The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Quarterfinals: Neil Reeves vs. Adam Bernstein
Anand Khare

Adam is a Pro Circuit champion; Neil Reeves is a Sealed Pack specialist of great repute. These competitors played each other in Round 10, and Neil blew Adam out of the water. Adam’s got a chance to even the score right now, but for the loser of this match, there will be no second chances.

Game 1

Adam won the die roll and chose to take the odd initiatives. Adam mulliganed, while Neil kept. Adam had no first turn play. Neil had Insectoid Troopers and beat in for a point. On the second turn, Neil led with IQ, and Adam again had no play. Turn 3 was his chance to establish a little bit of board presence, but again, he had nothing. Neil had The Shark, Karshon and attacked in. At the end of the third turn, Neil was ahead 50–31.

Neil had Evan McCulloch ◊ Mirror Master in his visible area to start the fourth turn and pushed all of his characters to the front. Adam played Membership Drive, then Katar Hol ◊ Hawkman. He equipped it with Justice League Signal Device and passed. Neil sent Evan into Katar and played All Too Easy. Evan played Midnight Cravings from his hand to lessen the plot twist’s effect. He then flipped Reform the League and discarded a card to lessen the blow a little bit more. Still, he had five cards in hand and Katar was stunned. Neil team attacked directly with all of his characters and widened his lead to 46–14.

Adam was on the ropes, but he hit his 5-drop. John Henry Irons ◊ Steel, Steel-Drivin’ Man was recruited in front of Katar and equipped with Atlantean Trident. Neil had Martian Manhunter, J’onn Jonzz in the hidden area. Neil set up with all of his characters in the support row as follows: Troopers, IQ, The Shark, empty space, Evan. Adam sent Katar into IQ, and Neil simply reinforced with his Troopers. Next, Adam attacked Evan with John. Neil moved the Manhunter to reinforce and had no attacks of his own. He was still ahead 34–14.

On turn 6, Neil recruited Remoni-Notra ◊ Star Sapphire, Zamoran Champion in front of Evan. Martian Manhunter was left alone in the next support row, and The Shark protected Insectoid Troopers next to him. Adam recruited Hal Jordan, Hard-Traveling Hero in front of John. Katar was left next to John in the support row. Hal’s triggered ability moved Evan, and Neil chose to relocate him to the empty space in front of Martian Manhunter. Neil went into the tank to figure out his attacks. Eventually, he chose to attack Remoni into Katar. He flipped and used Gorilla City for another point of ATK and then passed. Adam powered-up, then paid a point to Reform the League to give Katar +6 ATK / +2 DEF. Both characters stunned, and Adam dropped to a precarious 8 endurance. Neil’s next attack brought everything except the Manhunter into Hal. Adam had Shake it Off and another copy of Reform the League to brickwall. Evan was stunned. Neil passed, and Adam sent Hal into the Manhunter. Neil paid 2 endurance to move him out of the way. Hal then attacked the Troopers, and Neil paid 2 to move the Manhunter back. John went after the Manhunter, and he once again darted out and then quickly in again when John attacked The Shark. At the end of the turn, Neil was ahead 16–8. On the next turn, a 7-drop came down and Adam conceded.

Game 2

Neil had his choice of initiatives this game and chose to take the odds. Both players kept their hands, and Neil led off with a different Army character, Infernal Minions, in the hidden area. Adam had Faith on the second turn, while Neil missed his 2-drop. Neil had Shadow-Thief for turn 3, and he searched out Illusionary Warriors to put into play. Adam had Aquaman, Arthur Curry in front of Faith. Neil got rid of his Minions to pump his Shadow-Thief and power down Aquaman. Shadow-Thief attacked in, and Adam had Reform the League to power-up Aquaman. His ally power targeted the Minions, but Neil had Slaughter Swamp to negate the effect. Adam had Shake it Off, but a Plasma Blast from Neil sealed the stun. Aquaman stunned. Next, Neil attacked Illusionary Warriors into Faith with All Too Easy. Both characters stunned, and Adam lost Faith at the end of the turn. Neil led in endurance, 46–42.

On turn 4, Adam once again had Katar Hol ◊ Hawkman behind Aquaman. Neil recruited Hector Hammond, Mind Over Matter. Adam contemplated his attacks and eventually decided to send Katar into Hector. Midnight Cravings and a power-up from Reform the League allowed the stun, then Aquaman attacked directly. Adam was now in the lead, 42–37.

For the fifth turn, Neil recruited Martian Manhunter, J’onn J’onzz in his hidden area. Adam had John Henry Irons ◊ Steel, Steel-Drivin’ Man behind Aquaman. Katar was set next to Aquaman in the support row. Neil sent Shadow-Thief and Illusionary Warriors into Aquaman. Shadow-Thief and Aquaman stunned. Neil then attacked Martian Manhunter into Katar; a power-up from Reform the League ensured that both characters stunned. Neil passed his attacks, and John took down Hector with help from another copy of Reform the League.

Turn 6 was Adam’s initiative and he recruited Captain Atom in front of Katar. John was set in the front row next to the Captain. Neil had a 6-drop in an attempt to survive, but Adam blew away his board. The score was 23–2 at the end of the turn, and Neil conceded to Adam’s 7-drop.
