Secret Society has never gotten the respect it deserves, even with a Pro Circuit win under its belt. Perhaps after two wins in a row and a win in the ultra-competitive Golden Age format, people would respect the villains of Vs. System. Joe Bryan intends to do his part.
Joe’s deck is a mix of old and new. The old is the Fate Artifacts. Many of the decks in the room today feature the Fate Artifacts as a way to both super-size their characters and keep the opponent from killing their best plays. This deck runs a pair of Dr. Fate’s Towers, two each of the Artifacts, and then Ape X and Poison Ivy, Deadly Rose to gain access to both.
The new is the ability to abuse Frankie Raye ◊ Nova, Optimistic Youth. While the Fate Artifacts have been out for months, Frankie Raye first made waves at the recent $10K Columbus in a deck known as Lost in Space, played by Tim Capes to a Top 8 finish there. The goal of that deck was to play Frankie Raye as many times in one turn as possible, drawing through most of the deck and filling the KO’d pile with goodies to return with Slaughter Swamp and Soul World. Lex Luthor, Criminal Genius and Sinister Citadel allowed the deck to take advantage of the many, many recruits it made, and Dr. Light, Master of Holograms was the icing on the cake.
There are, of course, some common elements. Both Capes and Calabrese counted on Deadshot, Floyd Lawton to control the board and Poison Ivy to find the locations needed to run the deck.
Joe Bryan took his favorite elements of the best Fate Artifact deck, Anthony Calabrese’s PC-winning curve Secret Society build, and the best Frankie Raye deck, Capes’s Lost in Space, and Frankensteined together a Golden Age monstrosity that’s carried him to a 6-1 record so far.
