Invasion of Chaos Limited: The Chaos Burn
Curtis Schultz

The Invasion of Chaos has begun, and by this time I'm sure you've all been exposed to the forces of Chaos in Constructed play. For another perspective on Invasion of Chaos, one needs to try it in the Limited format.

I will begin my analysis of Invasion of Chaos Limited with a strategy that is close to my heart—the Burn strategy. (Get it? Heart Burn! Well . . . never mind.) The Burn strategy is the well-known method of using card effects to lower your opponent’s life point total. Burn cards have often been included in new Yu-Gi-Oh! sets, and Invasion of Chaos is certainly no exception.

The great thing about the Burn cards in Invasion of Chaos is the variety you have to choose from. You can run with the Anti-Aircraft Flower and offer Insect-type monsters as tributes to dish out your damage, run Anti-Spell and play Tower of Babel and Curse of Darkness, or stall out your opponent and slowly deplete his or her life points turn by turn. You can also go for a more dangerous plan and use Destruction Ring and Thunder Crash to wipe out your own monsters in an effort to punish your opponent’s life points. Given the variation in packs, your options for Burn will be determined by what you open, so it's a good idea to become familiar with the various stratagems of Burn in Invasion of Chaos so that you will readily recognize what you have when you see it.

Let’s look at each strategy in more detail.

Anti-Aircraft Flower

If you draft this card, it's a good idea to get as many Insect-type monsters as you can to go with it, and it's also helpful to obtain the Multiplication of Ants spell card. You can use Multiplication of Ants to change one Insect-type monster into two Insect-type monsters, giving you more fodder for your Anti-Aircraft Flower to fire off.

Skull Mark Ladybug will give you a 1000 life point increase when you tribute it to Anti-Aircraft Flower. Pinch Hopper, especially in multiples, works very well with Anti-Aircraft Flower. After you tribute the Pinch Hopper for the Anti-Aircraft Flower’s effect, you can special summon another Insect-type monster from your hand.

Neobug can work as an offensive monster and can be used as fodder for Anti-Aircraft Flower. Insect Princess may work better for other purposes, but if needed can also be tributed to the Flower.

The obvious problem this strategy will face is the need to protect your monsters long enough to fire them off. As long as you do not play any spell cards, you can use D. D. Borderline to keep either player from having a battle phase. This can buy you the time you need to get the necessary monsters onto the field and then fire them off. Prickle Fairy, a 2000 DEF Plant-type monster, can also help to protect your Insect-type monsters. As long as Prickle Fairy is face-up on your side of the field, your opponent will need to get through it first in order to destroy your Insect-type monsters in battle. Keep in mind that Invasion of Chaos contains monster removal and easily available high-ATK monsters, so this stall strategy might not work for long.

Anti-Spell

Who needs spell cards when your traps can do the work for you? This strategy can be combined with other strategies to disrupt your opponent.

The first anti-spell card up for grabs is the rare Curse of Darkness. Curse of Darkness, once resolved, deals 1000 points of damage to any player that activates a spell card from that point forward. With the minimal amount of spell and trap removal in Invasion of Chaos, this trap can easily become a problem for your opponent. Do keep in mind that the same can be said for you as well.

Next up is Tower of Babel. Once this card has resolved, when a player activates a spell card, a spell counter is placed on the Tower. No player wants to be the one to take the massive shot of damage from placing that fourth and final counter on the Tower. The goal you should have in mind is to be the person to place the third spell counter on Tower of Babel. Once it has reached three counters, you can be mostly assured that no spell cards will be activated from that point forward. Naturally, this means you will not be activating your own spell cards, either. The only real issue you will face from that point forward is a player using Orca Megafortress of Darkness to destroy the Tower, or a sacrificial attack from a Gigantes.

Pain-Stall

Some cards in Invasion of Chaos have effects that activate once during each of your turns, but in order to get the most out of them, you'll need to protect them from destruction. That's where the need for stall comes in.

Let’s start with the monsters we’ll be protecting:

Bowganian – As long as this monster is face-up on your side of the field, it will inflict 600 points of damage to your opponent during each of your standby phases. It's a pretty simple effect, but nasty if you can keep it around long enough. With an initial starting life point total of 4000, that 600 every turn will be felt.

Stealth Bird – If you protect this one long enough, it could effectively end the game in four of your turns. Each time you flip-summon this monster, you will deal 1000 points of damage to your opponent. Then you can use its effect to put it back into face-down defense position, setting it up to deal damage during your next turn.

Balloon Lizard – While it's face-up on your side of the field, you place a counter on it during each of your standby phases. When Balloon Lizard is later destroyed, you will deal 400 points of damage times the number of counters on it to the person who was responsible for destroying it. You can get it killed by attacking a higher ATK attack-position monster if your opponent seems wise to your plan.

Now for the stall and protection:

D. D. Borderline – The ability to prevent your opponent from having a battle phase will be of great benefit to your and great frustration for your opponent. If you are running a burn strategy without need for attacking monsters, this card will do you no harm. The only downside to this effect is the need to have no spell cards in your graveyard. You can combine this card with Recycle to place one spell card in your graveyard back into your deck during your standby phase at the cost of 300 life points. Recycle can help to clear out any spell cards in your graveyard that you had played before drawing your D. D. Borderline.

Stumbling – This card puts a summoned, flip-summoned, or special summoned monster into face-up defense position. This can be used to buy you more time to set up your defenses and can be used to normal summon a monster like Balloon Lizard and shift it into its stronger defense position. You can combine this with Yellow Luster Shield to power up the DEF of your monsters, giving them better odds of surviving battle.

Zero Gravity – If Windstorm of Etaqua is like the Raigeki of position shifts, this would be the Dark Hole of position shifts. This one can take an army of attackers and change it into an army of defenders. Your opponent may get wise to your plans if you use this trick more than once and begin leaving a strong monster in face-up defense position just in case. This can be combined well with Dark Mirror Force, shifting attackers to defense position and having Dark Mirror Force remove them all from play. (Just remember to activate Dark Mirror Force first, then Zero Gravity, so everything resolves properly.)

Compulsory Evacuation Device and “Begone, Knave!” can also be used for disruptive purposes.

D. D. Borderline will provide the most long-term effective stall of the bunch. If you draft Bowganian, Stealth Bird, or Balloon Lizard, it will be to your benefit to try and draft this card as well. You can expect that anyone not also running Burn will probably pass this one up, as it runs counter to the various offensive strategies.

The Wild Cards

The wild cards are cards that can be implemented into other strategies as a way of finishing off the opponent. They can also be included in the previous Burn strategies with good results.

Destruction Ring: This rare card is a mini version of Ring of Destruction. It will only destroy one of your own monsters and deals 1000 damage to both players. This doesn’t seem like much, but when each player begins with only 4000 life points, it can make all the difference. This trap works well as a game ender, dealing the last bit of damage needed to end the duel.

Thunder Crash – Thunder Crash destroys all of your own monsters (a sort of sacrificial Raigeki) but deals 300 points of damage to the opponent for each of your monsters destroyed in this way. This one is also a game ender, mostly because you don't want to make a habit of wiping out your forces for minimal impact on your opponent. The most damage you will do with this card’s effect is 1500, so keep that in mind.

Drillago – Drillago is not entirely like a Burn card, but it is worth mentioning in this discussion due to its ability to attack the opponent directly. The 1600 direct attack it can give you can be an easy game finisher. Drillago’s main enemies are set cards.

Inferno – The most offensive Burn monster by far, the only issue faced by Inferno is its lack of a high ATK. It will be hard to use this card effectively in Draft without a way to increase its ATK, so you might find more use for this one in Constructed with good equip cards. This card’s effect also will not work if it destroys a monster token, so keep that in mind. (Monster tokens are not sent to the graveyard, thus they cannot satisfy the effect of Inferno.)

And last, but most certainly not least . . .

Chaos Emperor Dragon – Envoy of the End – This monster really is the end. If you keep it in hand and are patient enough with it, you can very well end the duel with its effect alone. This one is an immediate draft and should become the basis of your deck once you have it. Mix in a few other sources for burn damage, some stall cards, and the requisite Light and Dark monsters, and you can end the duel in a hurry.

Until next time . . . don’t let those Ojamas get in your way.
