The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 5: Anthony Justice vs. Mike Turian
Josh Bennett

Anthony Justice is a long time Magic player from Kentucky, and is applying the skills he learned there to the Vs. System. Justice’s playgroup has been ripping up PCQ’s around their area. Traveling for tournaments might not seem worth it, but when it puts six of the ten members of your team on the Pro Circuit, it looks like a steal of a deal. Unfortunately, Justice is one of the four unqualified. After a 4-0 start, he’s in a good position to earn his ticket here this weekend. He’s playing a Fantastic Four–Doctor Doom control deck.

This round, he faces “Iron” Mike Turian, one of Magic’s titans. Of course, he’s out of his element this weekend, having only picked up the game recently. After a cram session with Gabe Walls and Neil Reeves, he figures he’s ready to rumble. The Sentinels he’s playing have made it easier on him.

Turian kicked things off with Longshot and started boosting his hand. Justice didn’t get on the board until She-Thing on his second turn. Turian had a pair of Wild Sentinels, and pitched a third to take her down and force through 2 extra damage. Unsurprisingly, Turian’s third turn yielded three more Wild Sentinels. Justice hired Darkoth and put him behind She-Thing. A pitch and a team-attack later, and both of Justice’s characters were face down. He saved Darkoth.

Justice flipped up Common Enemy, then Signal Flared for Boris. He hired the 1-drop as well as She-Hulk. Turian, unsurprisingly, brought out a Mark IV. She-Hulk attacked a Wild Sentinel, which powered up three times. In response, Justice flipped up Doomstadt and tutored for Flame Trap with Boris. It stunned all the Wild Sentinels, negating the attack and readying She-Hulk. He dove at the Mark IV, and Justice turned up his last facedown resource: Savage Beatdown. Turian shrugged and pitched four Mark IV’s.

They recovered and Turian brought out another Mark IV and a Wild Sentinel. Justice made a Robot Destroyer. The Destroyer took down the first Mark IV that tried to tangle with She-Hulk, but Turian swung in with the other and powered up with the last card in his hand. Unfortunately, Justice wasn’t supposed to survive this long. He was able to recover and then recruit the 6-drop Doctor Doom. Turian flipped up both his Reconstruction Programs in response to get back four Wild Sentinels and two Mark IV’s, then played a Mark IV and two Wilds. Doom deep-sixed one of the Mark IV’s and the Robot Destroyer took care of the other. The rest of Turian’s gang picked on Doom. With two pitches he was able to take down the big man. The life totals were 18 to 12 for Turian.

Turian rebuilt but Justice could only shake his head. Two Overloads for his Mark IV’s, and then a Signal Flare for Thing, The Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing left him without a board.

“Big game. Big game.” – Mike Turian.

Justice 1 – Turian 0

“It’s funny, you wish that deck good luck, really all you mean is, ‘Maybe you’ll get Longshot in your first ten cards.’” – Anthony Justice

Justice opened turn one with Boris. Turian led off without the deck’s lynchpin, instead making a Wild Sentinel, and then two more on his second turn. Justice had no play and ate some damage. He put a stop to Turian’s show with She-Hulk on his third turn. Turian only had two more Wild Sentinels. She-Hulk trampled one of the 1/1’s, then an Acrobatic Dodge put her out of the reach of a team attack. Worse, it meant that Boris would survive another turn.

Sure enough, Justice answered Turian’s Mark IV with Dr. Doom, allowing him to use Boris to search up a Flame Trap. Turian couldn’t swing with his Mark IV because the Trap would eliminate his board, and the ready She-Hulk would devour it. He had to watch as she and Dr. Doom picked off his Wild Sentinels.

Signal Flare bought Justice a Robot Destroyer (thanks to Common Enemy). Turian brought out another Mark IV, and then a second thanks to Underground Sentinel Base. He put his Wild Sentinels up front and his big boys in the back. Flame Trap took out his front line. Doom traded with one of the Mark IV’s, and then the remaining two tag-teamed the Destroyer. Turian was left with two Mark IV’s, and Justice sent his Doom to pasture.

Of course, that meant he had the 6-cost Doom ready to hit the table. This was after Turian had missed with Longshot and was forced to Reconstruction Program for Wild Sentinels and put four of them into play. The Wilds tried to tag-team the Robot Destroyer, but Acrobatic Dodge saved the day. The Destroyer took out a Mark IV, and Mystical Paralysis stopped the other.

Then came Sub-Mariner. Turian frantically Longshotted, then made a replacement and Longshotted again, hitting both times. He played a Wild Sentinel and a Mark IV, then got a second from an Underground Sentinel Base. Two Overloads put the game in Justice’s hands, and as time had been called, Turian extended the hand.

Anthony Justice defeats Mike Turian 2-0.
