Deck Profile: Jose Arocho
Jason Grabher-Meyer

If you’re looking for a new, devastating, Stein OTK build, Jose Arocho has the decklist you’re looking for. At 16 years of age, he took his first, and so far only, loss in round 5, and the New Jersey native, a member of Team Anarchy, doesn’t seem to be letting that faze him. Arocho is running only 11 monsters, and his build is worthy of note because he’s got an interesting answer to the question that a lot of Cyber-Stein duelists are asking: “Which card to use for life point gain? Nimble Momonga? Poison of the Old Man? Emergency Provisions?”

How about all of the above?

Out of the 40 cards he’s using, almost a quarter of the deck is geared towards life gain. On its own, each life gain card has its own strengths. The Momongas can block attacks while they gain you life points, absorbing the opponent’s offense and stalling your deck. Poison of the Old Man is chainable, and can be used proactively once Stein is drawn into. Emergency Provisions can gain a duelist more total life points than any three of the other cards, but demands big sacrifices and big plays. Run together though, they’re greater than the sum of their parts.

Set your Poisons and you can chain them to activate their effects. Then, you can chain Emergency Provisions to send them all to the graveyard, gaining even more life points. Used together, you can juice a 2200 life point gain from each Poison of the Old Man you play. It’s a combo that has a ton of potential, and it’s paid off in spades all day long for Arocho. “In one game, I Stein’d a guy three times.” Yeesh. I bet his opponent felt that one.

This deck uses a total of six traps as sources of burn damage. Ceasefire, Ring of Destruction, Magic Cylinder and a full playset of Secret Barrel keep the heat on the opponent, burning away life points that might be used for Steins on the other side of the table. Secret Barrel has been particularly popular here today, simply for its chainability and potential to deal such huge amounts of damage. Here it’s used as tech in the mirror, as well as just a way of keeping the opponent vulnerable.

Messenger of Peace, Level Limit — Area B, and Gravity Bind all help to keep the game under control until Arocho is ready to go off with Stein. Once he’s ready, Emergency Provisions gets rid of them.  Not only do they lock down the field and save him from damage, but they turn into life points once Stein is available. A ton of Arocho’s games have been won by dual Cyber-Stein effects. One Cyber End Dragon is bad enough, but two is just ugly.

Cold Wave is pretty awesome too. On a turn when Arocho draws into Cyber-Stein and has the win, he can activate Cold Wave as soon as he hits Main Phase 1 and get an effect similar to Giant Trunade. Once Cold Wave resolves, Arocho’s opponent won’t be able to activate trap cards, Scapegoat, Enemy Controller, or Book of Moon to block attacks that turn, so there’s nothing they can do to stop the Stein-summoned beatstick. If the hit isn’t an OTK, they won’t even be able to use Smashing Ground or Brain Control to take care of the fusion monster.

Youch.

With a 4-1 record this deck has a good chance of making it to the Top 8. More importantly, the technique and strategies demonstrated here are sure to be adopted by other Stein players. Emergency Provisions should become more popular, and Cold Wave in lieu of a third Giant Trunade is nothing short of brilliant.
