Round 10 is our final round after a long day. This round we have two of the best Vs. players in the world. Vidi Wijaya not only has multiple PC Top 8 appearances—he has also won more money than any player to pick up a Vs. card to date. Dean is also a respected Vs. pro and has many money finishes to his name.
Both players took a mulligan, and Vidi revealed Aquaman, King of the Seven Seas to me. “I always mulligan this guy away,” he said. When he drew his next hand, he pounded the top of his deck (hoping for a Boris, presumably) but came up empty and passed on the first turn. Dean, however, had Dawn Granger ◊ Dove, Agent of Order and attacked for 1.
For turn 2, Vidi played San in the hidden area and searched his deck for a Doomstadt. Dean didn’t have a character, so he just played a resource and passed the turn. Vidi attacked Dawn with San, and Dean took 2.
On turn 3, Dean recruited Roy Harper, Arsenal. Vidi had Dr. Doom, Richards’s Rival and revealed Crisis on Infinite Earths, which went on the top of his deck. Dr. Doom attacked Roy Harper, the characters traded stuns, and San ran over Dove again. Dean recovered Roy Harper, and they moved on to the next turn.
Turn 4 Vidi played Political Pressure before Dean recruited anything. Dean played Terra, Tara Markov and equipped Reality Gem to his Roy Harper, discarding Garth to blow up Political Pressure.
“Awkward,” said Vidi. “I probably shouldn’t have played that yet. That was so bad. I wanted to flip it down with Dr. Doom, but I don’t know why. I guess it’s fine for me if he kills that instead of my Doomstadt, though.” He recruited Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius and turned down Crisis on Infinite Earths instead.
Dean team attacked the Diabolic Genius with Roy Harper and Terra. After the attack became legal, Vidi played Reign of Terror targeting Roy Harper. Terra was too small to take down the Doctor and became stunned, leaving Vidi free to go straight to the nugget with his team.
Vidi recruited Kristoff Von Doom, Pretender to the Throne on turn 5, put all his characters into his front row, and passed, looking pretty aggressive. Dean played Garth and paid 3 endurance to return Reality Gem from his KO’d pile. He then equipped the Gem to Terra, discarding Roy Harper to blow up Doomstadt.
Vidi contemplated his attacks for a bit before deciding to send the Diabolic Genius at Terra and powering-up. Dean responded by flipping Titans Tower and activating it, discarding Beast Boy, Garfield Logan. Dean then activated Terra targeting Dr. Doom, Richards’s Rival. Vidi KO’d Richards’s Rival to replace a resource rather than return him to his hand. Vidi then sent Kristoff after Garth and passed. The characters traded stuns, and San was free to attack Dean directly. He decided to throw in a Savage Beatdown for good measure.
On turn 6, Dean looked frustrated sitting at 2 endurance since he couldn’t activate his Garth. “That’s why I went beatdown last turn,” said Vidi, “so he couldn’t activate his Garth.” What a master, that Vidi Wijaya. It’s no wonder he’s been so successful thus far.
Dean recruited Roy Harper, Arsenal and put him in front of Garth. Vidi decided not to play a resource but played another Dr. Doom, Richards’s Rival. With the effect on the chain, he played Reign of Terror targeting Roy Harper, to which Dean responded by activating Roy to stun San. Richards’s Rival resolved, getting Mystical Paralysis, which Vidi then put in his resource row by KO’ing the recently stunned San. He then played a Boris, Personal Servant of Doom and activated it to search his deck for a Savage Beatdown. When he exhausted Garth with Mystical Paralysis, Dean extended the hand.
Both players hung out for a few minutes to chat. Vidi said that he expected to be playing the World of Warcraft TCG by Saturday but was pleasantly surprised with his 8-2 finish on Day 1. The players looked at each other’s decks for a minute. Vidi was surprised to see Misappropriation in Dean’s deck. Sohnle’s explanation: “All the dealers were sold out of Meltdowns, so this was the best I could do.”
Vidianto Wijaya defeats Dean Sohnle.
