potential, and it really benefits from them as a result. Sage’s Stone is great. Wind Storm of Etaqua can also make a big impact in Advanced, if players are diligent enough to seek it out. If you’re the type who’s always trying to rebuild a Dark Magician deck, then this could be a good final build for you!
