Bode went undefeated in Day 1 of Shonen Jump Atlanta, and was now on the bubble for Day 2 here in San Francisco. Chock was also fighting for entry to the Top 8, competing with his surprisingly successful Burn deck.
Chock opened with a set card to each zone, and Bode fired back with one set monster and two set spells or traps. Chock set another spell or trap, Bode set another monster, Chock set another monster, and play passed to Bode.
He did nothing and ended his turn. Chock flip summoned Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive, drew for its effect, activated Wave-Motion Cannon, and passed. Bode flip summoned D. D. Assailant, attacked Dekoichi, and Chock flipped Gravity Bind, but Bode had no response.
He passed his turn and Chock turned Dekoichi to defense position before setting a fourth card to his spell and trap zone. Chock passed, Bode flip summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, then brought out another in attack position. He tried to attack with it, but Chock gestured to Gravity Bind—Bode had gone into Messenger of Peace mode. He set another spell or trap and passed.
The Cannon was at two turns, and Chock opted not to launch it. He set a fifth card to his spell and trap zone and ended. Bode drew, had six cards in hand, and passed. The Cannon got a third turn and Chock passed. Bode summoned Mystic Swordsman LV2, attacked Chock’s face down monster with it, and didn’t flinch when he saw Sangan hit the graveyard. Chock grabbed Cannon Soldier from his deck. Dust Tornado destroyed the Wave-Motion Cannon, Bode set a card with its effect, and play moved to Chock yet again.
Chock played another Cannon, summoned Spirit Reaper, and Bode attacked it with Mystic Swordsman LV2: a small price to pay for another line of defense. Chock flipped Just Desserts, Bode went down to 6000 life points, and Chock flipped Secret Barrel for 2600 life points, bringing Bode down to 3400. Chock then tributed Bode’s D. D. Assailant and Mystic Swordsman LV2 for Lava Golem, activated Swords of Revealing Light, and ended.
Bode hit the Cannon with Dust Tornado, summoned Exiled Force and used its effect to destroy the Lava Golem, and passed. Chock ended the game a turn later with Cannon Soldier and Stealth Bird.
Brendan Chock wins the first duel, burning his way to a win after completely controlling the game!
Bode opened the second duel, doing so with an immediate set to each zone. Chock activated Wave-Motion Cannon, set a card to each zone and passed. Bode used Dust Tornado his face down monster to reveal Ojama Trio. He then flip summoned Don Zaloog, summoned Mystic Swordsman LV2, attacked with both, and cost Chock a Stealth Bird. Chock summoned Sangan, sent it to smash Mystic Swordsman LV2, and next turn was beaten on by D. D. Warrior Lady. It removed the Swordsman from play, and Don again swung directly.
Chock was down to nothing but the Cannon. He drew Exiled Force, summoned it, tributed it to destroy Don Zaloog, and a turn later was beaten by Premature Burial and Call of the Haunted. This game took all of ninety seconds.
Chock began game two with a set to each of his zones. Bode summoned Breaker, broke Chock’s set Sakuretsu Armor, and attacked into Stealth Bird. Smashing Ground finished the bird off, but a turn later Chock had locked the field. He set one card and activated Level Limit – Area B. He set a monster and passed.
Bode played Reinforcement to fetch Mystic Swordsman LV2, and attacked the set monster, revealing Spirit Reaper. It was destroyed, and Chock had to do something big. He tributed both of Bode’s monsters for Lava Golem, activated two Wave-Motion Cannons, and passed. He had no cards left.
Bode summoned Spirit Reaper and poked him. He passed, and Chock drew. The Cannons were at one turn each. He set his draw, ended, and Bode started evaluating his options: he didn’t really have any. He sent Spirit Reaper to attack again and ended.
Chock then launched both of the Cannons, leaving Bode at 1900. He set one card, passed to Bode, and let Bode pay for the Lava Golem, going down to 900. He then flipped Secret Barrel, and that was the game!
Brendan Chock wins his eighth victory of the day, locking his place in the Top 8! The current Advanced format gets its first Burn deck in the Top 8 of a Shonen Jump Championship!
