Five hardy Quebecois traveled between seventeen and twenty hours to get to Gen Con. They drove down together to brave the PC. I introduce you to Team AttaQC, the newest team to hit the scene. They’re all francophone, all the time.
Here’s their member roster:
Christian “Cri Cri” Sarrah-Bournet, Quebec City
Matthieu “Broche” Brochu, Quebec City
Maximillian “Max” Bouchard, Saguenay
Guillaume “La Quille” Potvin, Quebec City (For those who don't speak French, a quille is a bowling pin.)
Benoit “Mascot” Chaurrette, Montreal (He’s an honorary member of the team.)
You might already have heard of the first four from their membership in a well-respected team from the Lord of the Rings game. Brochu was World Champion in 2002, and his team won around $35,000 that year. But the game died, and they decided to play Vs. System instead. This is their second PC, and they’re excited, because they’ve brought their Meat Grinder deck with them.
The Meat Grinder is a GLEE rush deck, so named for the butchery and carnage it causes. Using Ole and Shock Troops, the deck churns out small drop after small drop, each taking down the big boys for maximum gore. Its secret weapon is Salakk, who Team AttaQC calls, “Le Concombre Masque” (the Masked Cucumber). As of round 5, things were looking sharp for the team, with most of them sporting 4-1 or 3-2 records.
They’ve been playing since last Gen Con Indy, and they were excited about this PC because they like Modern Age a lot. Plus, they really like The Avengers because it’s fun to draft—and they claim it’s easier to draft than Green Lantern. Unfortunately, they got their box on Monday, so they’ve only had a few practice drafts. Nonetheless, they feel ready and say that they’ll draft more tonight if they perform well enough to hit Day 2.
The team had originally planned to play Anti-Matter, but they found that GLEE was the only deck that was diverse enough to win out. The Meat Grinder’s best matchup is against any curve deck, but it fares the worst against Anti-Matter Control. Luckily, they haven’t run into much of that. Team AttaQC’s deck doesn’t run any 4-drops and sports only one 5-drop. It capitalizes on Willworld, Prison Planet, and Speedy to rip into GLEE. Another thing that makes the team a little different from many rush players is that they always take the even initiative.
And so, with a hello to Max’s “maman” and a promise of a “poutine” for each one if any of them makes it to Top 8, we’ll be following Team AttaQC. Watch as the only team from Quebec tries to take its place on top of the Vs. System podium!
