Quarterfinals: Tim Batow vs. Michael Dove
Matt MacLachlan

Mike is from Gurnee, Illinois and Tim is from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In the first game, Mike won the roll and elected to take the odd initiative. Both players decided to mulligan. Mike started things off with Destiny, and Tim responded with Harley Quinn. Mike attacked, revealing The New Brotherhood, and Tim reinforced with Harley. On the next turn, Tim led with Alfred Pennyworth and a GCPD Officer, which he immediately exhausted to play a Bat-Signal. Mike recruited Pyro.

Tim passed his attack, opting instead to put counters on his Rigged Elections. Mike attacked and stunned both Alfred and the GCPD Officer. Tim, of course, recovered Alfred. Mike, not missing a beat, recruited Rogue, Anna Raven in the front row, and formed up with Pyro behind Destiny. Tim played Marvel Team-Up naming Gotham Knights and Arkham Inmates, and activated Alfred to fetch Wild Ride. He then replayed Alfred and recruited Microchip. Mike attacked Alfred, Harley Quinn and Microchip, revealing Savage Land to power up Rogue on the final attack.

Tim recovered Alfred and began turn 4 by playing Wild Ride, which was met by a Not So Fast from Mike’s resource row. Tim activated Alfred after recruiting Dagger, Child of Light, fetching a Wild Ride. He finished his recruit step by playing Alfred again. Mike recruited Sabretooth, Feral Rage, and Tim offered to go to the next game.

Game Two

In the second game, Tim opted to take the even initative. Mike began turn 1 by recruiting Lorelei, which was met by Tim’s Alfred. They traded blows and both characters recovered. Tim played Dagger, revealing two Midnight Sons from his resource row and naming Gotham Knights and Fantastic Four. Tim activated Alfred, fetching a Wild Ride, and proceeded to play two more Wild Rides to fetch Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards and Invisible Woman, The Invisible Girl. He ended his recruit step by re-recruiting Alfred.

Mike played Thornn and Destiny in the front row and then activated Destiny’s ability, targeting Alfred. Tim sent Dagger to stun Thornn and discarded Mikado and Mosha to stun Lorelei. Mike recovered Lorelei and Tim recovered Dagger. On turn 3, Mike recruited Mystique, Raven Darkholme. He then formed with Mystique and Lorelei in the front row, and Destiny in the support row behind Mystique. Tim activated Alfred, fetching A Child Named Valeria, then recruited Alfred and Invisible Woman, The Invisible Girl. He set up in an L-formation, placing Invisible Woman in the front row protecting Dagger. Alfred was set up next to Dagger in the support row.

Mike played Flying Kick on Mystique to attack Dagger, but Tim activated Dagger to negate the attack. Mike then declared an attack of Mystique on Invisible Woman. Tim just smiled and removed the counter, as Mike realized Invisible Woman doesn’t allow breakthrough endurance loss. Lorelei attacked and stunned Invisible Woman, and both players recovered their characters.

On turn 4, Tim activated Alfred fetching Cosmic Radiation. He then recruited Harley Quinn, Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards and Alfred, forming all of his characters in the front row, except for Alfred, which was placed behind Mr. Fantastic. Mike recruited Sabretooth, Feral Rage. Tim played A Child Named Valeria and none of his characters stunned. On the next turn, Mike recruited Magneto, Eric Lehnsherr. Tim recruited Microchip and Harley Quinn, then proceeded to flip Rigged Elections and activate Alfred to fetch Cosmic Radiation. He exhausted his team to add counters to Rigged Elections and then playedCosmic Radiation; readying Alfred, fetching Cosmic Radiations, and re-recruiting until he generated the counters needed for the Rigged Elections win.

Game Three

In the final game of the match, Mike took odds and started off with a Surprise Attack from his resource row and a Thornn in his front row. This was met by Tim’s Invisible Woman, The Invisible Girl. Mike attacked with Thornn and Tim opted not to remove Invisible Woman’s counter. Tim recruited Mr Fantastic, Reed Richards on turn 2, met by Mike’s Toad. Tim had no attack, and Mike revealed The New Brotherhood and stunned Mr. Fantastic in the ensuing attack. Tim used Invisible Woman’s ability to negate the attack on her.

On turn 3, Mike recruited Quicksilver, Pietro Maximoff. Tim had no recruits. Mike attacked and Tim revealed A Child Named Valeria, negating Mike’s attacks. On the next turn, Tim recruited one GCPD Officer and attempted to use it to play a Bat-Signal, but was stopped by Not So Fast. Tim recruited Alfred and set up the GCPD Officer in front of Alfred and Mr. Fantastic in front of Invisible Woman. Mike recruited Sabretooth, Feral Rage and positioned all of his characters in the front row.

Mr. Fantastic attacked and Tim played A Child Named Valeria to stun Toad, which Mike chose to return to his hand. Mike attacked with Sabretooth after Tim passed his attack, and Tim reinforced Mr. Fantastic with Invisible Woman, taking no endurance loss because Mr. Fantastic was protected by A Child Named Valeria. Mike activated Quicksilver to burn Tim for 5 and both players moved on to the next turn. Mike played a fifth resource and then activated Genosha, drawing two cards. Mike played Sauron, and placed all of his characters in the front row.

Mike revealed a second copy of The New Brotherhood and proceeded to attack Mr. Fantastic. Tim reinforced once and played yet another copy of A Child Named Valeria, but Mike’s attacks still resulted in 15 breakthrough endurance loss. On turn 6, Tim activated Alfred to fetch his final copy of A Child Named Valeria and re-recruited Alfred. He then formed up with Invisible Woman and the GCPD Officer in the front row, Mr. Fantastic and Alfred in the support row, Alfred behind the Officer, and Reed behind the Invisible Girl. Mike simply recruited Pyro and formed him behind Sabretooth. Tim sent the Invisible Girl into Thornn and Mike powered up, stunning the Invisible Woman.

Tim, with few options left, sent the GCPD Officer to Thornn and then played his final A Child Named Valeria. Tim passed and Mike proceeded to swing in. Tim realized that the game was lost, and congratulated Mike on the win. Both players realized that the Rigged Elections deck needed to go off on turn 4 or 5 to stand a chance against the onslaught of the mighty New Brotherhood.
