It’s springtime in Minnesota, and it couldn’t be nicer. The venue is a modern hotel just a few blocks from the Mall of America, and the format is none other than Golden Age Constructed. Exactly one hundred players have made the trip this Easter weekend, and I’ve seen some very interesting decks around the room. In a curious change from previous Golden Age tournaments, there aren’t many Savage Beatdowns to be found here today. Instead, players in the know are running intricate decks with cards like Slaughter Swamp; Dr. Light, Master of Holograms; and Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose.
There are professionals here from as far away as Florida and West Virginia, and they all have their eyes on the prize. And, of course, there are ten times as many local players, most of whom have put some serious testing in for this event, hoping for their first big finish. And many of the locals I’ve surveyed have some interesting tech up their sleeves. It’s always difficult to predict who will Top 8 an event like this, but for this particular format, I can almost guarantee that we’re going to see a lot of new decks.
