Round 8: Anthony Duke vs. Mike Glowacki
Jason Grabher-Meyer

These two duelists provided me with a rare opportunity. So far in this format we haven’t had a Six Samurai feature match, and this round I got a chance to see how Samurai fare against Comic Odyssey burn. It was irresistible, and since both of these duelists had 6-1 records heading into the round it seemed like a good idea. These two competitors had never played each other, but after brief introductions the match was underway.

Duke opened with a set card to each zone. Glowacki set a spell or trap, and next turn Duke flip summoned Card Trooper. He boosted it, losing Dimension Wall in the process, and summoned Sangan to attack for 2900 damage total. He set three more cards to his back row to finish.

Glowacki activated Heavy Storm, but Duke hit him with Judgment of Anubis, discarding Morphing Jar. Glowacki summoned The Six Samurai - Zanji and attacked Sangan; Duke flipped Wall of Revealing Light and paid 3000 life points to prevent the attack. Glowacki set two more cards to the back row.

Sangan went to defense and Duke boosted Trooper again. He attacked, but his opponent flipped Magic Cylinder to dish out 1900 damage. Duke set a monster to finish his turn. Glowacki set a spell or trap card. Duke turned Trooper to defense and set another card to the back row. Glowacki drew for next turn and Duke activated Crush Card Virus tributing Sangan in the draw phase, but hit nothing at all in Glowacki’s monster-free hand! Duke grabbed Tomato with Sangan and Glowacki passed.

Trooper hit him next turn for just 400 damage, dropping Glowacki to 4600 life points. Duke had only 3100, but he also had control over the duel.

Glowacki topdecked into The Six Samurai - Irou, but lost him to Crush Card. Next turn, he lost Enemy Controller to Mystical Space Typhoon. Duke boosted Card Trooper to 1900 ATK and attacked for a clean shot. Glowacki dropped to 2700 life points.

He drew Card Trooper next turn and set it, clinging to field presence in order to survive. Duke flip summoned Dark Mimic LV3, Glowacki responded with Torrential Tribute, and both duelists drew for their Card Trooper. Duke summoned Mystic Tomato, lost it to Mirror Force, and ended.

Reasoning was Glowacki’s next play. It got him The Six Samurai - Yaichi, and Duke dropped to 2100 life points to pay for Skill Drain in response to the summon. He was leaving no space for Jinzo, should Glowacki be running him. Hammer Shot blew away Yaichi next turn, Glowacki passed, Duke passed, and Glowacki set a spell or trap card.

Duke passed back, Glowacki passed, and Duke summoned Dark Mimic LV3. It attacked and Glowacki blocked it with Enemy Controller. A fifth card to Duke’s back row ended his turn. Glowacki special summoned Cyber Dragon, activated Brain Control, took Dark Mimic LV3, and activated United We Stand, targeting the Dragon. Duke chained Solemn Judgment to negate it. The Warrior Returning Alive brought back Yaichi. Glowacki summoned him, Duke activated Torrential Tribute, Glowacki chained Ceasefire, and Duke chained Solemn Judgment! Ceasefire was negated, Glowacki lost his field, and he passed with absolutely nothing out. It was a game-losing turn.

Duke activated Wave-Motion Cannon and Level Limit - Area B. Glowacki set a monster and there was nothing he could do — a turn later he was conceding in the face of Wave-Motion Cannon.

Anthony Duke takes the first duel! Both used the maximum amount of time to side deck.

Glowacki began the second duel with a set monster and nothing else. Duke summoned Mystic Tomato, attacked, and destroyed The Six Samurai - Zanji, which Glowacki had set as a bluff, hoping the Samurai would make it to the next turn. That sure backfired. Duke set one spell or trap card, ended, and Glowacki summoned The Six Samurai - Irou. Irou attacked, Mystic Tomato was destroyed, and Duke special summoned Sangan. Glowacki ended his turn with one set card to his back row.

Dark Mimic LV3 came down for Duke, and Glowacki activated Torrential Tribute. Duke was just flatly out-carding Glowacki now, searching out Card Trooper with Sangan’s effect. He set two more cards to his back row, activated Wave-Motion Cannon, and ended. Glowacki summoned The Six Samurai - Zanji, attacked, and connected for 1800 damage. He had nothing to back Zanji up with though, and next turn Duke ran him over with Card Trooper. Glowacki summoned The Six Samurai - Yaichi, attacked Card Trooper, and destroyed it. Glowacki set two cards to his back row: Mystical Space Typhoon and Twister.

Duke set a monster and ended. He lost Solemn Judgment in his end phase to Mystical Space Typhoon. Glowacki activated Reasoning next turn, Duke called 5, and sure enough Glowacki lost Grandmaster of the Six Samurai, a card he hadn’t seen until now. He summoned The Six Samurai - Kamon, targeted Wave-Motion Cannon with his effect, but lost his field to Torrential Tribute.

Next turn the older Wave-Motion Cannon was destroyed by Twister, leaving Duke to activate Swords of Revealing Light. Glowacki summoned The Six Samurai - Yaichi, and Duke blew him away with Hammer Shot. Glowacki had nothing left in hand but Dark Magician of Chaos.

He drew for his next turn, activated Reinforcement of the Army to search for The Six Samurai - Kamon and summoned him. Another Hammer Shot destroyed him next turn. Glowacki topped Cyber Dragon and passed, his hand dead. Swords of Revealing Light was destroyed. Duke drew, set a second back row card, and ended.

Glowacki drew another dead card, Great Shogun Shien, and passed. He had 7400 life points remaining. Duke passed, his Cannon at 6000 damage. Glowacki topped into Breaker the Magical Warrior next turn, blew away the Cannon, and then attacked into Dimension Wall! He was out of the frying pan but into the fryer. Duke set a monster, set a spell or trap card, then set another. “Go.”

Reasoning was activated and Duke called 5 yet again. This time he missed, and Glowacki special summoned Great Shogun Shien. Glowacki checked his opponent’s graveyard for Mirror Force, found that Duke still had it somewhere, and attacked right into it anyway, losing both of his monsters. He made a mistake, not special summoning Cyber Dragon in main phase 2.

Next turn he paid for it, as Duke flip summoned Mystic Tomato and attacked for 1400 damage. Glowacki special summoned the Cyber Dragon moments later and ran over Tomato; Duke traded it for Dark Mimic LV3. A set Mirror Force finished the turn. Dark Mimic went to defense mode, Glowacki normal summoned The Six Samurai - Irou, and switched Cyber Dragon to defense. What was he doing? Mirror Force was gone. Irou attacked the Mimic but Duke responded with Ceasefire to deal a bit more damage before losing his monster. Glowacki ended, Duke set a spell or trap, and play was back to Glowacki. Duke paid 1000 life points to flip Skill Drain.

Glowacki activated Heavy Storm, but Duke chained Judgment of Anubis! He discarded Smashing Ground, blew away Cyber Dragon, and dished out 2100 damage. Irou then attacked but Duke ended the game with Magic Cylinder!

Anthony Duke takes a commanding 2-0 victory, one match away from Day 2!
