Round 16: Willian Postlethwait vs. Eugene Harvey
Mike Rosenberg

William Postlethwait is a Magic: The Gathering player. His current major accomplishment is a fourth place finish at this year’s Magic U.S. National Championships. He is playing against Eugene Harvey, another Magic player and a former U.S. National champion. He has also made the Top 8 at multiple Pro Tours.

William won the coin toss and decided to take the odd initiative. Eugene kept his opening hand, but William decided to mulligan. Neither player had a character on turn 1, but Eugene recruited Beetle on turn 2 and dealt 2 damage.

William recruited Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on turn 3, while Eugene recruited Rhino. Spider-Man attacked Rhino, and both characters got stunned.

Eugene paid 4 endurance to keep Rhino alive on turn 4, and then recruited Kraven the Hunter. Beetle was placed behind Kraven in the support row, and Rhino was placed in the front row. William recruited Sentinel Mark V, which was placed behind Spider-Man, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Eugene declared an attack on the 3-drop Spider-Man with Kraven the Hunter, and William responded by using Ace Reporter to look at the top four cards of Eugene’s deck. Neither player used any power-ups, and Spider-Man got stunned. Rhino and Beetle were used to team attack Sentinel Mark V, stunning the sentinel and Rhino in the attack. William recovered Sentinel Mark V for the turn.

William recruited Human Torch, Friendly Rival, which was placed in front of Sentinel Mark V. Eugene continued to pay for Rhino’s cost and also recruited Daredevil. He moved Rhino and Kraven to the back row behind Daredevil and Beetle. William declared an attack on Daredevil with Human Torch and played Grounded to reduce Daredevil’s ATK to 8. However, Eugene responded with Hired Goons, which boosted Daredevil back up to 9 ATK. Both characters were stunned. Sentinel Mark V swung at Kraven the Hunter, who was reinforced by Rhino. Eugene made no attack and recovered Daredevil, KO’ing Kraven. Eugene was ahead of William in endurance, 27 to 26.

Eugene paid for Rhino’s cost once more on turn 6, reducing his endurance total to 23. He recruited Vulture (revealing Hammerhead), Hammerhead, and Electro. Eugene flipped Lion’s Den and spent his last resource point to increase Rhino’s ATK to 11 for the turn. All of Eugene’s characters were moved to the front row. William recruited Iceman, Cool Customer, which he placed behind Human Torch. Sentinel Mark V was left unprotected in the support row. Eugene began his attack step by declaring an attack on Human Torch with Daredevil. Daredevil’s effect prevented him from being stunned, while Human Torch was stunned, bringing William down to 21. To William’s shock, Eugene flipped another Hired Goons, increasing Eugene’s recruited army’s ATK by 2 points each for the turn. Vulture and Electro were used to team-attack Sentinel Mark V, stunning Mark V and Electro. Eugene then revealed the Surrounded he would play when attacking Iceman, Cool Customer. William immediately scooped and offered a handshake.

Result: Harvey defeats Postlethwait
