The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017
While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 1: Hans-Joachim Höh vs. Fabrice Bonningre |

The tournament is underway, and who better to feature in the first round than $10K phenomenom Hajo Höh. He had already won two of them before making yet another top 8 at $10K Amsterdam. He’s playing a fairly unknown Frenchman who, although not very famous in the Vs. world, did sport a nice soccer T-shirt . . . and he wanted to let us know that his club was the best! Of course, I don’t know the first thing about soccer, so if you ask me what team he was talking about I’ll have to disappoint you. Maybe it wasn’t even soccer. It’s a great team, though!
The game got underway with double Dagger, Child of Light for Fabrice, one getting his beat on and the other fetching Midnight Sons. He then revealed both his resource cards to be Midnight Sons and teamed up both Brotherhood and Underworld. Dagger got in for another poke when Hans passed again. Turn 3 was Hans’ initiave. It was time for him to do something and he obliged, recruiting Sentinel Mark II. Fabrice brought Brother Voodoo into play. Mark flew right over the scary Brother to get back at Dagger for all the pinpricks. Fabrice went on a Wild Ride to kick off the fourth turn, and fetched Centurious before finally retiring Dagger. While Fabrice played at a brisk pace, fidgeting with his discard pile and checking and re-checking his face down cards, Hans was more like a glacier. A big, slow glacier . . . with no sun in sight. Finally, he settled on Sentinel Mark V. Centurious, tired of all the waiting, smashed into big Mark and got powered up by the ever-present Dagger. This, of course, caused Hans to think some more. His plan was to Savage Beatdown Centurious, to which Fabrice responded with Mist Form. That didn’t work out quite well, though, as Hans just Overloaded the 4-drop in response. Big Mark then attacked Brother Voodoo, and little Mark exhausted to enable a Finishing Move on Centurious.
Turn 5 brought another Mark V, although with boost this time, for Hans while Avalon Space Station got Fabrice back the Mephisto, Soulstealer he discarded earlier to Brother Witch Doctor. The boosted big Mark got rid of Mr. Voodoo and little big Mark and little Mark put Fabrice at 13 to Hans’ very healthy 48. Mephisto then attacked the 4-drop Mark and Fabrice countered Nasty Surprise with another Mist Form, which worked this time. Things were still not looking good, though, and Fabrice needed a big turn 6 to get back in the game. A boosted Moon Knight wasn’t the best drop imaginable, but it would have to do. Bastion was Hans’ response, and he took some time to figure out the best formation to combat the French “all-in formation,” a term invented by (you guessed it) poker fans to describe the all in front setup. Hans settled on boosted Mark and little Mark in front with Bastion and big Mark supporting them. The 14 ATK/7 DEF Moonknight monster charged into Sentinel Mark II, who unfortunately was reinforced by the Mark V behind him. Brother Voodoo then got medieval with a Crime and Punishment and smacked Mark V around a bit. Mark V revealed his past circus experience with an Acrobatic Dodge. Mr. Voodoo was used to all the pretty animals and would have none of his tricks, as he got powered up with a Lost City in play. This gave Hans plenty more to think about. Eventually, he came up with the following—Boost Mark V three times with Bastion, making it a 7 ATK/13 DEF. Avalon Space Station got Brother Voodoo’s twin brother back for another ride to the discard pile and the dust settled with a 13 ATK/10 DEF Brother triumphing over Mark V. Mephisto then got huge, eating three characters in Hans’ and 7 in Fabrice’s discard pile, making it a 15 ATK. That made him feel good enough about himself to try and eat Bastion’s soul. It worked, stunning both, putting Hans at 27 to Fabrice’s 8. That’s all for climactic suspense, though, as Boosted Mark V simply attacked Brother Voodoo and did exactly enough to finish Fabrice off.
Hans-Joachim Höh wins!
