Round 10: Billy Postlethwait vs. Eugene Harvey
Ryan O'Connor

This match sees two of the most consistent players in the game playing for Day 2. Billy is fresh off his win at $10K Charlotte, where he posted an incredible 14-0 record in his quest for the trophy. Eugene is a seasoned CCG veteran and has a PC Top 8 to his name. The players sat down and started talking about their lifetime record against each other in various games, bringing up the fact that Eugene had a definite lead. Eugene won the flip and chose evens, hoping to keep a hold on his lead in their ongoing rivalry.

The game began with no action from Billy, while Eugene had Ted Kord ◊ Blue Beetle. Eugene discarded a Sue Dibny to go get Booster Gold, who then joined his team on turn 2. Billy answered with Talia, Beloved Betrayer. Eugene stunned Talia with Booster Gold and then exhausted Ted Kord to play Removed from Continuity, clearly hoping to get rid of the character Billy needed to team-up Checkmate with Villains United.

Turn 3 saw Billy search up an Elimination Protocol ◊ OMAC Robot with Brother I Satellite and reveal it to recruit Ahmed Samsarra in the visible area. Harvey exhausted Booster Gold to play UN General Assembly, searching out Kendra Saunders ◊ Hawkgirl. After equipping Kendra with Nth Metal, he flipped over a World’s Greatest Heroes, teaming-up and drawing a card. Billy sent Ahmed into Booster Gold for an uncontested stun, and Eugene chose to pass on attacks, instead exhausting Kendra to search out Katar Hol ◊ Hawkman, Thanagarian Enforcer with a second copy of UN General Assembly.

Turn 4 began with Eugene discarding a High-Tech Flare Gun to search out another Nth Metal with Ted Kord. He then recruited Katar and played Nth Metals on both him and Booster Gold. Billy answered with the Elimination Protocol he had searched out the previous turn. Harvey sent Kendra into the OMAC—earning a mutual stun—and then sent Katar after Ahmed. Billy played two copies of Knightmare Scenario, which were answered with Magnificent Seven. Ahmed searched out Checkmate Safe House, which Billy then activated, but Eugene played Hero’s Welcome to find two more Katar Hols. Billy matched Eugene power-up for power-up, forcing a bounce. Eugene, needing to stun Ahmed, sent in Booster Gold as a 6 ATK / 4 DEF but forgot that Ahmed was still a 7 DEF from the safe house. This caused only Booster Gold to be stunned and was probably the turning point of the entire game.

Going into turn 5 with the score 42-41 in his favor, Billy played a Talia, Daughter of Madness. Eugene popped a Kooey Kooey Kooey for John Henry Irons ◊ Steel, Steel-Drivin’ Man, bringing an Nth Metal back and attaching it to Steel. Spending the final card in his hand, he used Ted Kord to find his fourth Nth Metal, which found a home on Ted. This gave Eugene a board of four characters and four Nth Metals, but he was still hurting from the unneeded loss of Booster Gold the previous turn.

Billy went into the think tank and finally decided on an attack of Elimination Protocol against Katar, using Brother Eye to take down the Thanagarian Enforcer. The threat of Steel was forcing Billy to be excessively cautious, but he finally settled on activating Ahmed to find a Brother I Satellite, then discarded Dr. Psycho, Mental Giant to search out a Huntress, Reluctant Queen (and brought Psycho into play with Talia’s ability). Talia went after Ted Kord, stunning him and bringing Eugene to 27. Kendra stunned Ahmed, and Steel stunned Talia, forcing Billy to keep Ahmed during the recovery phase—but not before KO’ing Katar with a Systematic Torture by exhausting Dr. Psycho.

The game was close going into turn 6, with Billy holding onto a 1-point lead. Eugene searched up Amulet of Nabu before his recruit step, discarding and then getting back Mr. Mxyzptlk, Troublesome Trickster. He then recruited another Katar Hol and equipped it with the Amulet. Billy played Huntress, then set up with everyone in the back row, sandwiching Dr. Psycho between Ahmed and Huntress. Steel attacked into Ahmed, who KO’d the used Systematic Torture to find Leslie Thompkins’s Clinic. Ahmed stunned and Billy was unable to reinforce, taking him to 19. Eugene declared Katar into Huntress, but before the attack was legal, a Multiverse Power Battery on Katar KO’d the Amulet and caused another brickwall. Steel went into Dr. Psycho, who stunned Ted Kord with his vengeance ability, leaving Billy at 11. An attack from Huntress on Steel brought Eugene to 7. Billy used the Clinic on Dr. Psycho, keeping his character count up going into the next turn. A Sasha Bordeaux, Autonomous Prototype the following turn caused Eugene to scoop, earning Billy the right to play in Day 2—and bringing him one step closer to evening up his lifetime match record against Eugene.
