Round 4 Feature Match: Paul Van der Werk vs. Dale Pepperell
Enchante Chang

After round 3, there aren’t many players left with a record of 3-0. Round 4 put the co-owner of VSparadise, Paul Van der Werk, against New Zealand’s own Dale Pepperell.
Paul won the coin flip with heads and selected even initiative. No one mulliganed.

Paul had the only turn 1 play of New Blood, and swung for 2 endurance loss. Paul then laid Steel Wind and placed it behind New Blood. Dale had Hannibal King. Paul swung straight through Dale’s concealed character, and Dale retaliated by swinging into New Blood. Paul paid the 1 endurance required to keep New Blood around.

Morbius was Dale’s best play and, under pressure, he forgot to search out Hypnotic Charms. Paul played Mr. Hyde just before Morbius went to town on Steel Wind, but not before he put Saracen in the KO’d pile. Both players passed, and the endurance totals were 43–44 in Paul’s favor.

Masked Marauder came into play behind Mr. Hyde. Dale thought for a second before becoming a copycat and played his own Masked Marauder. It was a smart move on Paul’s behalf when he exhausted Dale’s Marauder so he could do extra breakthrough and prevent Dale from counter-attacking. Paul’s Marauder attacked Morbius, and after that all 3 of Paul’s army went after the opposing Marauder. At the end of the, turn Dale chose Morbius to head to the KO’d pile. Endurance totals at this point were 32–44 in favor of Paul.

Dale had the initiative this turn, and played Iron Fist, Living Weapon but Paul played what is most likely the best 5-drop in the format, the doubly loyal Deathwatch! Paul’s formation was Mr. Hyde, Masked Marauder, and New Blood in the front row, Deathwatch behind Masked Marauder, and Steel Wind behind New Blood. Dale tried to replicate Paul’s move from earlier by exhausting Steel Wind and attacking the New Blood for lots of breakthrough, but Dale forgot that Deathwatch gave everyone reinforcement! Iron Fist attacked Masked Marauder, but Paul had Face the Master! Paul seemed to have everything under control, but Dale hasn’t even flipped up one plot twist. It seemed like he might be saving it all for the final turn. Endurance stood at 21–33, still in Paul’s favor.

Luckily for Paul, he had the initiative this turn . . . his plays were Kingpin, Wilson Fisk and Owl. Dale’s play was the good card Asmodeus, but it didn’t seem so good with Deathwatch looking ahead. Paul’s Marauder exhausted Asmodeus, but not before he exhausted himself and KO’d a resource. Both players KO’d a card in their resource row. Deathwatch, with the help of Owl’s flight ability and Black Magic, nailed Marauder into the ground—but luckily, not into the KO’d pile, as Dale had Marvel Team-Up to team up Crime Lords with Marvel Knights. Steel Wind, Kingpin and Masked Marauder came into the fray and attacked Asmodeus, which stunned Kingpin back. At this point Dale had nothing, and he congratulated Paul on the win. The great sportsmanship of these guys really showed as they stood around and talked about the game.

Paul Van der Werk wins!
