Round 8: Ian Slobodianock vs. Justin Womack
Matt Peddle

Justin Womack is from Wisconsin, and he's won every match he's showed up to thus far, which leaves him at a 6-1 record. His opponent is Ian Slobodianock from New Jersey, and he has almost cracked into the Top 16 in recent tournaments. Both players are gunning for Top 8 now, and both know that wins in this round and round 9 could very easily put them in the Top 16.

Justin won the die roll and opted to go first. He did so by summoning Cyber Phoenix and setting a spell or trap card. Ian opened with Cyber Dragon, successfully attacking the Phoenix and setting a spell or trap. He flipped it, Trap Dustshoot, during Justin's standby phase and chose Cyber Phoenix over Cyber Dragon. Also revealed were a pair of Machine Duplications and Dark World Lightning. Cyber Dragon's bumped heads and Justin set another back row before passing.

Ian set a spell or trap card during his turn and passed right back. Justin did nothing with his turn, and Ian set a monster when play was back to him. He flipped another Trap Dustshoot but there were no monsters in Justin's hand! Justin passed and Ian didn't do anything on his turn either. Justin once again declined to make a move, and Ian set a second monster before ending his turn. Justin played Dark World Lightning on the old face down monster, destroying Card Trooper and discarding Machine Duplication. He did the same thing again, discarding Duplication and destroying Trooper. He summoned Injection Fairy Lily and attacked directly, pumping her ATK to 3400 in the process.

Ian was up now, and he played Brain Control on the Lily. Next he tributed her for Raiza the Storm Monarch, sending a card to the top of Justin's deck. Justin summoned a new Lily, but she was brought down by Mirror Force. He set two spell or traps and passed back to Ian, who summoned Snipe Hunter. Snipe destroyed the new spell or trap card, and Justin picked up his stuff. "Doesn't get much worse than that in a feature match," said Justin with a frown.

Both players smoke-screened their decks and Justin began the second duel. He set a spell or trap card and passed to Ian. Ian opened with Destiny Draw, discarding Destiny Hero - Malicious to draw two new cards. He removed Malicious from the graveyard to special summon another one in defense mode. The Malicious was tributed for Jinzo, and Ian attacked directly. During his second main phase, Ian tributed Jinzo to Metamorphosis and special summoned Dark Blade the Dragon Knight. He set a spell or trap card and Justin was up.

Brain Control flopped for Justin and he took control of the Dark Blade. Justin then played a Jinzo of his own, and, during the damage step, played Limiter Removal. Ian was back up, and he simply passed his turn. On Justin's turn, he played Nobleman of Extermination on Ian's face down spell or trap. Ian chained Call of the Haunted, targeting Jinzo, but Justin played his own Call of the Haunted and targeted his own Jinzo! An Injection Fairy Lily later meant the match was going to game 3.

Ian opened the third game with a set spell or trap card and a set monster. Justin summoned Cyber Dragon and Card Trooper before sending the top three cards of his deck to the graveyard. Trooper attacked through Sangan and Ian searched out Destiny Hero - Malicious. Cyber connected for 2100. Justin set a spell or trap card and passed to Ian. On his turn, Ian summoned Snipe Hunter and used priority on Cyber Dragon. He discarded Destiny Hero - Malicious and hit with the Snipe. A second Malicious was brought to the field and tributed for Metamorphosis to special summon Ryu Senshi. Senshi and Snipe attacked over Trooper, and Ian passed with no backfield.

Justin played Card Trooper on his turn and followed up with Machine Duplication for the next one. He then activated Snatch Steal on Snipe Hunter and discarded to destroy Ryu Senshi, but missed. He missed once more and was now out of in-hand cards. Justin revealed that he had Limiter Removal set though, and attacked for game regardless.

Justin Womack's intense damage-based deck takes Ian Slobodianock out with a series of very aggressive plays.
