Deck Profile: Di Shi

As I was looking through the decklists, I was really hoping something would catch my eye. Lucky for me, I found a deck that stood out like a broken thumb. Di Shi is a Michigan player who has been working with a team from RIW Hobbies, one of the most prestigious teams in gaming in the Midwest. His deck is a Gamma Doom/League of Assassins hybrid that has catapulted him to a 2-0 record to start this grueling event. I’ve been obsessed with League of Assassins since they first hit the scene but, unfortunately, they have never been on the same level as the tier one decks in the format. Shi has a solution to this problem, though. It involves another of my favorite Vs. cards, the good Doctor himself—Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius.

The deck uses its Doom roots to slow the opponent down as much as possible with Mystical Paralysis, Reign of Terror, and Submariner, Atlantean Monarch. Ultimately, it takes control in the late game with a Gamma Bomb to pave the way for Ra’s Al Ghul, The Demon’s Head and Apocalypse. Shi says his dream match-up is actually Curve Sentinels which, luckily for him, has been the most prevalent deck at every Modern Age tournament for the last year. He claims that with all of his disruption, Curve Sentinels can’t deal enough damage to him to hurt him before he can Gamma Bomb. Then, he just takes control.

This deck was reworked with the help of his RIW Hobbies teammates. Those teammates include Michael Jacob, who actually won the last $10K Chicago, and Aaron Brieder, who made Top 8 at $10K Columbus earlier this year. We’ll keep track of Shi’s progress, and let you know if his deck can stand up to the purple tide before him.
