Metagame Reader Challenge 9: Hearts, Flowers, and Pow!
Julia Hedberg

Valentine’s Day is over for another year. Did you escape in one piece? Whether you’re a veteran or a novice at the game of love, this week’s challenge is going to test your skill with hearts and flowers, not to mention your memory of obscure card illustrations.

The Situation

It is turn 1. Your opponent will go first, and will normal summon
Injection Fairy Lily. Your opponent will do nothing else for the rest of the game except draw, discard during the end phase, and attack with Lily. Lovely Lily’s attack pattern works like this. If you have a face-up monster, the Fairy attacks it before attacking any face-down monsters. If Lily is confronted with multiple face-up monsters, it goes after the monsters in attack position before going after any defense-position monsters. If Lily has multiple attack-position targets, it goes after the one with the lowest total ATK value (not printed, but total). Lily uses its effect when it attacks. Ouch!

Your primary goal? Stay alive as long as you can. The catch? Lily is your valentine (Awwww . . .), so you can’t destroy it, remove it from the field, or prevent it from attacking. All you can do is stay alive as long as possible by giving Lily all the flowers, jewelry, candy, and perfume you can get your hands on. You may only set or activate cards that have these items in their names or illustrations. The entrant who stays alive for the most turns is the winner.

Here’s the fine print you knew was coming. Your opponent’s life points are infinite. Don’t even bother trying to use a card effect to mess around with them. If the Fairy can’t use its effect because its controller can’t pay for it, you lose. You may decide the order of cards in your deck so long as that order stays consistent. For instance, you can decide what you draw for each of your draw phases, but you can’t use a card that says “place X card on the bottom of your deck” and then claim that you drew X off the top. Any time your opponent makes a choice, like giving you cards from an effect, you may make that decision for your opponent. However, you don’t know what your opponent has in his or her deck, so cards like
Cyber Jar (if it had a bouquet in it) are off-limits. If a play could somehow mess you up, don’t do it.

The Usual Details

Please put “Reader Challenge 9: X” in the subject line of your email, where X is the total number of turns you survived. Be sure to pay attention when you’re scoring so that you count correctly.

Begin by stating your opening hand, and then give a step-by-step breakdown of what cards hit the field and when. Be precise and clear—if we can’t understand the sequence of moves, you probably won’t win the challenge.

Don’t forget to include your full name and mailing address. We can’t send you your prize without that information, and I’m sure you don’t want to donate those boosters to us . . . though you can if you really want.

Please enter only once. Sending us additional entries will void all entries you submit.

Entries should be submitted to contest@metagame.com and must be received by Friday, February 25 at 5 pm EST. Good luck!
