Round 11: Duncan Tang vs. Bjorn Krause
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Germany’s Bjorn Krause and Scotland’s Duncan Tang have both received feature matches this weekend and now, with two rounds remaining in the tournament, they both needed to win out to clinch a spot in the Top 8.

“Having fun?” asked Tang with a smile.

“Yeah,” replied Krause flatly. He gave reason to doubt his reply.

He won the roll and opened with a set Destiny Hero - Disk Commander and Ring of Destruction. He had Destiny Hero - Fear Monger in his hand, which was revealed next turn when Krause used Confiscation: Duncan was holding Cyber Dragon, Elemental Hero Stratos, and two Cyber Dragon. Krause activated Wave-Motion Cannon, set three spell or trap cards and then set a monster.

Tang was up, and Krause activated Mask of Restrict! Tang summoned Card Trooper and used its effect with priority, sending Snatch Steal, Reinforcement of the Army, and another Trooper to his graveyard. He then flip summoned Disk Commander, attacked with Card Trooper, and Book of Moon turned it face down. “Your go,” stated Duncan.

Krause flip summoned his set Stealth Bird, but, when he tried to flip it face down, Tang chained Ring of Destruction to target it! Krause chained Solemn Judgment in turn, and dropped to 3500 life points. Krause was somewhat unhappy — Tang now had a clear backfield, so he should have attacked with the Stealth Bird. He’d made a smart conservative play, but it hadn’t turned out to be the optimal one in the long run. He ended his turn with Messenger of Peace.

Tang drew for his turn, gave a little arm pump, and then turned Disk Commander to defense. He set a monster, boosted Trooper to 1400 ATK and attacked the Stealth Bird to flip it. It was a great move; by keeping Trooper below 1500 ATK it could still attack despite Messenger of Peace. Tang would take some damage as a result of ramming his Trooper into Stealth Bird’s high defense, but he wouldn’t take 1000 damage, and that’s what counted. Next turn, if Krause wanted to burn for 1000 he’d have to leave Stealth Bird in attack position at the end of his turn, and that would result in Card Trooper running it over. It just wasn’t an option.

Krause drew, set his back row card, and passed. Tang flip summoned his set Destiny Hero – Fear Monger, and then activated Call of the Haunted to target Stratos! It would destroy two of Krause’s back row cards if it resolved, but Krause had another Solemn Judgment to stop it!

Tang sent two cards to the graveyard with Card Trooper, still intending to sneak it under Messenger of Peace. He removed Malicious from his graveyard to special summon another in attack, and Tang pressed with Card Trooper. In the damage step he activated Limiter Removal, allowing his Trooper to destroy the Stealth Bird. That freed up Malicious and Fear Monger to attack directly, enough damage for game!

Duncan Tang defeats Bjorn Krause in a narrow duel, overcoming Krause’s control cards with some tricky uses of Card Trooper!

Krause opened the second duel with Confiscation. “Must be nice!” grinned Tang, who revealed his hand of: Call of the Haunted, Fear Monger, Gravekeeper’s Spy, Heavy Storm, and Confiscation. The Heavy Storm was the obvious pick, and Krause discarded it. He set a monster and one spell or trap, and then activated Messenger of Peace to secure his position. “Go.”

When Tang drew Krause was ready with Trap Dustshoot! Tang had drawn into Premature Burial, and Krause debated between returning Spy and Fear Monger to Tang’s deck. He returned the Fear Monger to Tang’s deck and Tang activated Confiscation himself, making Krause flop a hand of Level Limit - Area B and Des Koala. The Level Limit hit the graveyard and Tang set two to his back row, set a monster, and ended.

Stealth Bird flipped to burn him for 1000 damage, and Krause set Des Koala and another back row card. Krause had forgotten to pay for his Messenger of Peace, but after a judge call and an appeal, he was allowed to pay for it anyway. He ended his turn and Tang was up.

He flip summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy and normal summoned another in defense position. He set one more back row card and then attacked the Stealth Bird, pulling a similar trick to the one he had used before. He ended his turn, and reminded Krause to pay for his Messenger of Peace this time. Krause drew, and paid quite promptly.

He set the card he drew, passed to Tang, and then flipped Mask of Restrict in Tang’s draw phase. Tang moved to main phase 1 and flipped his set Destiny Draw, discarding the Destiny Hero – Fear Monger he had drawn this turn. Krause considered his options, before activating Solemn Judgment, his last back-row card. “Goooooood.” Tang was pleased. He sent the Spy to attack Stealth Bird again and ended. Tang had 5000 life points to Krause’s 3400.

Krause paid 300 life points again, and turned Stealth Bird face down. Tang topped into Card Trooper, summoned it, pumped it twice, and rammed the Stealth Bird again. He turned his Spy to defense and ended. Krause paid for Messenger, turned Stealth Bird face down and set another monster.

Tang activated Card Trooper, sent two cards to his graveyard and set a monster. He turned a Spy to attack, sent Card Trooper to attack the Stealth Bird, and then attacked into the monster Krause had just set; it was another Des Koala! Tang took 600 battle damage and ended. “Go.”

Krause activated Wave-Motion Cannon (after paying for Messenger) and turned his Stealth Bird face down. Tang sent two cards to the graveyard for his Trooper, attacked the Stealth Bird yet again, and set his last card. Krause’s Wave-Motion Cannon went to one turn and Krause activated Stealth Bird’s effect: Tang chained Ring of Destruction yet again! Both players took 700 damage, and the duel stood at 2800 to 2300. Krause set another back row card and passed.

Tang pumped Card Trooper to 1900 ATK, and lost Mystical Space Typhoon and Jinzo in doing so. Oof. He turned both Spy and Trooper to defense position, not making any attacks. He ended his turn and immediately hated his decision: “Misplay! I’m so bad at this game!”

Krause considered his options, and after much thought decided to end his turn. If Tang couldn’t win it here and now, he’d eat 3000 damage from Wave-Motion Cannon. Either way, it was almost over.

Tang activated Premature Burial, flipping it from his back row to target Snipe Hunter. Krause took Tang’s graveyard and searched through it, extensively, taking his sweet time.

Tang looked at him from across the table. “You know, if you Solemn that, this is the worst slow roll ever. No one would refuse to Solemn it.”

Krause did. Eventually.

“Okay, I’m gonna play a little faster then, since you’re now out of responses,” Tang flipped Call of the Haunted. “This guy,” he tapped Snipe Hunter. “Now remember, you knew I had that because you used Confiscation.” He discarded Morphing Jar to destroy Wave-Motion Cannon, and hit! He had one last card in his hand, Destiny Draw.

“How much would you pay for a Snipe Hunter that doesn’t miss?” shouted someone from the crowd.

“Lots of money!” shouted Tang with a grin. He debated what to go after with the last card. “This is awkward.” He chose the Messenger, but missed! He ended his turn quickly.

Krause debated paying for his Messenger. “You play so slow. We’ve only got a few minutes left in the round,” remarked Tang. Krause paid for Messenger and then shuffled his hand extensively.

Krause summoned Snipe Hunter himself, and discarded to destroy Tang’s Snipe Hunter. Tang drew and considered his options carefully: he’d drawn Malicious, and he ended swiftly. Krause paid for Messenger again; he was down to 900 life points. Tang had 2000, so if the match did go to time with Krause not scoring any more damage he was in trouble. Still, five minutes remained in the round. Krause turned Snipe Hunter to defense (prompted by an enormous yawn from Tang).

He’d drawn Limiter Removal. He turned Card Trooper to attack mode and ran it at Snipe Hunter, activating Limiter Removal in the damage step to clear Snipe and clear up a space in his row. Tang was digging for Elemental Hero Stratos! It was his last chance, and by blowing away Card Trooper he could draw towards it and clear his field for more Destiny Heroes to feed Stratos’ field-clearing effect.

Tang drew Elemental Hero Stratos. It was on.

Kraus paid another 100 life points after again taking quite a while to do so. He then flip summoned Stealth Bird. “That’s not so good,” noted Tang, taking 1000 damage. “I’d ask you to hurry up, please.” Krause turned Stealth Bird face down and set another monster. Things looked bad for the merry Scot. “I think I screwed up.”

He flip summoned his set Fear Monger, and then summoned Stratos to blow away Messenger. Stratos attacked the Stealth Bird and destroyed it, but Tang had no follow-up, and Krause flipped Morphing Jar; Tang was forced to draw five cards! Krause still had Des Koala set, and he flipped it for game!

A minute and fifteen seconds remained. This match was clearly going to end-of-time procedure.

“I’ll go first,” announced Tang, siding quickly. He’d get one turn of attacks to try and deal more damage than Krause.

Tang drew, took a deep breath, and looked at a hand full of dead cards: Raiza the Storm Monarch, Jinzo, Machine Duplication, Destiny Hero - Malicious, Destiny Hero - Fear Monger, and Limiter Removal. Fear Monger was his only useable card. His only hope seemed to be Jinzo with Limiter for big damage, or Raiza for a lucky swing. A Destiny Draw would be his best bet. He set Limiter, Machine Duplication, and Fear Monger.

Krause was up. He summoned Snipe Hunter, and used its effect with priority to target the monster: Krause rolled a six. “Yes!” Tang gave a hoot, and then immediately apologized. “It was Sangan anyway.” You liar.

Krause pitched Gravity Bind next, and rolled a five, destroying Fear Monger. It alienated virtually every good play Tang had. A pitched Mask of Darkness robbed Tang of Limiter Removal, and Snipe Hunter then attacked for 1500 damage. Tang was drawing to a handful of outs next turn: Destiny Draw, Premature Burial, or Card Trooper seemed like his only paths to a win. Krause activated Level Limit - Area B, set a spell or trap and ended.

Tang drew Metamorphosis, yet another totally dead card. He conceded the duel and offered the handshake.

Bjorn Krause defeats Duncan Tang in one of the most tense, tactically inspired matches I’ve ever seen!
