Round 2: Dan O'Mahoney-Schwartz vs. Steve O'Mahoney-Schwartz
Toby Wachter

The famous OMS brothers were two of the most feared TCG players back in the day, although they haven't been as active in competitive tournaments the last few years. They've made the trip out to Indianapolis this weekend and ended up paired against each other in the second round. They both won their first match, so only one brother will remain undefeated after this round.

Matt Hyra saw the match and the decks being played and couldn't restrain himself. "This should be called BROTHERhood versus BROTHERhood!"

Game 1

Both players had Toad on turn 2, and Steve had Mystique on turn 3, while Dan had Quicksilver. Mystique attacked Quicksilver and took a power-up. Dan flipped over Lost City and added his own bigger power-up to the chain, causing Mystique to become stunned. Steve kept on the offensive regardless, running his Toad into Dan's. This bounced Steve's copy, and Dan's was stunned. Dan used his attack to swing with Quicksilver, causing 3 points of endurance loss. Both players had Sabretooth on turn 4, keeping the board at about even, with the major exception of Dan's Lost City. Steve flipped over Avalon Space Station, and Dan sent Sabretooth after Sabretooth. Both were stunned, although Steve took the breakthrough as well. Quicksilver attacked Mystique, and Dan flipped over his own Avalon Space Station and activated it. Steve added Have a Blast! to the chain, but Dan simply flipped over a second Lost City. Dan revealed his own Lost City and had a power-up to go along with it. However, Dan continued to have the answers, using Overload to stun Mystique and ready Quicksilver. Both of Steve's characters were stunned, clearing the way for Dan's Quicksilver and Toad to get through directly.

Steve played Quicksilver, Speed Demon on turn five, and Dan had Magneto. Steve's Quicksilver attacked Toad, and he bounced back. Sabretooths now butted heads, and Dan's was powered-up before Acrobatic Dodge was played. Steve added Savage Beatdown to the chain, and both were stunned. Steve now discarded Mystique and readied Quicksilver, sending him after his 3-drop counterpart. Dan activated Quicksilver's ability to cause some endurance loss, but then he was stunned. Dan sent Magneto after Steve's Quicksilver and used Savage Beatdown, so Steve used a power-up. On turn 6, Dan rolled his eyes a bit—all he could muster was Quicksilver, Speed Demon. Steve played Mystique, Shape-Changing Assassin, and Sabretooth attacked into her, taking a power-up. Steve was at 3 and played Acrobatic Dodge, hoping to stay alive. Dan had another power-up to add, and that was enough to win the game.

Steve 0, Dan 1

Game 2

Dan opened with Toad, attacking for 2. Both players had Mystique on turn 3, and Steve's attacked Dan's to cause both to become stunned. Dan played Blob, and Steve played Sabretooth. Dan's Mystique and Toad team attacked Sabertooth, and Steve flipped over Lost City, then powered-up. Dan added Have a Blast! to the chain, looking to get rid of Lost City before the power-up occurred. Steve responded to this with Avalon Space Station and added another power-up to the chain.

Dan: "I'm just gonna lose this one I think."

He added a Toad power-up to the chain and had his own Lost City and Space Station. The end result of all this was that Steve's Sabretooth and Dan's Mystique were stunned. Dan’s Blob attacked Mystique, causing Steve to have two stunned characters (Mystique was KO'd during recovery). Both players had Quicksilver, Speed Demon on turn 5, and Steve had the initiative. Quicksilver stunned two characters, thanks in part to Savage Beatdown providing the assist. A Sabretooth attack on Toad brought Dan down to 14, although Dan was doing his best to slow down Steve, using Have a Blast! to take down Avalon Space Station. Dan had both locations in play, although he was at a much lower endurance total. On turn 6, Dan played Sabretooth, Victor Creed, and told his brother to show him Lost City, and he'd concede. He had one, and it was off to game 3.

Steve 1, Dan 1

Game 3

Steve had a second turn Toad, and attacked for 2. Dan had no characters on turn 3 as he cried, "I got greedy!" He had shipped back a hand that contained a 3-drop and was now being punished for it. Meanwhile, Steve was having no trouble, playing Quicksilver on turn 3, and Sabretooth, Feral Rage on turn 4. On turn 4, Steve asked, "Do you have something?"

"Yeah. Toad," was the reply. On turn 5, Dan tried to mount some offense with Quicksilver and Lost City, but Steve used Have a Blast! Dan noted that he messed up by not playing the Lost City in his hand to have as insurance, but both agreed that he wouldn't have won anyway.

Steve 2, Dan 1
