Round 9: Hans Hoh vs. Sam Roads
Tim Willoughby

Hans led off with Joystick, who held some Dual Sidearms, compared with Micro-Chip, who suddenly seemed rather outclassed. Hans got to attack for four, while all Chip could manage was a whimper. Under pressure after just the first turn, Roads went for a discarded Dagger, Child of Light in order to fetch himself a Midnight Sons. He then played Shimmer, who could potentially be a powerful stall character as long as Hans didn't choose to empty his hand by going off curve, rather than his typical method of using powerful equipment. An Ape X fetched a Chopping Block for herself, and Hans passed. Sam clearly wasn't keen to flip his Midnight Sons early, and only exhausted a single character with Shimmer, which allowed Joystick to again put the hurt on the Englishman.

For turn three, there was a third character with an equipment from Hans, this time Lady Lark, who with Dual Sidearms was a beefy 9/4 3-drop. Sam, meanwhile, seemed to prefer his characters rather leaner. He flipped Midnight Sons number one to team up with Gotham Knights, and flipped down his Wild Ride with Micro-Chip, who was quickly replaced with a second copy. Midnight Sons number two. Alfred Pennyworth was the second resource point, and a Midnight Sons to team up with Fantastic Four allowed for a Cosmic Radiation, readying Alfred, and allowing him to fetch another Wild Ride.

This Wild Ride got played in response to the very first attack declaration of Hoh, to fetch Mikado and Mosha, which took down an increasingly concerningly large Joystick. Another Wild Ride came when Lady Lark attacked Shimmer, to fetch another Mikado and Mosha, which dealt with Ape X. Shimmer, with her War Wagon took down Joystick, before being stunned. The net result of the turn: Sam had lost very little, while Hans was down a character and on his own initiative.

With the initiative, Sam played Invisible Woman, the Invisible Girl, and then used her to Bat-Signal for Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards. Reed got a Utility Belt, and Alfred came out once more before Sam passed the turn. For Hans it was simply Golden Archer, who looked potent with Hans holding only a single card. Midnight Sons teamed up Fearsom Five, and Shimmer effectively ended the turn, but for Hans playing Answer the Call to find Whizzer.

The speedster was the very first recruit for Hans, and he gained a Thunder Jet. This allowed for a truly unfair amount of exhausting for Sam's characters and readying for his own. Sam decided not to wait for the readying and exhausting to come from Hans, and exhausted Invisible Woman to Bat-Signal for Dagger, while Alfred fetched A Child Named Valeria and came right back down. Dagger activated to return to hand, which was in turn responded to with Press the Attack to ready Alfred. Alfred found a Catcher's Mitt for Invisible Woman, and played his Dagger again. Things looked pretty bad for Hans, who ostensibly was unable to do any damage for the turn. Other Earth appeared to be a place where Catcher's Mitt is not very good though, and Hans attacked for a frankly absurd amount of breakthrough to seal up his win.

Hans Hoh is now undefeated in round nine and a lock for the Top 8, along with his teammate Andre Muller.
