Alvaro Castoneda brought a Chaos/Warrior deck to the Shonen Jump Championship event, which was a popular choice for many participants. If you walked down one row of tables, you’d usually see at least four Chaos/Warrior decks. Chaos and Chaos variants were certainly the most frequently seen archetypes at the event, but Alvaro had an interesting twist in the Warrior lineup. Past staple monsters such as Goblin Attack Force, Don Zaloog, and Blindy Loyal Goblin have been phased out and replaced with cards from the second most recently released set, Soul of the Duelist.
Have a look.

As far as monsters go, there’s a good mix of Chaos and Warrior types. Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning is there, with the usual copies of Shining Angel, D. D. Warrior Lady, and Breaker the Magical Warrior. However, the Warrior portion is pretty interesting. Warrior decks used to feature the big bad Goblin Attack Force, the dependable Blindly Loyal Goblin, and the card-stripping Don Zaloog. However, Alvaro has chosen not to play them, instead bringing in the field-clearing Mystic Swordsman LV4 and Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke. Both destroy defense position monsters with their effects, prevent flip effects from activating, and give a clearer shot at life points. Marauding Captain is there to rally the troops, and circumvent Mystic Swordsman’s Normal summoning drawback. Mobius the Frost Monarch will tech against Lockdown, while Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer makes other Chaos decks a little harder to bring off. Jinzo and the ever-popular Magical Scientist bring the monster total up to 16.
The spells are more or less standard, although it’s surprising to see that Alvaro is not maindecking Reinforcements of the Army. Instead he uses a lineup of staple spell cards, adding in Enemy Controller, The Forceful Sentry, Confiscation and Nobleman of Extermination for some extra control of both field and hand.
The traps are also fairly standard. Magic Drain offers some protection against opponent’s spell cards, Waboku and Magic Cylinder both prevent damage, Ring of Destruction and Torrential Tribute will remove monsters, and Call of the Haunted will fetch back a valiant defeated. These cards are more or less game staples.
Side Deck
1 Dust Tornado
1 Sinister Serpent
1 Nobleman
1 Mystic Swordsman LV2
1 Ceasefire
2 Reinforcement of the Army
1 Zaborg the Thunder Monarch
1 Tribe-Infecting Virus
1 Hallowed Life Barrier
2 Giant Trunade
1 Exiled Force
2 Cliff the Trap Remover
Alvaro includes more spell and trap removal in his side deck. A common worry at the event seemed to be Stall or Burn type decks, so many duelists put in cards like Dust Tornado, Cliff the Trap Remover, and Giant Trunade to break out of a lockdown. The absent Reinforcements of the Army can be found here, to rev up the Warrior part of the deck, and Tribe Infecting Virus if the forecast is Swarm. Hallowed Life Barrier was a popular choice against Direct Damage decks, and it was included here.
Fusion Deck
2 Thousand-Eyes Restrict
1 Fiend Skull Dragon
3 Sanwitch
1 Musician King
1 Dark Flare Knight
1 Ryu Senshi
1 Dark Balter the Terrible
1 Ojama King
2 Dark Blade the Dragon Knight
All the usual Scientist utility fusions are here to be called upon when necessary.
Chaos/Warrior was definitely a type that was hard to miss at the event, and it was interesting to see this variation. Substituting the newer Warrior-type monsters did change the older “control” of the deck, but the new direction should combo well with the Chaos aspects. Whether or not the substitutions will catch on in the broader metagame still remains to be seen.
