The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 16: Ryan Jones vs. Vidianto Wijaya
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Vidianto “Vidi” Wijaya and Ryan Jones are both members of Team Realmworx. They're also two of the best Vs. System players in the world. Ryan Jones won PC So Cal, and Vidianto Wijaya has an illustrious Top 8 history at multiple PC and $10K events.

Jones kept his hand and opted to take control of the initiative on turn 1. “Not pretty,” said Vidi, who decided to mulligan. He dropped The Hand on turn 2, while Jones recruited Gin Genie and attacked directly.

Jones's momentum continued to build on turn 3 when he recruited Daredevil, Protector of Hell's Kitchen. Then, Vidi recruited Cobra and grabbed a copy of Mr. Hyde. Daredevil swung at Cobra, The Hand responded, and Vidi flipped Geraci Family Estate to sop up 2 endurance loss. Both characters stunned.

On the next turn, Vidi recruited Jester, while Jones recruited Punisher, Jury and put him at the center of an “L” formation. Cobra attacked Gin Genie but was repelled by Moving Target. Jester then attempted to slap the Genie around.

“I'll take seven,” announced Jones.

“Yeah, that's what I expected to hear,” said Vidi, who amazingly was not swearing at all.

All characters recovered.

On turn 5, Battering Ram hit the field on each side of the table. Daredevil smashed into Jester, and Jones gave up 2 endurance for his effect. Vidi flipped Face the Master from his row, and Jones decided to flip Punisher's Armory, activate it, pay to ready it, and activate it again. Punisher himself then squeezed off some shots at Cobra, but Vidi flipped Marvel Team-Up to team X-Statix and Crime Lords. Then, he flipped Hand Dojo. The Hand exhausted for its ability, Shakedown appeared, and Punisher was stunned back.

Out of the Darkness pried The Hand out of the hidden area, and Gin Genie slapped it for the double-stun. Finally, Go in Swinging allowed Battering Ram to smite his evil twin without getting stunned back, and at the end of the turn, it was Vidi's Battering Ram against Jones's and the Punisher.

“If I didn't miss my three, I think I would've won this turn,” sighed Vidi with his usual smile. He recruited Blackheart for his 6-drop. Jones recruited U-Go-Girl, Eddie Sawyer for his and then fingered Head Shot. The endurance totals were 28 to 18 in Jones's favor, and he spent a great deal of time working on his formation before deciding on hiding Punisher in the back row behind the 6-drop.

Blackheart traded with U-Go-Girl, Eddie Sawyer, and Battering Ram smacked down the curve into Punisher. Jones didn't attack back, since he didn't want to go down to a single character without reason.

On turn 7, Jones recruited Nightmare. Vidi shook his head and recruited Jaime Ortiz ◊ Damage.

“Missing a 7-drop sucks,” declared Vidi. “Stupid Go in Swinging . . . saved you 5 damage.”

“It saved me a character too.”

“Yeah, well . . .” Vidi trailed off, clearly not going anywhere. Jones eyed the board and swung Nightmare into Battering Ram. He opted not to pay to prevent Hand Dojo's effect—a simple decision, but one that would cost him the game. Vidi blinked, flipped Out of the Darkness, and passed back to Jones.

Jones blinked. “Um, OK.” Both teammates scooped their cards because of the amount of pain that Vidi could dish out with attacks.

Vidianto Wijaya rescues himself at the last moment, coming back to win a surprising match!
