“You’d be enraged too if you were that bloated.” – Mystic Swordsman
This week’s article focuses on Booster Draft with Soul of the Duelist. Using the two-pack setup from previous articles, I will examine their contents and make suggestions about what will work best for that player. Articles like this one are also a good excuse for me to buy packs.
Player: Ryan
Pack 1
Ultimate Insect LV1 (rare)
Neo Aqua Madoor
Armed Dragon LV3
Unshaven Angler
Ultimate Baseball Kid
Abyssal Designator
Two-Man Cell Battle
Pack 2
Ectoplasmer (super rare)
Nobleman-Eater Bug
Howling Insect
Malice Doll of Demise
The Trojan Horse
Ritual Weapon
Level Up!
Gorgon’s Eye
Cemetary Bomb
Ryan opened the rare cards Ectoplasmer and Ultimate Insect LV1. Ultimate Insect LV1 is not going to be of much use, so Ryan should focus on what he can do with Ectoplasmer. Looking over the available cards, Malice Doll of Demise stands out as the winner. Its effect is designed to work well with Ectoplasmer, turn after turn.
Neo Aqua Madoor is another option. Its high 3000 DEF will certainly be an issue for your opponent. Not much in this set can get through its defense, so your opponent will need to have cards like Hade-Hane, Nobleman-Eater Bug, or possibly Enraged Muka Muka to combat it effectively.
If Ryan keeps Malice Doll of Demise, he should focus on obtaining cards that will maintain monster presence on the field. Normal monsters like Skull Dog Marron, along with Dark Factory of Mass Production, will help.
A word of advice¾Ritual Weapon is a dunce card in Sealed Pack, as there are no ritual monsters in Soul of the Duelist. Pass it along to the next unfortunate player. Chances are nobody else will take it, either.
Player: J.B.
Both of J.B.’s rare cards are quite useful. Penumbral Soldier Lady is a strong monster in battle. The lack of Light monsters in Soul of the Duelist may make it difficult to activate its effect, however, so don’t expect to increase its ATK. Even if you do activate it, the effect won’t do much good against Neo Aqua Madoor or a rampaging Enraged Muka Muka, so keep that in mind.
Hammer Shot is a good old monster removal card. The hitch to Hammer Shot is that it does not care whose monster it hits, so if your monster happens to be the one with the highest ATK, using Hammer Shot would not be a good idea. Try to save this one for a moment when you really need it to bail yourself out of trouble.
Red-Eyes B. Chick has little use in Sealed Pack, since there’s no Red-Eyes B. Dragon. It’s probably best used as tribute fodder for Masked Dragon. You will want to use tribute mechanics like this when running the higher level monsters in Soul of the Duelist.
J.B. should stick with Penumbral Soldier Lady and Hammer Shot. From there, his options are quite open, but good tribute mechanics will help.
Player: Jeb
Jeb’s rares are rather unfortunate. Master of Oz is completely unplayable in Sealed Pack, and Enervating Mist will be of little use. Jeb needs to focus on his other choices.
Enraged Muka Muka stands out. It is deceptive in its strength, with a printed ATK of only 1200. Its true strength lies in its effect, which can easily power Enraged Muka Muka to punishing levels. With five cards in hand, Enraged Muka Muka will be strong enough to take on any monster in the set.
With Enraged Muka Muka in mind, its time for Jeb to select the second card. Choosing a card that supports Enraged Muka Muka will work best. Dark Mimic LV1 and Malice Doll of Demise stand out as the top picks.
Dark Mimic LV1 adds drawing power to Jeb’s deck, and will replace itself with a card when flipped¾something that is likely to occur in Sealed Pack. Malice Doll of Demise is the highest ATK monster in Jeb’s pack, making it best able to stand up in a battle.
Strong defensive monsters like Skull Dog Marron will be useful, along with cards like Dark Factory of Mass Production (with normal monsters to keep the hand count up) and Taunt, which can be used to focus your opponent’s attacks onto the Enraged Muka Muka.
Jeb does have alternatives. He has the nasty Nobleman-Eater Bug. In Constructed, people pass this up because of its tribute requirement, but in Sealed Pack, this monster takes on new meaning. It is one of the best forms of monster removal in the entire set. In the event that Jeb’s Enraged Muka Muka finds itself up against Neo Aqua Madoor, it’ll need some support to keep the battle moving.
Player: Kaitlin
Good fortune shone upon Kaitlin and her packs. Not only did she receive an ultra rare card in her packs, she also received the rare that coincides with it. Given the inherent strengths of these two cards and how well they function together, it is understandable that she would draft them, passing the remaining cards without much thought.
So instead of focusing on the first pick, we’ll look at where Kaitlin will go afterwards. Armed Dragon LV3, Level Up!, and The Graveyard in the Fourth Dimension are good choices. Each functions to support the Armed Dragon LV5 and Armed Dragon LV7 by bringing them into play faster and returning them to the deck if things go wrong.
She may want to use Gorgon’s Eyes, as well. They will help to protect her during her offensive strikes. She wouldn’t want Nobleman-Eater Bug or Hade-Hane ruining her fun.
