Everyone showed up with coffee in hand this early Sunday morning in Tokyo. The Top 8 features two players who have already made a name for themselves in Japanese Vs. System: Rei Hashimoto, a previous $10K finalist; and Kunihiko Kishishita, the winner of the first $10K Tokyo.
Altogether, there are three Squadron decks; one X-Faces deck; one Hellfire Club deck; and three X-Mental decks, including Kunihiko’s interesting blend of Energy and Mental cards that he hopes to pilot to a second $10K victory. The Mental decks are joined by a lone Hellfire Club deck played by Rei Hashimoto, splitting the Top 8 down the middle between aggressive decks and control decks.
Will the aggressive decks dominate today? Or will the slower, more methodical control decks finally earn a trophy in Marvel Modern Age? Each player is looking to take home the trophy, but this format has proven to be unforgiving, punishing even the slightest lapse in judgment with a game loss; only the most consistent players will have a chance.
