I consider myself a very well seasoned duelist, and as such, it takes some serious deck building creativity to impress me. Michael Powers has managed to do it, though, piloting his fascinating new Dimension Fusion combo deck to a 6-0 start here in Houston.

This deck is the brainchild of Powers and his friends Jake Anderson, Brandon Hilder, and Richard Garcia. They came up with the idea for it one day while trying to prepare for a San Antonia regional tournament. They were looking through a box of commons when suddenly, inspiration struck.

The main combo engine revolves around Mass Driver or Cannon Soldier, Dark Magician of Chaos, and Dimension Fusion. The goal of the deck is to set up a loop that starts with the Magician being summoned by Dimension Fusion. When he comes into play, the Magician can bring Dimension Fusion back to the hand. From there, Dark Magician of Chaos is tributed to either Mass Driver or Cannon Soldier to deal some damage to the opponent and remove the Magician from play again. From there, you just repeat until the opponent is dead.

The only problem with the combo is that pulling it off would take far more life points than you start the game with. Never fear—Spell Economics is here! With Spell Economics in play, Dimension Fusion is free and the combo can go off unhindered. When asked about the weaknesses of the deck, Michael admitted that Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer is a huge problem because it stops him from removing the Dark Magician of Chaos from the game with Soul Release. He also said that Solemn Judgment can mess up the combo, but hey, Solemn Judgment can mess up anything.

So far, Michael has powered his way through six tough rounds of competition, emerging unscathed. He faced Zombie, Phoenix, Chaos, and Hybrid decks and took them out like they were nothing. Michael Powers is in an excellent position to make Top 8 here today, and if he does, it will surely change the game as we know it.
