Round 5: Mark “Waffle” Vazquez vs. Paul Lyn
Jason Grabher-Meyer

This was a match between teammates, and a rematch from Shonen Jump Championship Orlando. Both of these undefeated competitors are here today playing for Team Illusion, representing B.R.A.D.’S Sportscards and Collectibles. Almost two years ago, these two duelists faced off at the finals table of Shonen Jump Championship Orlando; Lyn emerged the victor and claimed the title as a result. Now, Waffle would get a chance to even the score in their friendly rivalry.

Lyn opened with Dark Armed Dragon, Allure of Darkness, two Krebons, Torrential Tribute, and Destiny Draw. He activated Allure of Darkness, removed Krebons for its effect, and netted Phoenix Wing Wind Blast and Destiny Hero – Malicious. He discarded Destiny Hero – Malicious for Destiny Draw, but drew into a third Krebons and his second Malicious — rough beat. He summoned Krebons, set a spell or trap, and ended. Waffle fired back with the same, but lost his back row card to Phoenix Wing Wind Blast in his end phase; Lyn discarded his second Malicious for it.

He removed that Malicious next turn to special summon his third from his deck. He was holding Torrential Tribute, another Krebons, Snipe Hunter, and Dark Armed Dragon. He Synchro summoned with Malicious and Krebons to bring out Stardust Dragon; that left him with three Darks in his graveyard. He special summoned the Dark Armed Dragon, shot one of his two copies of Malicious at Waffle’s face-down Sangan, and its effect got him his own Malicious.

“Got game?”

“No, I wish, but I drew that second Malicious. Attack.” Vazquez took 5300 damage from Lyn’s pair of attackers, and dropped to 2700 life points. Lyn set a spell or trap card. “Your go.”

Waffle discarded his Malicious for Destiny Draw next turn, drew two, and summoned Neo-Spacian Grand Mole to attack and bump away Stardust Dragon. Heavy Storm cleared away Lyn’s Torrential Tribute. Waffle removed one Malicious for another in defense position and then set two cards to his back row.

“Crush Card?” Waffle shook his head. Lyn removed one Dark to destroy Waffle’s face-down Destiny Draw, but when he fired off his next one he targeted the Crush Card Virus that Waffle had indeed set. It was chained, Dark Armed Dragon went down, and Lyn lost his Snipe Hunter. He summoned Krebons and attacked for 1200 damage.

Vazquez set a card to each zone, unable to capitalize. Lyn topdecked Heavy Storm, revealed it, and sent Krebons to attack; it smacked into Spirit Reaper. Lyn set a card to his back row and ended.

Neo-Spacian Grand Mole hit the field again, and Lyn didn’t negate its effect; Krebons was returned to his hand. He lost Breaker the Magical Warrior to Crush Card Virus’ third turn, and flipped Heavy Storm to threaten Vazquez’s face-down Emergency Teleport. He chained it, brought out Krebons for some reason, and Lyn summoned his own Krebons. He set Allure of Darkness, his last card, and ended, removing Waffle’s Krebons from play.

Next turn Vazquez normal summoned Krebons, brought out his third Malicious, and Synchro summoned Stardust Dragon! He special summoned Dark Armed Dragon, cleared away Lyn’s Krebons and face-down Allure, and attacked with Dark Armed Dragon and Stardust! Lyn would need Brain Control to win out.

He topdecked Thunder King instead, and it was all over! Vazquez claimed the win.

Vazquez shuffled up. “I think I’m doing good today, because my good friend Gordy let me borrow two Dark Armed Dragons, Crush Card Virus, and a Goyo Guardian.”

“I won’t side deck if you won’t,” declared Lyn. Vazquez looked at him for a moment, and then agreed. Nice. Play began moments later.

Lyn opened with Thunder King Rai-Oh, and set Solemn Judgment. Vazquez activated Heavy Storm to destroy the Solemn, set two cards to his back row, and then set a monster. Lyn summoned Destiny Hero – Diamond Dude next turn and activated his effect with priority: “Destiny Draw!” Nope: Lyn sent Torrential Tribute to the bottom of his deck.

“It would’ve been funny if you’d flipped over Overload Fusion!”

Thunder King attacked into Vazquez’s face-down monster; it was Spirit Reaper, and Lyn moved to main phase 2 to destroy it. A set spell or trap finished his turn. Lyn activated Diamond Dude’s effect next turn, missed again (sending Plaguespreader to his graveyard), and then attacked with Thunder King and Diamond Dude to drop Vazquez to 4700 life points.

Vazquez summoned Krebons next turn, and set a third spell or trap. Lyn activated Diamond Dude’s effect and this time caught a free Heavy Storm for next turn! Diamond Dude and Thunder King each attacked Krebons; Vazquez paid 1600 life points to block the attacks and Lyn set a card to his back row to conclude his turn. Vazquez activated Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, discarding Emergency Teleport, to spin away Lyn’s Thunder King. That let him search his deck for Elemental Hero Stratos with Reinforcement of the Army, and he summoned him to get Destiny Hero – Diamond Dude. He Synchro summoned Goyo Guardian, attacked, and Lyn discarded his own Teleport for his own copy of Phoenix Wing Wind Blast; Goyo Guardian was spun back to the Extra deck!

Lyn activated his free Heavy Storm next turn; Waffle chained Teleport and Lyn chained one too. Each duelist special summoned a copy of Krebons, Waffle’s in defense position and Lyn’s in attack. Lyn activated Diamond Dude’s effect, caught Allure of Darkness, and normal summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh. Vazquez paid to negate the first two attacks that followed, and let his Krebons go when the third attack was announced. In main phase 2 Lyn Synchro summoned Goyo Guardian, giving up his Krebons and Diamond Dude to do so.

Vazquez summoned his own Diamond Dude, activated his effect, and sent Destiny Draw to the graveyard! “That’s not fair!” moaned Lyn, joking. Still, Vazquez would have to live until next turn to get those two free cards. He summoned Dark Armed Dragon, lost it to Thunder King’s effect, and ended his turn by setting a spell or trap card.

Lyn activated the Allure’s effect next turn, paying for it by removing Dark Grepher from his hand. He revealed Breaker the Magical Warrior and Dark Armed Dragon from his hand: enough for Vazquez to scoop it up and concede.

Paul Lyn evens this match to a 1-1 contest! Again, neither duelist opted to side deck.

Vazquez opened the last duel with Allure of Darkness, removing Plaguespreader Zombie. He set a card to his back row and ended, not using his normal summon. Lyn was up, holding Krebons, Dark Armed Dragon, Brain Control, Plaguespreader, and two copies of Solemn Judgment! He summoned Krebons, attacked for 1200 damage, and set both copies of Solemn. “Go ahead.”

Two more back row set cards were Waffle’s only move, and Lyn matched him next turn after attacking with Krebons for another 1200 damage. Vazquez summoned Neo-Spacian Grand Mole, attacked to bump away Krebons, and play was back to Lyn.

Krebons was summoned again, this time falling victim to Vazquez’s Torrential Tribute. He set a fourth spell or trap card, and Vazquez searched his deck for Elemental Hero Stratos with Reinforcement of the Army. He summoned Stratos, searched out Destiny Hero – Malicious from his deck, and activated Heavy Storm! Lyn chained Solemn Judgment!

Vazquez flipped Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, discarded Malicious for its effect, and targeted Lyn’s face-down Wind Blast. It was chained to remove Vazquez’s last face-down spell and trap card from the field, but Malicious and Krebons let him Synchro summon Stardust Dragon: Lyn had to negate the summon with Solemn Judgment.

Vazquez brought out his third Malicious, revealed another Emergency Teleport, and it was over! Lyn immediately offered the handshake, clearly having no problem with losing to his teammate.

Mark Vazquez earns some redemption from his defeat almost two years ago!
