Metagame Breakdown
Mary Van Tyne and John Stephens

The Wizard World Chicago 10K Championship marks the first major tournament to use DC Origins in a constructed environment. With only a week to go before the first Pro Circuit, many people will be watching this tournament in an attempt to predict what the metagame will look like next week in Indianapolis.

A quick look at the major archetypes shows that despite the release of DC Origins, most people decided to stick with the tried and true. Fantastic Four decks were out in force today, both Fantasic Four beatdown and the Dr. Doom/Fantasic Four team up deck commonly known as Common Enemy.  Sammy Gilly piloted his Common Enemy deck to the best record of Day 1, and will enter Day 2 as the first seeded player with this deck.

The second type of commonly played Fantastic Four deck, the Fantastic Four Beatdown deck, placed three people into tomorrow's quarterfinals, including second place qualifier Eric Wall. The Fantastic Four Beatdown deck uses the superior five-drop Thing, Heavy Hitter and the excellent six-drop Hulk, New Fantastic Four to outclass its opponents. These two characters are typically far better than anything an opponent can play on his or her corresponding turn.
