We revisit Doug Tice in the final round of Day 1. He has a record of 2-1 thus far with his second Sealed Pack deck and needs to win this round to have any chance of making Top 24. His opponent, Osas Odemwingie, is a local player also battling for a spot in Day 2. Doug won the die roll and chose the odd initiatives. Both players kept their opening hands.
Doug had no play on the first turn, while Osas recruited Ted Kord ◊ Blue Beetle. On turn 2, Osas had a boosted Copperhead in front of Ted, while Doug had Captain Boomerang, George Harkness. Osas attacked in with Copperhead and used Death Trap to get Doug’s character off the board.
It was Doug’s initiative on turn 3, and he recruited David Clinton ◊ Chronos, The Time Thief. Before recruiting a character, Osas activated Ted to fetch a High-Tech Flare Gun. The gun was recruited to Copperhead, and Osas passed back to Doug without a character. Doug attacked David into Copperhead, and both characters stunned. Osas had an endurance lead of 46–42.
On turn 4, Osas recruited Poison Ivy, Kiss of Death in the front row. Copperhead was set in front of Ted beside her. Doug had a Poison Ivy of his own, which he set behind David. Osas declared his Poison Ivy into David, and Doug allowed it. He had no effects, and David stunned. Next, Osas attacked Copperhead into Poison Ivy. Glass Jaw provided enough of an advantage to force the stun. Before that happened, though, Doug exhausted his Poison Ivy to search out Gorilla Grodd with Mysterious Benefactor. The characters traded stuns, and Osas attacked directly with Ted to close the turn. He maintained a commanding lead of 45–29.
Doug had a lot of coming back to do on turn 5 and tried to start it with Darkseid, Heart of Darkness in front of Ivy. Osas under-dropped with Despero (naming Darkseid), then used Ted’s ability to search out Quadromobile. He transferred the Flare Gun to Despero, then set up with Poison Ivy protecting Copperhead and Despero protecting Ted. Osas then tried to recruit Quadromobile, but as he had already formed his characters, it was ruled that it was too late for him to do so. Doug attacked Poison Ivy with Darkseid, and Osas simply reinforced. Doug passed to Osas, who attacked Despero into Darkseid. Poison Ivy KO’d her counterpart, and the turn ended with neither player losing a character in the recovery step. Osas still led, 41–23.
Osas had Gorilla Grodd on turn 6, adding another layer to the pain he was piling on Doug. He recruited the Quadromobile onto Copperhead and then transferred the Flare Gun to Grodd. He set up with Despero protecting Grodd and Copperhead protecting Ted. Doug played Membership Drive and then a predictable Grodd of his own. He set up with Grodd protecting Ivy and Darkseid next to Grodd. Osas sent Grodd into his counterpart, and Doug had nothing to stop the attack. Both characters stunned. Next, Osas sent Despero into Ivy. She exhausted to KO Grodd—a major blow for Osas. Doug used Sinister Citadel to stop the stun, but Osas had Midnight Cravings to lock it down. Both characters were stunned. Osas had no other attacks, and Doug attacked into Copperhead with Darkseid. Sinister Citadel was used to KO Ivy and put a +1 ATK / +1 DEF counter on Darkseid. Osas took the endurance loss and ended the turn with a lead of 21–10.
Turn 7 was Doug’s initiative, and his board was suddenly a great deal more impressive than Osas’s. He played Wonder Woman, Princess Diana in front of Grodd and next to Darkseid. Osas had Guy Gardner, Egomaniac behind Ted and set Despero next to Guy in the support row. Doug went deep into the tank to consider his attacks. Time was called, and after almost a full five minutes of thinking, Doug came to a decision. He sent Grodd into Despero. Osas had no play, and Despero was stunned. Doug attacked Wonder Woman into Guy, and KO’d Grodd to put a +1 ATK / +1 DEF counter on her. Osas again had nothing and conceded the game.
Doug Tice wins!
