Round 9: Bertram Chuang vs. Mon Lopez
Noel Neo

Bertram chose the odd initiatives, and Day 2 began with Bertram recruiting Zazzala ◊ Queen Bee, Mistress of the Hive in the concealed area and Mon playing Zatanna, Magical Manipulator on turn 3. They traded stuns and moved on to the next turn.

Mon proceeded to recruit Witchfire in front of Zatanna, while Bertram had Bizarro, ME AM BIZARRO #1. Witchfire double stunned with Bizarro, and Zatanna had a clear shot at Bertram. Bertram exhausted Zazzala for Systematic Torture, taking the lead in board position.

On turn 5, Bertram played Annihilation Protocol ◊ OMAC Robot in front of Bizarro, while Mon had Black Adam, Teth-Adam beside Zatanna in the support row. Bizarro attacked Black Adam and Mon teamed-up Shadowpact and Villains United with Coercion to allow reinforcement with Zatanna. Both characters stunned, and Mon chose the OMAC Robot for vengeance. Bertram exhausted Zazzala to KO Black Adam through Annihilation Protocol’s ability, but Mon flipped No Mercy and returned him to KO Bizarro instead. Annihilation Protocol then attacked Zatanna and Mon powered-up for a double stun.

Mon had Dr. Psycho, Twisted Telepath protecting Zatanna on turn 6, while Bertram recruited Alexander Luthor, Diabolical Double in front of Annihilation Protocol. Dr. Psycho attacked Luthor and Mon flipped Forbidden Loyalties and put a token on Dr. Psycho before flipping Burning Gaze. Bertram flipped Defend Yourself! and played Forbidden Loyalties from hand to put a token on Luthor in a bid for a double stun. Yet it was all for naught when Mon removed The Phantom Stranger to save Dr. Psycho. He then flipped Mystical Binding targeting the OMAC Robot. Mon had the lead in endurance, 31 to 16.

On turn 7, Bertram had Elimination Protocol ◊ OMAC Robot in hand but instead chose to recruit The Calculator, Evil Oracle; Sarge Steel; and Retrieval Protocol ◊ OMAC Roboat. Mon boosted Alexander Luthor, Diabolical Double into play and dropped an additional Talia, Beloved Betrayer to his ability. He formed with Dr. Psycho protecting Zatanna and Alexander Luthor protecting his protege.

Bertram had Retrieval Protocol attack Talia, and he discarded a character card to give all OMAC Robots +1 ATK / +1 DEF. However, Mon was able to remove another The Phantom Stranger, and Bertram was forced to use I Still Hate Magic! Mon still had another trick up his sleeve, though, flipping Abjuration and preventing his character from stunning. His first attack foiled. Sarge Steel and Annihilation Protocol team attacked Dr. Psycho. Dr. Psycho and Sarge Steel stunned. Bertram then had his Luthor attack his Diabolical Double and returned Retrieval Protocol with The Calculator, Evil Oracle to boost his Luthor and stun Mon’s. The Calculator attacked Mon’s Zatanna and Bertram flipped Grand Gesture, returning his Luthor and allowing Zazzala ◊ Queen Bee, Mistress of the Hive to continue her slow grill. Mon flipped Defend Yourself! and reinforced with Talia for a double stun, bringing both players down to -2 endurance. However, once Zazzala attacked Talia, it was game. Bertram wins and advances to the quarterfinals!
