Eric Wood is from Seattle. He finished in the Top 8 at both the Columbus and Philadelphia $10K events, and also earned an invite for the PC via his rating. Wood is playing Fike’s signature deck, Wild Vomit.
Rian Fike, a fan favorite from Florida, is well known for both his affinity for Purple and his Vs. System community involvement. He is not playing his signature Sentinels, but is instead running TNB Blitz.
Wood won the roll and decided to go second. Rian kept his hand, but Wood mulliganed. On turn 1, Wood recruited and activated Longshot twice, thanks to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. He missed both times. Rian did not recruit anything.
On turn 2, Wood again used Longshot twice, hitting once for two Wild Sentinels and a Mark IV. Fike again missed his drop, despite the fact that a full third of his deck consists of 1- and 2-cost characters. Wood swung for 4.
On turn 3, Fike finally recruited Avalanche. Wood did the double-Longshot trick again, missing his second time but hitting a pair of Wild Sentinels and Sentinel Mark IVs on the first attempt. He recruited three Wild Sentinels, used Search and Destroy on Avalanche, and then swung directly for 6.
Turn 4 began with Wood double-Longshotting again. He again hit nothing on the second attempt and a pair of Wild Sentinels and Mark IVs on his first attempt. He recruited a Mark IV. Fike recruited Blob to protect Avalanche, and Wood quickly attacked into Blob with the Mark IV. Rian flipped The New Brotherhood in response, but Wood powered up the Mark IV three times to keep it out of stun range. Avalanche reinforced Blob as Blob was stunned. Wood used Search and Destroy on Avalanche yet again, and then attacked directly for 4.
Fike recruited Magneto on turn 5, and Wood’s Longshot netted him three more cards. He recruited a Mark IV and a Wild Sentinel, and then brought out a second Mark IV via Underground Sentinel Base. Fike had initiative for combat and exhausted a Mark IV with Magneto’s effect. He spent some time carefully considering his next move before attacking Longshot with Magneto, flipping up and blowing away a Genosha, and flipping a Savage Land. “I’m reeeeal mad at Longshot,” he added. Then he passed initiative and walloped Longshot for 30. Wood and Fike laughed as Wood proceeded to Cover Fire twice. Rian spouted a barrage of hilarious quotes:
“That looks like a fun deck . . . I think I’ll play it some time.”
“Why didn’t you get my last feature match? I won with Unus!”
Wood’s horde of flying purple goodness proceeded to maul Blob and Magneto. Then, the straggling Wilds rushed Fike directly for game.
