Both players were tied at 4 points apiece in the final round for the day and would need this crucial final win to have a shot at making Day 2. I asked Bertram how he ended up in such dire straits, and he revealed that he had been at a friend’s party though the night and came to the event with a horrible hangover.
Adran won the die roll and chose the odd initiatives.
Turn 1:
Bertram recruited G’Nort.
(50 – 49)
Turn 2:
Bertram had Jack T. Chance, and Adran had Olapet.
Jack hammered into Olapet to clear the way for G’Nort to push some damage through.
(48 – 44)
Turn 3:
Dr. Polaris came down for Adran, but Bertram floundered with Light Armor on G’Nort. Dr. Polaris swung into G’Nort and exhausted Jack, which Bert used to reinforce in response. Adran flipped Only a Friend can Betray You to prevent his character from stunning. Olapet then traded with Jack to increase Adran’s board advantage.
Bertram opted to keep G’Nort.
(45 – 42)
Turn 4:
Bertram recruited Frostbite in the concealed area, while Adran flipped Book of Oa at the beginning of the recruit phase to look for his missing 4-drop. He missed, and like Bertram in the previous turn, had to be content with playing Light Armor on Olapet.
Frostbite swung into Olapet, hoping to stun the smaller character without stunning in return. Adran, however, had a different idea and flipped Nero Unleashed to bring about the desired double stun.
G’Nort then flew into the good doctor, but Adran had Pest Control to pump the DEF to 7—way beyond the range of the space dog’s bite.
The combat didn’t turn out quite as expected, and Bertram ended up losing G’Nort at the end of it all.
(40 – 35)
Turn 5:
Adran recruited Hal Jordan, Green Lantern of Sector 2814 in front of Olapet, whilst Bertram’s answer was Hal’s colleague, John Stewart. Hal smacked his colleague, and Bertram flipped Breaking Ground to have Book of Oa replaced and get a pump of +1 ATK/+1 DEF. Both Earthly Green Lanterns stunned. Olapet then exhausted to Sweep Up the remains of John Stewart.
Frostbite did the next best thing by swinging into Olapet. Having no further use for the Olapet in his hand, Adran used it to power up his character for the double stun and some endurance loss.
Adran lost Olapet.
(26 – 25)
Turn 6:
Bertram played Kilowog, discarding two GL characters, one of which was the swept up John Stewart.
“Thanks for contributing to the Kilowog, man”, Bertram joked, adding that he would not have had the second GL character if it had not been for the Sweeping Up.
Adran recruited Sinestro, Lantern in Exile.
Frostbite swung up the curve into Sinestro with Cosmic Conflict to pump it to 11 ATK. Adran, however, had Helping Hand, which was to no avail as Bertram played Yellow Impurity to ensure that the stun went though.
Kilowog then tried to smash Dr. Polaris into the ground, but Adran flipped Emerald Dawn to search for Ganthet. Kilowog readied and beat Hal Jordon down.
Hal Jordan was lost to this world.
(22 – 8)
Turn 7:
Adran brought the tutored Ganthet into play, while Bertram had Krona.
Krona moved Frostbite into his concealed area, and Adran exhausted Ganthet to pay for the Rain of Acorns on Kilowog before passing the initiative.
Krona proposed an attack on Sinestro, but Adran merely brought him into the concealed area.
Adran gained 11 endurance at the end of turn.
(22 – 19)
Turn 8:
Bertram played G’Nort and Two-Face, Split Personality, while Adran had Katma Tui.
Bertram chose odd for Two-Face’s ability, to which Adran responded to by exhausting Ganthet to gain 5 endurance.
Krona moved Katma Tui into the concealed region at the beginning of the combat phase, and Adran, viewing the odds, chose simply to concede.
Bertram makes Day 2.
