Emmanuel, as you should know by now, is one of the three players from the Philippines present today. At this point he was 4-2, and it seemed that he should make Day 2, but he was not yet assured a spot.
Bertram is likewise teetering on the brink of Day 2. A pioneer of the game from Singapore, Bertram has not touched these cards since he took an assignment that sent him to China some six months back. Still, he remains one of the highest-ranking Sealed Pack players present, and is one of but a handful of Asian players who can boast of Pro Circuit experience (he attended PCLA 2004).
Emmanuel won the die roll and chose the even initiatives. Both players threw their initial hands back.
Turn 1: Emmanuel played Manhunter Clone. Endurance: Bertram 49, Emmanel 50.
Turn 2: Bertram recruited The Wizard, while Emanuel missed his drop. Endurance: Bertram 49, Emmanel 49.
Turn 3: Bertram under-dropped with Maxwell Lord, while Emmanuel had Joseph Jones ◊ General Glory. Emmanuel formed Joseph in front of the Manhunter Clone. Bertram flipped Justice League Task Force and called JLI and SS, which allowed him to team attack Joseph Jones. Emmanuel evaded Manhunter Clone at the end to mill the top card of Bertram’s deck. Endurance: Bertram 47, Emmanuel 45.
Turn 4: Emmanuel had Ice, who was formed into the focal point of the “L” with Joseph Jones protecting her. Bertram mirrored Emmanuel’s drop and had Maxwell Lord protect her. Joseph Jones swung down into Maxwell Lord and stunned him before Emmanuel’s Ice went after her twin for a double stun. Finally, Manhunter Clone ran into The Wizard with Glass Jaw for another double stun. Bertram was left with a lone Ice while Emmanuel kept Ice and Joseph Jones. Endurance: Bertram 46, Emmanuel 40.
Turn 5: Bertram mustered Scarecrow, Fearmonger and formed with him in front. Emmanuel recruited Poison Ivy, Kiss of Death and equipped Ice with Atlantean Trident. In combat, Bertram’s Ice went for Emmanuel’s, but Emmanuel was ready with a Magnificent Seven to power up his character. He also exhausted Ice to target Scarecrow with the curse of not being able to ready that turn. Bertram flipped Bizarro Ray and paid a point of endurance in a bid to negate the power-up, but this only opened a window for Emmanuel to flip Balance of Power. Outmaneuvered, Bertram could only have Scarecrow attack Joseph Jones to whittle Emmanuel’s endurance. Poison Ivy blew Ice a kiss of death at the end of turn and KO’d her. Endurance: Bertram 32, Emmanuel 31.
Turn 6: Emmanuel recruited Captain Atom and formed in a square with Ice and Captain Atom behind Poison Ivy and Joseph Jones respectively. Bertram brought Metamorpho into play and had him in support behind Scarecrow. He also equipped Scarecrow with Nth Metal. At the beginning of the combat phase, Bertram moved a counter from Ice onto Scarecrow, but Emmanuel had Counterterrorism to move it right back.
Emmanuel then swung Captain Atom into Scarecrow and stunned him. Ice and Joseph Jones team attacked Metamorpho, and Bertram chose Ice to be the character Metamorpho brought down with him. Emmanuel activated Poison Ivy to KO Metamorpho and flipped Funky’s Big Rat Code, naming SS and JLI, to force Bertram to mill an additional three cards off the top of his deck. Endurance: Bertram 21, Emmanuel 27.
Turn 7: Bertram played Wonder Woman, Princess Diana beside the Scarecrow in the front row, while Emmanuel played Evan McCulloch ◊ Mirror Master in the hidden area and Rocket Red #4. He formed with Poison Ivy and Joseph Jones protecting Ice and Captain Atom respectively, while Rocket Red was placed beside Captain Atom.
At the beginning of the combat phase, Bertram moved a counter from Ice to Power Princess. Wonder Woman then swung into Captain Atom, which prompted Emmanuel to reinforce with Rocket Red before allowing his character to stun. Next, Bertram swung Scarecrow into Joseph Jones and paid 1 endurance for Bizarro Ray’s ability. Given the initiative, Emmanuel surprised Bertram by flipping Lair of the Mastermind, which he used to allow Evan McCulloch to team attack Wonder Woman with Ice. Though Bertram was able to bring Ice down with his character, Poison Ivy activated to KO Wonder Woman. In contrast, Emmanuel only lost Joseph Jones. Endurance: Bertram 13, Emmanuel 4.
Turn 8: Emmanuel played Mark Desmond ◊ Blockbuster and had Rocket Red behind Captain Atom, while the rest of his characters stood in the front flanking Captain Atom in a “T” formation. Bertram recruited Martian Manhunter ◊ J’onn J’onzz in the concealed area, along with James Jesse ◊ Trickster and Ted Kord ◊ Blue Beetle. He formed in an “L”, with Scarecrow protecting Ted Kord. Emmanuel team attacked Scarecrow with Rocket Red and Poison Ivy. Scarecrow and Poison Ivy stunned. Evan McCulloch then attacked James, and Ted reinforced. Next, Captain Atom attacked Ted Kord, and Bertram paid 2 endurance to move Martian Manhunter beside Ted Kord for reinforcement. Finally, Mark Desmond attacked Martian Manhunter, and that was the game. |
