Oooh! I've been waiting for this match all day. Ryan Jones is commonly known as the pretty boy of the Vs. System circuit, and not too bad a player in his own right. His opponent, Matt Tatar, is a retired foot model who came to the tournament with a cane to support a leg injury he had recently suffered. When asked how he sustained the injury, he managed a haunted, hollow-sounding, "A foot-modeling accident. I don't want to talk about it."
"I thought you were taller than me," Tatar kidded the elegant Jones. "It's my bad posture," Jones quipped back. "After all, I'm not the model."
Jonesie began the game with a turn-1
Electric Eve, which Tatar matched with a
Rem-Ram. He whiffed and passed the attack to Jones. The characters battled and the players moved on to turn 2. On the second turn, Tatar said let there be
Chrome, and it was good. It wasn't as good as Jones's
Thunder Jet-wielding
Joystick. Matt sent his Rem-Ram into Jones's Eve, who evaded out of the way when Tatar powered-up. Chrome took down the Joystick, and the players moved on to the next turn.
Jones began filling in the later parts of his curve by using
Enemy of My Enemy to fetch a
Firestar, Hellion, which he put into his row. He then recruited a Lady Lark and passed to Matt. Matt continued to build his Acolyte army by recruiting a
Kleinstock Brothers. Sadly, he had to move to his formation step with 2 resource points unused, which was probably going to be devastating due to Jones's good draw. Jones's first attack of the turn was Joystick into Rem-Ram. With a little help from
The Acolytes, Tatar was able to stun Joystick back. Next, Jones sent his Lady Lark into Tatar's Kleinstocks. Matt had the extra Kleinstocks in the resource row, though, and managed a mutual stun. The turn that had looked so bad for Matt early on seemed to be looking up for him. Jones's last attack was to send
Electric Eve into Tatar's remaining Chrome. They traded, and the players moved on to the recovery phase. Matt kept his Kleinstock Brothers, and Jones kept his Lady Lark. The turn ended with endurance totals 38–35.
The next turn brought an impressive little army into play for Tatar. He recruited the on-curve
Spoor, as well as the incredibly discounted
Amelia Voght. Jones thought for a very long time about his next play. "You're playing my last three Draft decks from the last PC," Matt joked with Ryan while he was deciding on his play. Ultimately, he decided to use
Enemy of My Enemy (again) to get a
Golden Archer from his deck. He then brought out an archer of a different variety in
Hawkeye, Clinton Barton. Tatar began his attacks by sending in his Kleinstocks at Jones's Lady Lark. He revealed the Kleinstocks he'd shown earlier to make him big enough to stun. This forced Jones to activate his Hawkeye to stun the little beater. Amelia then attacked Lady Lark and, with a little help from
Planet X, managed to take the bigger character down. Tatar rounded out his attacks by sending Spoor in and using his ability, as well as a
Flying Kick, to force through some extra damage. Jones had a
Panacea Potion to keep both his characters alive during recovery. Tatar was forced down to having only a Spoor and, despite being ahead 28–22, was now on the ropes.
While drawing for the turn, Matt yelped a little as Jones accidentally kicked him under the table. "Sorry, man, I wouldn't want to damage your feet," Jones smirked. "I just so owned, didn't I?" Matt laughed. Jones began the recruits by playing a Firestar from his row and choosing not to replace. Tatar matched this with
Sabretooth, Savage Killer. Jones was in luck, as he had the initiative on what was likely to be the final turn of the game. His Hawkeye shot across to deal with Spoor by virtue of a
Flying Kick, and things were looking grim for Matt. Jones then attacked with his Firestar at Matt's Sabretooth and chose to KO her to cause the extra endurance loss. That left Matt at exactly 8 endurance, facing down a Lady Lark with a Panacea Potion counter. Faced with the inevitable, Tatar conceded.
Ryan Jones wins!
