The Sentry™

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

New Zealand Tech: “Kiwi Fruit”
"The" Ben Seck

Some players like to play the most popular deck in the format. On the other hand, some players like to take the path less trodden. This is their story. The New Zealand contingent, affectionately known as “Kiwis” after their diminutive national bird, decided that dynamite for the format was to be found in the new Green Lantern Corps set. Utilizing the extreme redundancy of the search cards in the set, they came up with a deck that has all the answers to the Dr. Light combo deck while still being able to stand up the raw power of the rest of the Golden Age decks.

The deck has a plethora of different strategies against the field, with its strategy against Dr. Light/Rama-Tut the most honed. It involves using Dr. Light to recur Kyle Rayner in order to retrieve every Breaking Ground in the deck, while hitting the opposing Dr. Light repeatedly and using Chopping Block to remove him from the game. This stalls out the game until they can hit turn 5, when Scarlet Witch locks out the game (since every iteration of the combo costs the 5 endurance). Against Curve Sentinels, the deck plays a stalling game using Guardians Reborn and Lanterns in Love to maintain a board presence until it can set up Sinestro, Green Lantern of Korugar and send him to the Hidden area via Krona. This all sounds extremely complicated, and it is.

The Kiwis believe that their deck has a much good matchup with everything except Teen Titans, which they think is a problem, especially if the Titans player knows the right strategy to disrupt their board presence. Each of the members of the squad are wearing green all over—from their shirts to their caps and right down to the Green Lantern playmats. Hopefully this event will bring the onset of an Emerald Dawn in the Golden Age format.
