The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 4: Jon Steward vs. Matt Weston
Enchante Chang

Round 4 pits two Victorians against each other. Both Jon Stewart Jones and Matt Weston are up-and-comers in the world of Vs., and both are looking to improve on their 3-0 records.

Jon won the roll and chose to take the even initiatives.

Turn 1

Boris was Matt’s play, signaling he could be running Common Enemy, which is one of the best decks in the format at the moment. Jon discarded Mikado and Mosha to stun Boris, but Matt countered with a flipped-up Doomstadt and activated Boris to get Faces of Doom. The turn ended with no attacks from either player.

Turn 2

This time, Jon recruited Mikado and Mosha. Matt stared at his empty turn-2 board and took 1 endurance loss from Mikado and Mosha.

Turn 3

Matt recruited Titania, Big Bad Bully, and Jon matched with Kang, Kang Cobra in the hidden area. Titania had no other options but to attack Mikado; Jon didn’t want to lose his Mikado, so he declined to attack with Kang Cobra. The score was 49-46 going into turn 4.

Turn 4

Before a resource was placed, Jon discarded Dagger, Child of Light to get Midnight Sons, which was then placed in the resource row and flipped immediately to team up Kang Council and Marvel Knights. He then recruited Kang, Master of Time.

Matt had quite a long turn as well and flipped up Faces of Doom to get Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius. Matt then proceeded to flip up Signal Flare to get Hulk, New Fantastic Four, and then flipped the Signal Flare back down when Doom was recruited. But that wasn’t it, as Matt had Reign of Terror for Kang Cobra. Then Matt passed priority to Jon.

Jon’s first attack was Master of Time into Titania with a power-up; Matt also had a power-up that forced another power-up from Jon and caused a one sided stun.

Jon only had Mikado left, and passed it over so that Doom could massacre Mikado with a Savage Beatdown. The endurance totals were 43-34 in Matt’s favor.

Turn 5

More cards from the Fantastic Four starter set came out for Matt in Submariner, Atlantean Monarch, which exhausted Master of Time via his 187 (comes into play) effect. Jon had Kang, Ultimate Kang and passed it back over to Matt. The first attack was Titania into Mikado, who got reinforced by Ultimate Kang. Doom and Submariner team attacked Ultimate Kang to ensure the stun; both Submariner and Kang stunned. Again, Jon drew two extra cards via Master of Time, and the endurance totals were 38-28 to Matt.

Turn 6

Another Midnight Sons teamed up Brotherhood and Marvel Knights for Jon, which meant that every Kang power-up equated to +3 ATK and +3 DEF. He also flipped up Avalon Space Station and Lost City. He then recruited Kang, Lord Kang.

Matt had Hulk in front of Doom and Submariner in front of Titania. Master of Time powered-up and attacked Submariner, and both characters fell. Ultimate Kang was up next and powered-up twice to make a point to Hulk. Both characters stunned, as Jon did not realize that his guy would stun too. Lastly, Lord Kang attacked Doom, who was reinforced by Titania. Doom stunned.

A very useful turn for Jon nipped back the endurance totals to 20-19 in Matt’s favor. Matt chose to keep Hulk and Titania around.

Turn 7

Matt had a different Submariner this turn, Submariner, Ally of Doom, and moved all his characters into the front row. Jon had Kang, Lord of Limbo and also moved all of his characters into the front row. At the start of combat, Submariner was moved to the hidden area. Hulk attacked into Ultimate Kang, but Ultimate Kang didn’t want to be stunned, so he stunned Lord Kang instead. Submariner then attacked into Ultimate Kang with a Savage Beatdown, but 4 power-ups later, he trumped the Ally of Doom. Titania didn’t want to be Savaged by the Lord of Limbo, so she suicided into him. Lord of Limbo then attacked into Hulk for the last attack of this turn, and the endurance totals were now 6-1 in favor of Jon!

Turn 8

Jon had Kang, Immortus in his KO’d pile, and thanks to Avalon Space Station, got him back and placed everyone in the front row. Matt had no 8-drop this turn but played three copies of Boris, fetching Faces of Doom, Mystical Paralysis, and Savage Beatdown. He then used the Faces to get Diabolic Genius, played him, used Mystical Paralysis to exhaust Immortus, and passed. Jon sent Doom into the hidden area with Submariner and then smashed with everyone to the dome. Matt could only muster Submariner into Ultimate Kang with a Savage Beatdown, but it wasn’t enough.

Jon Stewart Jones Wins!
