The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Matt Oldaker vs. Alec Ruden
Anand Khare

Matt’s quite tired after a long weekend of Vs. System, and Alec’s almost too sick to play. The players therefore agreed to play a single game to decide the winner of the match. Matt won the coin flip and elected to take the even initiatives. Alec mulliganed his opener, and Matt followed suit.

Alec had no play whatsoever on the first turn, while Matt recruited Dagger, Child of Light. Alec played two copies of Surprise Attack, and Matt got in for a point. Matt had the initiative on the second turn, and he hit his Robot Sentry. Alec played Wild Ride to search out Micro-Chip, and then equipped it with Advanced Hardware. In response, Matt used Marvel Team-Up to team-up, and then exhausted Micro-Chip with Robot Sentry. The players moved on to the next turn.

Alec was up, and he played Enemy of My Enemy for Black Panther, which he recruited. The Panther picked up a Flamethrower, and Alec passed with Micro-Chip in the support row. Matt flipped Midnight Sons naming Gotham Knights, and exhausted Dagger to Bat-Signal for Alfred Pennyworth, Faithful Friend. Matt recruited the 1-drop and used his remaining resource points for a second Robot Sentry. He set up with Alfred protecting a Sentry, and had Dagger and the other Sentry flanking the protected one in the support row. In combat, Alec declared Micro-Chip on the unprotected Sentry. Matt attempted to exhaust it with Sentry; in response, Alec burned him for 3. Alec played Flying Kick on his Panther and smashed the protected Sentry for 12. In recovery, Mikado and Mosha stunned Alfred. A Sentry was lost in recovery, and Alec led 48-24.

Turn 4 was Matt’s initiative, and he again exhausted Dagger to Bat-Signal, this time for Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius. The Doctor entered play with no responses from Alec, and Bat-Signal was turned face down. Matt set up with Dagger protecting Doom and Alfred protecting Robot Sentry. He passed to Alec, who made use of his Flamethrower and Micro-Chip to burn Matt for 8 before recruiting. His only recruit for the turn was a lonely King Snake. In combat, Matt used Alfred to retrieve Reign of Terror. Alec lost his 1-drops, and Doom smashed into Black Panther. The 3-drop was KO’d, leaving Alec with an empty board. The score was now 40-12 in Alec’s favor.

Alec had the initiative on turn 5, and he recruited Electric Eve, Micro-Chip, and King Snake in succession. Flamethrower on King Snake was responded to with a Sentry activation, rendering the equipment useless for the turn. Alec passed. Mat exhausted Doom to play Bat-Signal for another Doom, which he played, again turning down the same Bat-Signal. Dagger was exhausted to Signal yet again, this time fetching Boris, Personal Servant of Dr. Doom. Boris was used to fetch a second Reign of Terror, and Matt played it targeting Alec’s entire team. Alec responded with a Die for Darkseid!, KO’ing King Snake, and a Micro-Chip activation on Wild Ride. Eve was returned, and Doom attacked directly. The endurance score was now 33-8 in Alec’s favor.

Matt under-dropped for 6 with Micro-Chip, Lacuna, and Alfred. He set up with them protecting Doom, Sentry, and Dagger, respectively. Alec recruited Electric Eve and Ratcatcher, and then reused his Wild Ride to fetch another Black Panther. With the Panther’s ability on the chain, Matt used Mystical Paralysis to exhaust it. Alec searched out Advanced Hardware and set up with Black Panther protecting Ratcatcher. In combat, Matt simply exhausted Electric Eve with Robot Sentry, and then passed. Alec played Mega-Blast on his Ratcatcher and declared an attack of Ratcatcher into Micro-Chip. Matt flipped Bat-Signal face down, rendering the attack illegal. Alec played another Mega-Blast, and Oldaker conceded to unavoidable lethal endurance loss.

Congratulations to Alec Ruden, $10K Minneapolis Champion!
