Round 1: William Bardsley vs. Peter Kressin
Jerome McHale

I took a look at William Bardsley’s Macro Cosmos deck before the event, but I didn’t get a chance to see it in action. That’s about to change right now as these two previously unknown players face off in their first-ever Shonen Jump feature match. Both players were understandably nervous as they shuffled up for the game, but they were both determined to win this match to start the day off on the right foot. William won the opening roll and opted to begin game 1.

He started off with a face down monster and a Dimensional Fissure. Peter responded by immediately attacking with a Chainsaw Insect, revealing Spirit Reaper and allowing William to draw a card. William followed up with D.D. Assailant, ramming it into the Insect to draw a card and hitting directly with the Reaper to pitch a card from Peter’s hand. Peter lost End of the World, signifying that he might be playing the Doom Dozer/End of the World deck that Jason featured a while back. William set a spell or trap and Peter did likewise. Breaker the Magical Warrior came down for William destroying Peter’s set Sakuretsu Armor, and both Breaker and the Reaper swung in directly. This time Peter lost a Chaos Sorcerer, probably not the worst thing to lose, given that monsters couldn’t go to the graveyard anyway. Peter activated Graceful Charity discarding two copies of 7 then summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands to fetch another End of the World. He activated it pitching Dark Magician of Chaos to bring down Demise, King of Armageddon, and activated its effect to clear the field. Peter attacked directly, set his last card, and passed.

William wasn’t going to stand for any of this, however, and he activated Reinforcement of the Army to grab Exiled Force. He used it to destroy Demise then set two spells or traps and passed. Peter set a facedown monster and passed back to William who flipped a set Nobleman of Crossout to eliminate all Magical Merchants from the game. He then summoned D.D. Warrior Lady and swung for 1500 before setting another spell or trap and passing. Peter drew and played Snatch Steal to take the Lady and tribute it for Jinzo. William looked very displeased at his set Macro Cosmos and Torrential Tribute, but was hopeful when he then drew into Graceful Charity. Graceful got him three traps however, entirely useless in this situation. He still had six cards to Peter’s one, but none of them could deal with Jinzo. Peter attacked William’s newly set monster revealing A Cat of Ill Omen, the absolute worst possible monster he could have set. William was forced to put a trap on top of his deck ensuring another dead draw. He drew it, set two cards and passed to Peter who simply flipped his Magician of Faith to retrieve Snatch Steal and attacked directly with both monsters for game.

Peter-1 William-0

William had the choice once again for game two, and he once again opted to go first. He started with a set to each zone, and then followed up with Reinforcement of the Army to fetch D.D. Survivor, signaling that he had a Macro Cosmos set. He passed over to Peter who immediately used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy the Cosmos. William opted not to chain, preferring to keep Helios – The Primordial Sun in the deck for the time being. Peter then summoned Manju to fetch End of the World which he played pitching Demise, King of Armageddon to bring out Ruin, Queen of Oblivion. Ruin hit into a Spirit Reaper, and Peter was forced to pass. On his turn, William went all out, activating Dimensional Fissure, summoning D.D. Survivor and playing Snatch Steal to take Ruin. Ruin hit the Manju and Peter then the other two monsters swung in as well. Spirit Reaper stole Nimble Momonga from Peter, then William set a card and passed back. Peter was in serious trouble, and he set all of his remaining cards in the spell or trap zone. Reaper went to defense mode and D.D. Survivor attacked.

The attack was blocked by Mirror Force getting rid of Ruin, but at the end of the turn the Survivor came back. William set a monster and passed back to Peter who did the same. William attacked, hitting Magical Merchant, which got Lightning Vortex for Peter. He played it next turn, eliminating the Reaper, but leaving the dangerous D.D. Survivor to return again at the end of the turn. William simply attacked and passed to Peter who set another monster in defense. It wasn’t enough though as William whipped out Breaker the Magical Warrior to blast Peter’s bluff card and then activated Nobleman of Crossout to take out his freshly set Momonga. Peter checked his life point total and simply said, “That’s game.”

Peter – 1 William - 1

Peter was first to play in game three, and he started strong with Graceful Charity discarding a Manju and a 7. He then summoned another Manju to fetch End of the World, set a spell or trap and passed over to William. William eyed his hand, tempted to play Heavy Storm straight off. He decided instead to set a card to each zone and activated Dimensional Fissure. Tsukuyomi came down next turn for Peter flipping Manju down and up to fetch Demise, King of Armageddon. Peter pulled the trigger, tributing both his monsters to End of the World and paying 2000 to clear the field. Peter hit for 2400, then set two spells or traps and passed his turn back.

Holding back Heavy Storm was about to pay off in a big way for William, who drew Snatch Steal for his turn. He dropped the Storm eliminating Call of the Haunted and Mystical Space Typhoon. He set a D.D. Scout Plane then stole the Demise and returned the 2400 damage in kind. Peter gained 1000 for Snatch Steal, then set a spell or trap and passed over to William. William checked the graveyard looking for Mirror Force and not finding it. He attacked anyways, but Demise was blocked by the fuzzy defenders from Scapegoat! William added another defense monster to his field and passed with three monsters to Peter’s three Sheep tokens. Peter simply passed to William who got rid of the Demise by tributing it for Mobius the Frost Monarch. It turned out be not such a solid move though, as Demise was then removed from play to summon Chaos Sorcerer. The Sorcerer took Mobius out of play, and Peter passed with two Sheep tokens and a Sorcerer to William’s two face down monsters.

William decided that the Sorcerer simply couldn’t stay, and he activated Reinforcement of the Army to fetch Exiled Force. He summoned it and flipped a D.D. Warrior Lady and ordered both monsters to attack the sheep. In Main Phase two, Exiled Force destroyed the Sorcerer. It was back again next turn, thanks to Premature Burial, though, and it was joined by a Chainsaw Insect.

The Insect hit a face down D.D. Scout Plane and let William draw into Graceful Charity while the Lady was removed by Chaos Sorcerer. Peter then passed back to William who activated his Graceful pitching Reinforcement of the Army and Solemn Judgment. He then set every card in his hand, giving him two spells or traps and a monster. Peter considered his attacks and opted to switch the Sorcerer to defense. Insect attacked and in response Mystical Space Typhoon blew away the Premature. Peter was left with a single facedown card after D. D. Assailant removed Chainsaw Insect from play. William set another monster and passed over to Peter who flipped Magician of Faith to retrieve Graceful Charity.

He activated it, and then disaster struck. Peter picked up four cards for Graceful Charity and added them to his hand. Head Judge Simon Choy had no choice but to issue a game loss, giving game 3 and the match to William Bardsley. It was a sad end to an otherwise spectacular match, and William Bardsley takes his first win of the event, 2-1.
